Hi lift jacks are not safe. I said that in the beginning. Jacking a vehicle is not safe. But the way he is using the jack is about the safest way he could given he is taking the wheel off. Using your method, how would he get the wheel off?

For those with lifted vehicles and larger tires, the standard bottle jack is not tall enough.

    None yet!
I have a Tacoma on 35’s, lifted 4” in the rear. The bottle Jack is plenty tall enough for the axle. Again like I said, I use the bottle Jack as a Jack stand.

I have also used the hi lift just like he is, and then I throw the bottle Jack under the axle for safety. Not that complicated, I’m comfortable using my hi lift for anything .

Side of the garage jumped out and bit my passenger side mirror. Now I have to hunt for a used one because I refuse to buy new if I don’t have to.

Please excuse my poor knowledge. If OP wants can use the stock jack without any wood or anything right? (Yes OP used hi-lift jack and I have no problem with it as I don't feel scared doing that). Rear axle is the jack point and stock jack is tall enough correct? Again sorry about my poor knowledge and I'm trying to under stand why everyone looking for aftermarket bottlejack vs I don't need anything else with my lift + 285/70R17 tires.

Kmeeg, you can use Hi-Lift jack like that but on rocks or soft soil you are risking door damage if jack slips. If I may, tip: open the door in the spot where you placing the jack, if it falls - damage will be limited if any to interior trim and a hell a lot less costly than the door.

Have you thought about upgrading? Or if the damage is just the cover, you may be able to get just the cover.

Unfortunately it’s not. The cover is fine, puddle lights and turn signal are fine. It’s the housing that broke. The mirror is also fine. It’s 100% livable but still, I don’t like broke stuff on my 4R.

stock bottle jack is tall enough without blocks to lift front and rear. The rear is enough to lift any conceivably sized tire if you jack at the axle. I couldnt tell if the wheel had actually fallen off, leaving the rear axle too low to put the jack under. I thought maybe that was the reason the hi-lift was used.

This sucks! However, I can understand. When servicing the same area multiple times, by various people, the potential for mistakes go up. Been there done that lol. I remember driving an early 80s buick. Kept hearing this clicking, figured it was a hubcap. Then the sound hammering. Moments later, the front wheel departed the vehicle, the car rolled over it half way down the vehicle, and the car crashed down hard lol. Front wheel rolling around in circles like a cartoon. In my case, I had to find someone that had a highlift, to lift it at the front bumper and get the wheel back on lol

I didnt realize mine extended twice as far as I thought it did. It just kept cranking. This is the space w my 265s (without a block).

Dang crazy story! They built cars good back then. You could pickup your car off a factory bumper, rollover a tire, and still keep going.

In regards to the factory jack don’t try it with aftermarket suspension and bigger tires it doesn’t work (in that spot). I had mine fully extended and on a few blocks. Darn car would not lift off the ground. I will have to try today and take a picture. I am running 285/75/17 (34”) and I had a few inches of lift but I think that is back to normal with the weight I added.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
Yesterday a screen (large one) fell out of a second floor window and it hit the rear, passenger side window just right and shattered it. FML. I taped it up for now because it's gonna be a rainy day here. It's always something!

You waxed it to get rid of the bug splatter? :annoyed:

you should wash it, claybar, then wash again if necessary, then get any rough spots again with claybar, then wax. I would never recommend using wax to clean. It is meant to protect.

Yes sir, cars were tanks back then, i miss steel bumpers lol.

Regarding the bottle jack, the amount of lift shouldnt matter, unless you have suspension that increases total down travel. So Im kind of surprised a block and the factory bottle jack couldnt get your tire up. Maybe your shocks gave you some more down travel?

Okay so to be clear this was for the rear measurement (not the front and since I just put everything away I am not going back out to re-test). I am not saying using the stock jack on the axle won’t work as that is where I use it.

    Here are my findings:
With the jack all the way down there is roughly 9 inches to the frame.
    8502B1D8-9E18-4633-90BD-F8F0D48529AB.jpg
(Sons hand in the picture. Mine are a bit more hairy. ;))

Then after what felt like 1000 rotations I finished up the first section of the bottle jack and there was 3.5 inches remaining.

    1646E132-E3B0-4102-BBEF-04794BCFEB33.jpg

This tells me that roughly the bottle jack has a 5.5” neck (11 inches in total with both necks fully extended) so no I don’t believe my vehicle will lift the front at that location. As you will see in the pictures I am fully armored so I have other places to jack up beyond factory that are lower. I estimate this would not pickup the front on my vehicle (using the frame) as I have roughly 1.5” extra on the bottom with bigger tires and I have a bit more down travel suspension (but not much).

Anyways back to pics and the tire is not even close. But how much further???
    1A603B60-50E7-4788-B812-77B81D720D7C.jpg

I got my other bottle jack out to pick it up higher.
    042129FE-C5C8-4944-8CBE-BE3862F32383.jpg

You can see based off the picture I am barely clear:
    AFE8510F-EEC5-4CA3-898F-D12AE0ACCB75.jpg

But surprisingly the front was lifted up and more than the rear (this is why solid axles are better off-road for sure):
    BD46FC62-5F70-4C63-A0EC-1A351565ADF4.jpg

for the final photo let’s see how it looks:

Great posts, GrantA and McSpaz! I love when people actually get stuff out and test it, figure out the truth, and then take pics. I almost took my bottle jack out just last week, but I'm def keeping it now.

And one of the reasons I got a hilift is because one time when I really needed my bottle jack, I found one of the seals had blown, so it would only rise 4 inches. Had to ask a Jeeper for help.

Yeah about a month ago, I had a random rock crack my sunroof while visiting a friend in Arkansas (I live in Mississippi). Cost me about $800 for a new sunroof. Still feeling that right now.

Your going to like them. They are nice wheels. I bought the steel plate to protect my wheels and they surely have. However, when it rains or I wash the 4Runner water has no way out and just puddles. That is my only gripe and I wish they put little fin type things in the lip of the wheel to help eject water when driving because driving doesn’t help (unless driving a long distance that might help).
