When to Regear??

    RSG sliders, Yakima offgrid basket, Pro-Comp wheels, SOS Streamline bumper and skids, Warn VR EVO10S winch + Ultimate Sidewinder, Bilstein 6112 + 5100 + rear lift coils, Rigid Dually SS ditch lights w/Caliraised brackets and OEM style dash switch
    34's are more than what's necessary for the vast majority of us. Also, anything over 33" starts to require modifications that most people probably don't want to do.

    If you want to overload your drivetrain, that's your choice. But, it's not good advice.

    Edit: aside from putting extra strain on the engine and transmission, you're also adding wear to bearings, CV axles, and steering components. This is hardly ever worth it for mild to moderate off-road use.

    Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

    One concern remains. I'd like to retain the ability to comfortably cruise at higher speeds because I do cross country road trips with the wife. Very long deserted highways means I cruise at 80-90 for hours. Will moving to 34s and regearing no longer allow this? What is a comfortable cruising speed with your setup?

    If you have the money and want to do it right. Going over 285 7017 you WILL benefit from 4.56 or 4.88.

    Some may say its not needed. But driving an absolute turd that does 0-60 in 15-30 seconds is no fun.

    4runners come 3.73 with 31s. Id try and keep that ratio.

    This is one of the tire size and gear ratio calculators I've used. I'm thinking that sticking with 4.56 would be the safer bet for 34s.
    Sounds like a regear to 4.56 is better in just about every way. Except for the wallet lol

    This is the first thread I've ever came across with people suggesting against a regear, but 34's are fine at freeway speeds if you live in a flat geographical region.

    I ordered both a SC and gears once the drivability became an issue for long trips, and mostly to make it easier for my significant other to drive it. I've never felt I needed either for off-road, at least for how much $ it all cost.

    Another argument here is 33's are much easier to find in a pinch than 34 or 35's in your specific tire

    Regear is a topic right now too on my BC 5th Gen 4Runners Facebook members group. Surprising amou t of people,.many more than here, currently running 35's. Or some 34's. Little have regeared. Some have tuned, some have crawlbox mods. All this feedback great for perspective. Regear cost may never be in my budget so

    I do like how the truck performs now w/ 33s. It can be a little sluggish at elevation or going up big hills, but its very livable and cruises nice, even loaded up.

    I've pretty well been convinced to stick with my 33s for the time being. I'll continue working on storage mods and improving organization.
    Less building, more exploring, more camping. The truck is pretty damn capable at this point. Maybe bigger is not always better.

    If I move to 34s it will be alongside a regear. Thanks for showing me the light guys!

    70 mph/2200 rpm. Running 4:56 with 33" AT's. Can buck a little higher on mph when needed, honestly don't think 33" AT's are built for speed. Note - I've gotten a

    awesome balance job since purchasing these Yokohamas. Neither suspension/ front end or tire vibration comes into play @ 80 mph. Haven't bucked 90 mph yet.

    Almost 20k on these skins. Hope this helps OP

    This chart may help and they note the RPM will be higher with an automatic transmission. Be sure to multiply the RPM in the chart by .72 as that's our 5th gear ratio.

    Way better transmission gearing is well. I was curious the other day, I looked up the crawl ratio of the Mojave, which has the 410 axles and 2.72 transfer case, and it was 57 :1. 4Runner and Tacoma are like 35:1.

    I just watched a Gladiator video last night, the owner had installed a 3-in lift and 38-in tires. No rubbing. Amazing how easy it is to fit big tires on a Jeep. He said the stock gearing was adequate, though it would often shift out of 8th gear at highway speeds.

    Good call. I had been reading through this thread earlier, but hadn't had a chance to comment.

    I I've watched a number of Toyota videos where the owner had regeared, and they all said the same thing: since they had added larger tires and more weight incrementally, they didn't realize how bad performance had gotten until they did the gear swap, and they all said they wish they had done it sooner.

    Jeep is engineered to be modified, Toyota is engineered not to be modified.
    But I'm confident with 34s, things are not worse for me than it is for that Gladiator. The guy will fall off the 8th gear to 5th or 6th if he farts

    That's overwhelmingly what I hear from people as well. That's been my experience as well and will likely be regearing next summer. I'm not overloaded with gear and I've got a blower to help but I also know it will be a noticeable difference. For some reason this thread is running counter to everything else I've seen. I'm not knocking anyone, just seems a bit unusual.
