What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

The black letters for the TRD skid plate arrived today. The skid plate is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Letters were shipped via USPS and the skid plate via FedEx. Not sure why. Anyway, should have it on by the weekend.

 

Two exciting changes this week right before a big road trip: trimmed the rocker panels to install OEM rock rails(not sliders) and it was finally the right time for me to cover up some of my chrome (roof rails, front bars, rear liftgate panel, & rocker panel). I'm very happy with how it all came out.

 

I’m not a fan of chrome, so have been on quest to change it on the interior now. Got the handles, climate control knobs, and radio knobs in black from AJT. Easy install, and looks so much better. BUT, they really feel cheap compared to OEM, especially on the climate control knobs (regretful buy for me I think). Radio knobs I hardly touch, so not an issue there … and door handle I’ll probably forget over time. But the climate control OEMs have a bit of rubber on them that makes it extremely noticeable.

 

Can you link the door handle you used? Looks good.

 

I want to do all of this , any idea where else besides AJT, I can get all this that may be better quality?

Same here..I'd love to get rid of the chrome. Hate how it shows finger prints.

Got it. Thank I just bought a set....Hated the chrome since day one.

 

Nothing directly against AJT as a company, just the feel of the plastic that replaces the knobs and the covers for the door handles just drops the way the quality feels. Hard to describe, but similar to how you’d know something is a knockoff for a name brand watch, you know the instant you pick up, no one has to tell you there is a difference. Like picking up a DSLR vs a toy camera. Cadillac vs Chevy cavalier base model.

My wife hates the feel of the passenger door handle and the climate control knob. Again not a direct knock on AJT, as they are selling colour change kits and do not hint at equivalent level of quality in feel.

 

Do the door handle covers just snap on or is there adhesive too?

A google search answered my question about adhesive...

Can you see any chrome peeking through with the cover installed? Like from the driver seat? I think that would bother me more than just leaving them chrome.

 

I have these and they are great! They just sort of slide over then snap into place, no sign of chrome at all and no adhesive or double sided tape.

Which Thule model did you get? Been thinking of upgrading from my Thule Sidekick to something that will open from both sides

 

I bought the Force XT Large box & Thule Evo raised rails. I had some old bars to make sure I didn’t rub my roof & they fit the Evo rails. I got them from Jackson at Rack Attack (Evans) in Denver. Great place for help with this stuff.

Turned 20,000 miles on my 2019 SR5 yesterday. At this rate it will outlast me for sure!

 

Did some reading and saw first hand that the clearcoat on the headlights and tail lights SUCKS. Maybe it's the design that has the flat top of both exposed to UV's, but not wanting to sand down and 2k clear them quite yet. Figured I'd buy some time trying to keep it from chipping/peeling some more with headlight vinyl:

 

Today, not much! Gluing down my Sun altimeter on the dash and storing a new tug strap and shackles. Will be gluing down/installing the Garmin 65 in She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed's" RAV4.

 

Which one did you get? A few years ago I replaced my digital handheld with a Sun and I really like it, especially the barometric pressure scale that's independent of calibration. It saves GPS battery on the trail and it's been pretty accurate in big, fast ups and downs, such as in the Grand Canyon.

I have a heart condition and COPD, so I watch the altitude. We were at Lava Beds NM last weekend and took a back trail out & stopped for a bathroom break and I was REALLY out of breath. Saw we were ~7500 feet. Only issue is using the Velcro for attaching it and the hinge keeps sliding closed from the bouncing when off road. I Super Glued the hinge and I'm trying 3M double sided tape and will see how that works!

Got mine from eBay in 3 days.

 

Replaced the wiper blades with the OEM inserts I got - no more streaking and smearing!

Also received my hitch mounted spare tire carrier from SSO today. They surprised me and gave me the shortened receiver I begged for - can't wait till the end of the month when I'm taking some time off to get all the stuff sitting in the garage installed!

 

Dissapointed that they do not have option for rhose that have 3rd row seating.

 

Are your midrow seats different? I would think they would work just fine. I didn't buy the floor liner for the back, because I have the factory liner that I'm happy with

 

Yeah it was different as per vendor it is does not fit a 5th grn limited.
