That’s the problem with that “up nort” sandy mud. It just doesn’t stick. Throw in a rainstorm on the way home and it’s like you didn’t even go anywhere.

That time a couple years ago, though, that mud bog solidified on my wheels and tires and I was so out of balance bouncing all the way to Green Bay until I could find a self-serve car wash to get that mess off!

It was only half ass dirty. It just looked like I was lazy.

I was half expecting to see you at Picnic Point on Saturday.

When we arrived, there was a younger couple set up by my favorite firepit. They ended up leaving. Apparently the forest service takes down the reservation signs at 2pm or so.

I told them they could stay, but I don't think they wanted to hang out with a bunch of Toyota nerds.

Nothing I'm aware of. There used to be an off-road park in northern Illinois, but I thought I heard they shut down.

The furthest south part of the Trans Wisconsin is way at the west side of the state, so it's actually not any closer than the Pipeline.

The Pipeline is in the Lakewood/Laona district of the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest. This area is loaded with old, poorly maintained logging roads. Even without touching the actual Pipeline, one could easily be entertained for a few days up there. There's also excellent camping and plenty of fishing up there.

If you decide to head up that way, make sure to get the MVUM map so you know which roads are open to which vehicles and when. Here's a link to free digital copies:

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/cnnf/maps-pubs

It's not a bad idea to download all of them so that you can explore in every district without getting into any trouble. Avenza Maps (app) allows you to view the maps with GPS active so you know exactly where you are. They're offline maps, so no worries about getting lost and needing reception.

Yes, there are some “trail rangers” out there who love nothing more than busting your nutz for driving in places they think you shouldn’t be.

Case in point, after we broke camp on the last TWAT trip, I detoured back north to the Park Falls district to explore a bit. On a trail marked for All Highway Vehicles, I rolled up on a guy hunting, who had just stopped on the trail and gotten off his ATV.

He looked kinda like he had a resting bitch face, so I rolled up to him and tried to chat with him all friendly-like, since we were going to pass within feet of each other anyway. Right away he goes into how I cant be there, I cant get through the trail with “that thing”, I dont belong there… I said I was surprised that I couldnt be there since I had the MVUM that showed the trail to be open to hwy vehicles, but he had none of that, and then said “I scared away his bird (as he stood 10 feet away from ATV he had just turned off). Whatevs, I didn’t want to make him cry . So I backed on out of there.

Well it turns out he probably saved me from a ton of pin striping, because when I looped around and found the exit end of the trail, it was super tight/overgrown. It looks like they hardly use those trails over there.

The vibe there was much different than Lakewood/Laona district. No side by sides, no sport ATV, no club signs on the roads, just that lonesome “work ATV” with the malcontent on it was all I saw.

What really showed the place was different, was that the gas station SOLD air!! The air compressor station had a credit card reader with a big old sign saying NO REFUNDS. Small detail, but the gas stations on lakewood laona have big ole air air compressors and tanks, and so far have not seen a place charging for it.

@Chris In Milwaukee The dealer was trying to get me into another MGM. I must have gotten five different vehicles that were MGM.

I had a similar, but also different experience near the Pipeline once. I went through a loop that was open to highway legal + atv/utv. It was very narrow and I got a few looks (just funny looks, not shitty ones) from the people I passed on ATV's and UTV's. I finally pulled over and stopped as one gentlemen was oncoming with a UTV. when he pulled up I said "I feel like I'm on the wrong trail." He said he didn't think trucks were allowed back there. I told him the map said I was ok, and he said he didn't realize that. I told him I probably wouldn't be going through there again, though.

No dirty look, no attitude. I'm sure there's a handful of D-bags up there. But, so far, my interactions with other types of off-road vehicles have been very positive. In addition, I've had some very pleasant conversations with folks in Jeeps and other highway legal 4×4's as well.

I had a guy come up on me near bro rock in a Ram, he was doing the same thing as us…just out for a stroll in the national forest, just lookin to chat with a fellow wheeler. No weirdness.

The attitude of the guy in park falls honestly surprised me…guess there’s one in every bunch though.
