When to Regear??

Nice. I was comparing specs the other day and their weight surprised me. Truth be told that’s why I started this thread. Curious about people’s opinions after I realized my 33” ridge grappler weighs as much as a 34” at3.

Considered making the switch.

If you’re curious about some of the work it take to make a rig reliable and drivable on 37’s the owner of Sandy Cats has a YouTube channel and posts a lot of stuff on his 4Runner.

It’s very heavily modified but it’s a beast for sure. I believe it’s regeared to 4.88 to run 37s. Dana 60 rear end.

Dana 60 is not needed for 37s, Dana 60 is for 40 and above

I think it really depends on your use case. If you’re gonna cruise around town all day, sure. Maybe even do some light trails. Sure. But this thing is a hard core rock crawler that can bomb through the desert at 65-70 mph and be fine.

This. I think the only way to go that crazy on a 4Runner is if you have a near endless supply of money and want to be different, or you have a shop or channel that you are using it to promote. Otherwise it's just not the right tool for the job.

It would not make sense to me to spend all the time and money on that and have it be a constant project when I can go down to the Jeep dealer, and for the same approximate money as a TRD Pro, get a Rubicon JL or JT that with ~2K in suspension mods can run a 38" tire more reliably AND effectively. (If you shop right, you can even get a Rubicon gladiator right now for 4R SR5 money)

I think if you need that size tire, the 4Runner is just not the right vehicle for what you're trying to do. For milder off-roading and overlanding stuff, I think it's a terrific platform, and I think a 33 to 34 inch tire should be plenty.

And don't forget about the 80 series, you can run a 37-in tire on those fairly easily, and they're very capable. IMO the 80 series is the GOAT, it's the best Toyota 4x4 that was/will be ever offered in the US.

If I WERE going to go crazy and do all those mods to a IFS Toyota anyway, it would not be a 4Runner. I'd do a 200 series Land Cruiser, to at least get a good engine and nice interior.

I ran 37s on my JK Dana 44s when I lived in CA. Did rock crawling including the Rubicon trail. Sold my JK after it had 120k miles, no issues whatsoever.
You don't need Dana 60 for 37s, and you don't freaking need 37s to "bomb through the desert"
