It’s the best diagram I could find, I have a manual but it says ‘79-‘94, the year before my 4runner:/ most of the stuff in this manual are spot on but there are a few differences. I’ll attach some pics of the wiring diagram.
As for the distributor cap, there is only one way to put it on, there is only about a half inch each way that it can go, I have it in the middle.

There they are- mt and at start switches... inline with the starter coil. What do you have?
You can also see three connections of the ignition switch. You need to test those with a multi meter set to VDC you should have 12 on all three with the switch in the first position.
    ACC,IG1 & ST1.
They are all fed from fuse a 40amp/AM1 on a white wire.
You should measure from ground (any bare metal) to the switch output.
That verifies the switch...but the starter still will not engage if the clutch/ neutral switch is not made.

You can also ohm out the starter relay coil to verify its not failed...
It does look as though the ECU wants to see the signal from the clutch or neutral switch and there is an odd dotted line at the crank sensor circuit to the ECU, included in the clutch switch circuit .... does that have any crossover to your knock sensor issue?

I have the starter figured out, I hard wired a switch and the starter works fine. Now it won’t start. I’m about to take it all apart and return the parts to rock auto and sell the truck with a non op engine. Any suggestions?

It won’t start without fuel... you mentioned the fuel pump didn’t runt with ignition: the interlock of the clutch or the neutral switch is where you’re at- that switch is located on the pedal for manual and at the shifter for auto
    Have you looked at that?
You haven’t said which you have either...

By passing everything with the switch direct to starter didn't fix the problem man.

If you look at the wiring diagram you should make sure you are getting output from the ignition switch.

I’ll definitely try and check it out after work today. I was thinking that since I have good spark that the ignition system was working.
Now, When I turn the key to the on position there is an odd fan / fluttering sound coming from Where I circled in the picture. It’s a new sound and different than anything I’ve heard in a car.

I feel defeated:/ I switched the knock sensor wires around because I wasn’t sure if they were hooked up wrong or not. I have a new multimeter And diagrams but have had zero luck Applying it to the truck, I’ve always stayed away from electrical and do not have much experience with it at all. The truck has 250k and the transmissioN was slipping A little before I started this. Feel like posting it on Craigslist for $850 With all the new parts or $500 and I’ll return the new parts. I want to search for An inline 4 diesel 2nd gen 4runner Down the road and building that up for wheeling. I’ve been frustrated with this truck since day one and really wanted to get it running better but I feel like I’m at the end of the road with this project. I have other stuff I need to work on and this is just in the way now. Any last suggestions guys? Thanks again for the help!

The item you have circled in the picture is the ABS actuator. I don’t have the 4 wheel ABS system so I can’t tell you what a normal sound is.

If you reference FSM and the Starting System section it has a Description of the system, simple wire diagrams and troubleshooting procedures. The Wiring section has detailed wire diagrams, wire colors, pin locations in the connectors and component locations. If you focus on one wire at a time in the circuit for troubleshooting, it is not so intimidating. Don’t give up, it is probably something simple. Good luck!

I was having the same issues with mine. Turned out the injectors were clogged up.
