Look back in this thread and check out the 6th gen speculation thread. About half of the post are people complaining about it.

I'll repeat what I keep saying.. We don't know for sure how reliable they will be. But, we do know that it's going to be a huge improvement in power.

You can thank the EPA for this trend. But if we get same/more power, and better fuel economy, i'll be happy.

More power is already known. Reliability is the only question.

Evidently, the specs for the 2.4 turbo haven't been repeated often enough, because every day or so someone seems worried that it won't have enough power. o_O

Also, based on some of the comments, it's going to be a real shocker if every engine doesn't grenade within 15 minutes of driving off the dealer lot.

For me capability and reliability are very closely ranked. I picked the 4Runner over the Wrangler, but just barely. If the 6th Gen isn’t as reliable as the 5th Gen I’ll slide into a Jeep in a heartbeat.

That’ll be good for about 9 more pages of pointless bickering.

I remember 1 week old Tundra with 300 or so miles at the dealership for Turbo waste gate issue. With the part delays the ownerwas talking about lemon law and he was also concerned about cab removal for the repair with the design of the turbo. I wonder if Tacoma needs similar cab out procedure for turbo repair. I think Toyota is taking time to test the Tacoma this time I guess..

Haha, it looks about half as bad as the Bronco’s plumbing.

I’m betting this motor is the one that makes it into the 4runner. Hopefully the turbo’s location is in better spot than in the tundra’s case. It would suck if the body needs to get lifted off to service the turbo or turbo-related-breakable-things.

I test drove a corolla before buying my 4runner. It was a MT with anti-stall and auto rev-matching. Yeah, it’s all computer controlled throttling, just like how throttle gets manipulated with traction control. It shifted all right, no intrusive computer throttle inputs. In fact, If you know how to drive a stick, you’d never notice, because it would never intervene.

The rev matching was neat, but a little gimmicky. I think you could turn that off in the corollo.

Nobody is talking about the sway bar disconnect! Somebody needs to figure out how we can retrofit it into our current 4runners!

But is the power gonna be where you need it. In the Tacoma it is not.

The 2.4 Turbo makes peak torque at 1700 RPMs. That's way better than anything the 4Runner has ever had, with the only exception being the V8.

Are you referring to the 2GR FKS?

Edit: this is just what I was talking about a few posts back. Nobody looks up the specs, and then they worry about how it's not going to have enough power.

Is the new Tacoma getting a sway bar disconnect? Or, are you referring to the one in the Jeep?

Maybe the next version of KDSS will be so good that everybody will want it.

Like previous guy said, reliability is untested. Will be interesting to see see how this plays out, esp in 8yrs or so, they have to redesign again to go completely EV.

For some reason, this reminded me of the vehicles with front wheel drive with V-6 engines horizontal mounted. Trying to replace the three spark plugs near the firewall with only about 2" of space to work.

I briefly owned a ‘78 Chevy Monza with a 5 liter V8. Changing the #8 spark plug involved unbolting the engine from the motor mounts and jacking it up. Needless to say that plug never got changed.

My other vehicle is Tesla and I agree. I have not had any issues with it, however when I close the door it feels like its very "light". It sounds like its gonna break. The feeling of something well made that you get from toyota is just isn't there. The build quality is way low compared to toyota.
I am a toyota fanboy so I may be biased. But I will wait till toyota has more than a single vehicle in the area, and tesla has opened up its network to everyone so charging isn't a concern anymore on non-tesla vehicles.

Plus there is something about the sound of ICE engine that makes me happy. No fast EV can bring me that.

Did anyone listen to the video of the new taco start up.

Being a V6 fan and against change I am truly trying to be unbiased.

When one crew started up the new Pro with the red interior I would have thought it was my 1985 Ford Tempo (first car).

The engine sounded awful and like some POS, lots of knocking. You have this beautiful looking truck super sharp and this loud ass engine that sound like a small diesel in POS van in a third world country.

Lol, have you ever listened to a 1GR?

    Which video was it in?

I am trying to find that video ugh. I watched too many last night.

Agreed our 4Rs are a bit loud at start up for sure but I guess it’s preference. But I think it sounds much better after 30 seconds or so. I’ll try to find that video again and post a link if I find. There is obviously a ton of new videos the last few days :)

Lol, I have to admit, weirdly, I love the big cooling fan sound. I think it’s because I was imprinted on big american body on frame cars as a child, but only drove imports as a teen. Heck, I’ve only ever bought mitsubishis toyotas or hondas.

Big ass belt driven fan with clutch attached with a big ass wooosh at startup is so 1990s Crown Victoria lol. Love it!

Has Toyota not run the turbo 4 cylinder in other models for years now, like some Lexus SUVs? How has reliability been there?
