What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Nice, I got them recovery points to do as well, in my garage. Mine accomodate KDSS, and require frame drilling. Please report back and update us

 

Very excited to finally have my hood scoop vinyl from ToYodaVinyl on Etsy. Nice simple instructions and easy install took about 15 minutes.

 

Currently working at night time and living in the 4Runner during the day in the Arizona desert, thus added this temporary AC 6k BTU unit until able to come up with something permanent. Not too bad for the first hour in the garage, while at home, dropping 10F inside within 1 hour using ~4.2amp/hr draw off a 400ah battery bank through a 3k-watt inverter. On this first attempt, I forgot to turn on two 12v fans inside the living space, which helps circulate the air and cool the inside quicker. Rather than making it too complicated, simply set the AC on the floor, covering the gap with a shower curtain (for now), and leaving a gap at the hatch for the unit to vent outside, as this is temporary for another 2-3 months. While I considered passing the AC through the hatch window, doing so requires extra steps to get it through the window for use and down to this stow position when NOT in use. Not to mention, leaving it on the floor is stealthier than through the window. Thus opted to leave it on the floor. When I return to the desert, I intend to do a trial with the bed extended to find the efficiency of the unit passing the cold air to the sleeping area via ducts I still have to make. Tomorrow hoping to add an external inlet to add 300w portable solar to the already permanent 200w panel on the roof; the 500w total ought to be sufficient solar input (~20ah) to run the AC during the day without drawing from the battery. Down the calendar, looking to add a permanent 12v Cruising Comfort AC unit before July when the desert gets really hot during the day. Still working out the details as to where to install the Cruising Comfort without much change to the build thus far.

 

Holy cow that is brutal out in the desert with a portable AC? I could not do that wow kudos to you man.

 

I can’t speak for kdss but mine required no drilling. Very simple install and they both look and work great

Yes that’s what I was saying. Non kdss frame doesn’t require drilling to install these and it’s easy.

 

Do they really not have the same frames with a few extra drilled/tapped or drilled/insert or drilled/flodrilled holes?

 

I’m not entirely sure what the difference is but several aftermarket parts have an option to select for either kdss or non-kdss before making a purchase. So there’s gotta be something different (I’m guessing kdss is in the way so they have to figure out how to mount around it)

Installed RSG flat top sliders with grip plate in DOM powder coated logo.

Could not believe the weight difference taking off the Predator steps feeling the 2 side by side.

 

This morning I put a tempered glass screen protector on the infotainment screen. It's got one little spot that isn't perfect and resists rubbing out. Maybe it'll go away, but it's very minor - only visible when the screen is off.

Edit: the spot easily rubbed out after sitting for four hours. It's perfect now and the glass touchscreen is much nicer to use than the OEM.

 

I assume the Predators are lighter. Is that right? How much of a difference is it?

 

The RSG are about 50 lbs each. Predators are 14.5 not sure if that's each. Not apples to apples comparing aluminum to steel. Weight savings and where to go steel or aluminum is a constant struggle.

 

Imagine dropping predator steps on your foot vs RSG sliders.
I have HREW version not DOM. So I bet yours are little heavy and way stronger than mine.
I did apply a coat of Rust-Oleum on to the frame before fixing the sliders (can share the video if needed).

 

You really notice the weight difference when under the truck supporting them before getting the first few bolts in. I hated the Predators every time I was crawling under it and the steps getting in my way. Easy slide under now not needing to jack it up.

 

Mod is addictive. You guys are making me do stuff.

I have the same Sliders and I have their steel front and rear skid plates too. Can't say enough nice things about RSG's work and the folks at the shop are super friendly!

 

I really am impressed with the RSG sliders. I have RCI aluminum engine, transmission, transfer case, cat converter and steel rear differential skid plates.

I still question myself if weight savings on skids going with aluminum was right choice. Also why I went DOM on sliders letting them be strongest and try to let them take the impacts.

 

I started half a day early and I'm about half done. I got all the bolts out without removing the air dam and skid plate, and with some effort I could complete installation with them still on. However, there isn't enough clearance over the edge of the skid plate to use a torque wrench on the sway bar bushing mounts, and I'd feel better knowing that I torqued it right, so I'm going to drop the skid plate. I hope I can do it with jacking up the front end, but I'll do that if I have to. I did have to grind off some minor excess weld blobs, so I'll hit those spots with paint and get back to it in the morning.

Phase 2 is complete. I painted the bare spots left by the ground-off weld blobs and removed the air dam and skid plate. I should have done that to begin with; it was no trouble at all and would have expedited unbolting the sway bars. The most time-consuming part of this job thus far was the painting (2x primer and 2x finish coat), and I expect the reassembly won't contend for that honor.

The final phase will be tomorrow morning. As someone suggested, I'll use a jack to support the sway bar when I reattach it. The skid plate is heavy and unwieldy working on the ground, so getting its tabs in the slots without scratching it up will be the next hardest part.

I'm glad I did this right off the lot. Everything is squeaky clean and not fighting back.

 

So THAT'S why they call em sliders...
