Do I need different upper control arms?

I have a 2021 4Runner ORP. I am going to put on 285/70/17s with the Billstien 6112 Strut & Spring Assembled + Rear B8 5100 Shocks Set. Do I need to buy different upper control arms or will there be enough space for the OEM ones. I intend to lift the front 2.5in.

I'm running basically the same set up. I'm about 2" (clips 6 and 4) on my 6112's. I went with Old Man Emu UCA's. Greaseable and quiet. Very happy with them. Post up pics when you're done.

You probably don't NEED them but you'll benefit from having them.

I have basically the same setup (2" up front) with OEM UCAs. No issues, although I have yet to get it aligned since I installed them.

What are you referring to when you say "enough space"?

When is say enough space, I mean to function properly and not hit the tire. I painted the OEM rims black (did it myself and came out great!), so I will be using that rim with the original offset.

I don't think most of that is true.

Changes in caster can cause the wheel to lose clearance as it moves it closer to the front or tear of the fender.

Factory upper control arms are not the limiting factor for front end articulation.

So the ability to move/adjust the wheel a bit more fore or aft isn't helpful if you're rubbing/clearing bigger tires?

So potentially limiting a shock's down travel doesn't help with / isn't a function of articulation?

If the factory control arms aren't the limiting factor, then no.

I bet you have a guitar amp that goes to 11.

You may not know until it is all installed. Will ultimately determine if you have rubbing or alignment issues afterwards.

I went with replacing the upper control arms. This eliminated any tire scrubbing and the need to chop the body mount. I went with 3” in the front and 2” in the rear with 285/70/17 on TRD Pro wheels. It sits perfectly level.

If planning on changing them later down the road, might as well get uca and install everything at once, especially if you can find the uca you want on sale. I got uca for alignment purposes. I did notice my steering felt a little tighter after installing them, which is a plus for me

I agree with Vito. I have a pro. Added eibach springs over fox shocks with 285s. trimmed fenders back and no body chop. I do a lot of off road and no tire rub. I took off the fox uca and put on dobinsons adjustable UCA’s and it a made a world of difference. Not sure what your use is, but the ease of adjustment makes it easy.

Stock UCAs won’t limit articulation as long as the shocks installed are not long travel.

However, if you use huge tophat spacers to lift the front (instead of a shock/coil lift), you may possibly reach the angle limit of the stock UCA. Which is very bad. That’s the big reason top-hat spacers aren’t recommended if you off-road.

But any aftermarket coil/shock lift with standard range travel will have no problem with the stock UCAs, The shock is always what’s in charge of limiting down travel.

While a lot of people get aftermarket UCAs to allow for additional caster angle, it can be the cause of rubbing at the body mount (where there wouldn’t have been any with stock UCAs). That’s because to get that additional caster, aftermarket UCAs move the top of the tire backwards, closer to the body mount).

So if you can live with lower caster angles, stock UCAs is probably the best bet in terms of durability, quietness, and being maintenance free.
