Why does it hang so low

Portals are fine to daily :notsure: I have seen a few G500 4x4^2 models stuck in traffic in my daily commute. May not make sense economically, but driveability is fine.

On the Toyota platform, because of the reduction at the hubs, portals is the only solution that reduces stress on the front diff intermediate shaft. That is, if you keep the vehicle IFS.

Should've gone to the stronger Tundra rack, but whatever...

That's the rack that marlin paired with the RCLT. Tacomas have blown thru Tundra racks also, but the Tundra is much stronger. LC ram is hollow, Tundra is solid.

Bah! That’s not what I want to hear.

I’m sure the required upsizing on the tires is also a huge contributor to blowing racks. I thought I remembered both kits out there require 35” tires?

Isnt the service interval low? That kind of additional maintenance seems like a beating for daily. It's already a pain dropping my skids every oil change to grease the zerks.

The 35" tires and the portals would be heavy. Incidentally, the Sherpa Racing 4th gen has the RCLT without portals and an LC 200 rack that has held up just fine. Sidebar: those kids have done well in their class. First ever Vegas to Reno desert race they finished 3rd in class. Helluva an accomplishment.

What zerks require grease at every oil change? Or are you running 12 mo / 10k oil change intervals?

I do my driveshafts every 5k. Probably overkill but what I have always done.

I haven't seen any stand alone brackets, but with the sides being welded up, I'm sure this one is the strongest tank skid on the market. I wish it would've been in stock when I bought an RCI tank skid.

On my last 5th gen 4Runner I hit a recent size rock (had to drive over it as it was blocking the way on a narrow mountain road and no way to turn back) I dented the fuel tank skid and it did dent my fuel tank and changed the reading for my estimated fuel mileage from that day on

Triangulated 4-link is the ideal rear axle link arrangement, two upper links and two lower links. Side-to-side motion is controlled by the links arranged in triangles:

This is common in rock buggies but is hard to package in a production vehicle due to things like a fuel tank and cargo compartment getting in the way. Most SUVs compromise by arranging the links longitudinally and adding a panhard bar, which causes binding at higher articulation angles.

Haha, sorry, I meant about the gas tank. I was actually ASE certified in suspension (A4), so I understand the different configurations pretty well. I've only owned a few Jeeps, but they all had the gas tank in the rear, behind the axle.

ETA: I think I misunderstood your post. I thought you were saying that only dedicated crawlers/rock-buggies had the tank behind the axle, but most Jeeps (TJ, JL, JT, JK, XJ) do, as well as have four-link suspension. Although, a dedicated rock-buggy probably doesn't, as they will typically have a very small "fuel cell" located a little higher and forward slightly (in what would be the passenger compartment (if there was one) so the weight transfer/COG doesn't throw things off as much.

4runner sharing platforms and they are trying to satisfy to many different people. Should just have an SR5, LIMITED and PRO models with available options the way you want it. I had to remove all the car parts from my limited to be a normal 4wd again.

The images I posted above are from a 2011, maybe the gauge of metal is thinner now? Wouldn't surprise me. He didn't daily that truck so maybe he didn't care about fuel readings. He ended up building his own fuel tank skid and attached a lexan bottom to it for sliding on the rocks. I recently put an FJ tank in my 4th gen and whats crazy is they came stock with a plastic skid. I won't ever take it in the rocks though.

That RCLT kit (if you want to keep the ifs) is soooo awesome, and if i had unlimited funds would do on a 4runner/taco rig. So well thought out, and damn near bullet proof. For me, i carry spare tie rod ends. If im froading or not. Ive only had to swap em twice in my adventures. Shits so weak. Going to mcdonalds and wallmart, the rig is fine, do anything evey remotely silly, and you can watch the rack/rod ends bend. Most dont even know or notice. And for the 1% that actually beat on their rig, .... carry spare rod ends. If you dont really froad (offroad) then dont worry about it, and go get your coffee in the morning and be happy. Hell, 99.999% on here, dont even use 4wd, let alone the locker, nor care, and thats fine. (Toyota reliability)

    Yeah I've seen that video.
I believe at the end of that video he says they likely don't hurt anything and do provide marginally better CV angles. He also recommended to just stay under 2" of lift height.
So for the people that don't listen to that lift height recommendation I think a diff drop is a good idea.
(Provided you have compatible skids and don't lose your ground clearance advantage)

When I contacted Dobinsons they recommended the diff drop if I went with their long travel front shocks. So I installed it.
It did help with the CV angles on my rig quite a bit.

Since I already had the RCI skids everything works together nicely.
