Yes. Big difference. Most of those brush guards – the ones we're calling damage multipliers – attach under the bumper, wraparound up, in front of the grille. The mounts for those are primarily designed to simply hold them in place. A winch bumper – that can be a plate bumper or tube bumper – replaces the factory bumper. Having a bull bar or grille guard as part of that bumper absolutely protects the grill headlights, etc. if they're designed to do so.

All the steel/aluminum bumper mods that fram mount transfer impact directly to the frame. They basically bypass the crush capabilities of the Toyota engineered bumper. Personal choice but any bumper or brush guard or doodad changes the engineering protection design so the brush guard damage multipler concern appies to any front end mod. Just read the fine print the lawyers put in the warnings for aftermarket bumpers. Its all there. Doesn’t mean they dont have a purpose… but the brush guard is a BRUSH guard. Not impact protection.

I agree with @akakaiser that some vehicles look better with brush guards, my 4runner is supposed to arrive May 14th, so I need to spend some time around it to see.
But also, with a brush guard that didn't require modification...if I hated it, I could take it off.

And any damage from more than a bump in that parking lot and a scuff to the plastic bumper, Im going to call insurance anyway and they can fix the whole thing

Since you guys hate brush guards, I went a different direction...

I hit this at 55 mph. Dead center between the headlights. No time to hit the brakes. All it did was tweek the license plate frame. That bumper paid for itself that day. Yes, the deer went in the freezer.

imagine if this guy had a brush guard or stock front end vs this slimline bumper. Outcome would have been way different, enough said about going with a plate style bumper.

That deer on the tiny metal front bumper was a lucky (unlucky) coincidence. No bumper or brush guard will matter if it misses your very expensive tiny metal plate. Brush guards, winch bumpers, doodads, they aren’t designed for much except slow speed pushing branches out of the way or a place to mount a winch. To imply that they are protecting you from deer is naive. That pic is a data point way off the curve. WINCH bumper. BRUSH guard. Purpose is pretty clear. Deer protection is a totally different requirement. Look at semis/tractors with wildlife bumpers and you’ll see that the structure to actually deflect a deer and keep driving is more than you’ll ever get from a small suv. I think we all are victims to spending a ridiculous amount of money on accessories that have very very low use and are probably deep in the rationalization zone claiming that brush guards cause damage but winch bumpers protect you from deer. Maybe sometimes, with a little luck, but that’s about it.

but… that winch bumper looks great. I do have to admit

@akakaiser I think your points are valid… mostly. Once we move beyond the wraparound brushguard/garnish, to the bumpers that @Stoney Ranger and @TrailSpecial22 showed, we've moved into a category of legitimate protection. And yeah, a small bumper-mounted bull bar, might be a lucky shot against a deer, and maybe it won't protect the truck against a moose or even a mature buck, but it is legitimate protection. We can keep moving further into that category like the bumper on my Pickup (just a classic ARB with full bull bar; I'd post a picture, but if I do that one more time, @Borracho Loco says I have to sell him the truck). It offers more protection… maybe a slightly bigger deer, maybe it protects more of the truck. I think we're all striking a balance between some protection without going full Aussie.

full aussie is one cool rig. Spent a little time down there and for a minute wanted to move there just for the offroad opportunities… ARB sure makes some cool kit

Your bumper looks like it wouldn't block the radar cruise control sensor. Who manufactures it? Thank you. Bill

correct, no issues with the sensor. The bumper is from SSO. Southern state off-road.
