    It is a slug; but I drive like a slug. The engine isn't stressed it just dribbles its power into a proven bullet-proof transmission and always gets me and my stuff from here to there with a minimum of strain. Like a Timex it will take a licking and keep on ticking. That's what I want in a truck. I don't race anybody.

    That slug can cruise along nicely on the highway at 85 mph at a pretty low rpm. I can wait to see how the turbo 4 does at those speeds and how much its mpg plummets.

    Since the turbo 4 makes way more low end torque than the 4.0, it probably won't have to downshift at the slightest hint of a headwind or incline. I suspect it will do just fine.

    Toyota Should have just sucked it up and slapped a ZF 8 speed in there and kept making the 5th gen, lol. All this expense and now they have Tacos overflowing.

    Owned Many Toyotas - Past
    I have had 9 Toyota trucks (2000 & 2007 Tundra) and 7 smaller trucks from 1970's Hi-Lux to Tacomas (many other Toyotas too). Also helped friends to negotiate several more Toyota trucks, love Toyota trucks. The problem we have here in the southeast is the insane amount of SET port add on's and then dealer add on's. :spending: I know Toyota Corp. is not happy with that, but little they can do.


    I looked at some of my older purchases in this SET area and the add on's were very few, if any, but today, it is possible to have over 20% of SET regional and dealer add on's. :mad:

    I have been going out of the SET area to buy vehicles now.

    As far as the Tacoma quality, it has gone down in Mexico IMO. I still like the "J Cars" over the US made vehicles too.

    I bought a 2024 4Runner to keep, because I do NOT want a 4 cylinder turbo that you have to squeeze the guts out of to get power.

    The 4.0 is slow but bullet proof and I would like an 8 speed transmission, but the 5 speed will do.

    Toyota did a good move when they .. super stalled the move to EV's ... even with pressure from DC.

    I had 2 different Hi-Lux Toyotas in the 1970's and I really miss those little white, stripped down, simple, single bed wall trucks ... lol

    Oh, I live part time in US and part time in Asia and the Toyota Hi-Lux in Thailand is still a very well built truck.

    Toyota and Honda dealers in Thailand are gigantic in size. Small city of Chiang Rai had a Toyota dealer with 23 Hi-Lux and 2 sedans on the floor.

    PS ... It will be interesting to see what Toyota does with Mexico when pressure increases to build in US.

    You mean people who were never going to buy one new from a dealership in the first place?

    The people who don't buy 4Runners will always have a reason to not buy one. It's too old...It's not a prius in gas mpg....OMG it is so tipsy in corners...Less room than a highlander...it doesn't have a 20 inch tablet where every function is buried three menus deep...there is no end.

    I have a Mexican made Tacoma that’s build quality has been excellent. It does piss me off though that Toyota is using cheap labor but still charging higher prices than US made trucks.

    For the most part legacy domestic automakers' Mexican operation make as good if not better cars than their US counterparts. Cars like the Fusion, Fieta(minus the DCT) etc are much better made than Ford's domestic sedans like the late Taurus.

    Toyota, Honda and Mazda have always been good with their US plants so the quality is not much different.

    I don't fault Toyota for charging what the market can tolerate. Still, sucks for the value minded buyers.

    It’s corporate greed. Most industries go to foreign made products so they can keep costs down compared to similar US made products.

    Wouldn’t you do the same? Is your cellphone or computer manufactured in the USA? That’s global capitalism. Perhaps they relocated production to be closer to raw materials or to take advantage of more lenient business and tax regulations.

    Because torque is what gets a vehicle moving, and keeps a vehicle moving. It does not matter how many cylinders are generating it, the important thing is where in the RPM range it occurs.

    This is why people like diesel so much, they generate more torque than the equivalent gas motor, and at a lower RPM. That's why they are so good at towing.

    I have watched a lot of reviews of the new Tacoma with the 2.4 turbo, and not one of them said they preferred the old V6. They all remarked that the engine felt stronger, and required less downshifting on grades.

    There’s nothing unethical about shifting production to a more cost-effective location. Ever wonder why a Toyota Camry rolls out of Kentucky or Mercedes-Benz sets up shop in Alabama instead of New York or New Jersey? Yeah, it’s called logic. Feel free to give it a try.

    Interestingly GM's Arlington, TX truck plant and Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant outside of Louisville are both UAW plants but each is regarded as the best plant for each company in the US.

    It's not just cost since the same costs of union work force still applies as any other US plant, it also has to do with the work force quality.

    WTF are you talking about bud? Not taking advantage of poor people and countries to make max profit for the CEOs has nothing to do with shutting down the business. They’ll survive just fine with a bit less money.

    Most car companies' profit margin is in the low single digits percentage wise. The cost of keeping up with government regulations and future mandates has taken a huge toll on the volume makers.

    The 3.5 V6 and its shifting problems isn’t too hard to beat. We’ll see how the 2.4 compares to the 4.0 in the 4Runner.
    Also comparing this little 2.4 to a diesel for towing is comical. Let’s compare it to a 5.9 Cummins. :D

    Let’s look at the price of a couple similar midsize trucks. The Frontier Pro4X is made in the US (I think Mississippi) and costs $45K. A Tacoma TRD Off-road premium which is pretty good match is $60K and made it Mexico by cheaper labor, land, construction, etc. Seems like there’s plenty of extra money being made there.

    It's not a shifting problem. It's a torque problem.

    It will be better.

    Why would we compare a small displacement engine in a light duty, midsize SUV to a large diesel engine in a heavy duty full size truck?

    Let's compare it to something relevant, like the 1GR or the 2GR-FKS. Performance-wise, it beats both of them.

    You guys keep bringing up torque, towing and diesels. Anyone who actually wants to tow is buying a real truck. Have you ever driven a diesel ram or even just a hemi ram? There’s absolutely no comparison to any of these Toyota engines. Let’s stop pretending.

    And, yes, I've driven a diesel Ram. So what? How is that at all relevant to the 4Runner?

    Also, you're incorrect in stating that anyone who wants to tow is buying a "real truck." You don't need a diesel, or even a full size, for light to medium towing. Why would someone buy a huge ass truck if they don't need it?

    It just so happens Nissan is not doing well at all with their financial situation. They are forced to use low price PLUS generous incentives to lure customers away from Tacos, Rangers, and Canyorados.
