I went up there today, I couldn’t make it the day you went. It was pretty nice after the rains and all, iced over ponds in the middle of the trail, mud, did I mention how i hate mud.

Very cool, the trail seems to have gotten a little tougher (not hard) but fun. I like mud just not the clean up lol

Good evening all, I’m thinking of heading up to The Holcomb Valley Trail tomorrow morning Anyone know if it’s open or if chains are required? Thanks!

Too bad I'm not around but this might be a good meetup to have fun with the AWD folks. Love to see your 4Runners on YouTube.. :)

    Feel free to ask
Any info on SoCal meets or trail runs coming up? Recently tried the Facebook thing again joining a local 4Runners group and was quickly reminded why I got off it years ago. A bunch of ‘my dick is bigger than yours’ pissing matches.

The seasonal closure ended for many local national forest fire road on May 1st. Those lock gates are now opened. Mount Pacifico today, only 2 wheel drive but very nice.

The heat is currently "going on in SoCal". But if you can get to higher elevation it is 20-25 degrees cooler. Just camped in Holcomb Valley, Big Bear for four nights to escape. So nice!

I am new to the forum and live in the South Bay area just south of LAX. I am going up to Lake Arrowhead at the end of the month. Anyone have recommendations for areas/trails to check out around either Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear?

Welcome! I’m also in South LA (Willowbrook). 3n16 and 3n14 are the trails you’re looking for. Look up trails near fawnskin, and Holcomb creek. Unless your rig is built like a rock crawler I’d stay away from John Bull (trail). I’m pretty sure I have some saved offline Gaia maps (gpx files I believe) that should be easy to follow. There’s so many trails up in the big bear area. Let me know if youre ever down for a day trip. Looking at heading out to Gorman /Hungry Valley OHV soon too.

the pilot rock truck trail is accesible from arrowhead. There's a bunch of trails if you look on maps. Pilot rock is not strictly on road vehicles though. there were a lot of side by sides when i was there. It's neat because you can bypass the hard stuff if you want.

I didn't do the whole thing because of time so I'm not sure how it is as you get closer to silverwood lake.

    https://goo.gl/maps/9VfCWJ3kXBiNNPoJA

I started the trail there and drove into the main trail. It's nice up there, nothing too hard.

There’s a fair amount of trails you can get to in about 45 mins…otay mountain truck trail, corral canyon, black mountain truck trail, Palomar mountain, Fred canyon, bear valley, black canyon are a few I can think of off the top of my head

Palomar seems to be the closest to me, would you recommend Nate Harrison Grade or Palomar Divide Road? Any others that are less fire-roady?

I'd seen a post somewhere on FB where someone hosted a toyota swap meet or something of that nature. An event where everyone is welcomes to come, bring their used unwanted parts and try to sell or give to those who needs. Sort of like a cars and coffee and swap meet all in one you could say. Would be a great idea if someone's willing to organize it in So Ca. somewhere.
