What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

OEM LED headlight upgrade.

I initially tried to see if I could get away without removing the whole bumper. While I could get to that bolt on the side, I still couldn't get enough flex to get the light out.




A few more bolts, and I had the whole bumper off anyway. It's really not as difficult as it looks.



Didn't take that long for my first time doing it. Maybe 90 minutes taking my time.

 

Got me some X-Act Contour Husky Liners for the front and rear seats.

 

Rolled over 10k, changed the oil and the air filter. I didn't realize the oem air filter has a fiber pre filter on it. Swapped it out for an AEM Dry flow intake.

 

I have the same filter on the way. Should have it tomorrow. Seems to have good filtration while still providing good airflow for a decent price. It seems the quilt attached to the OEM filter makes it a cold climate filter.

 

The factory airfilter is legit. However the toyota replacement OEM filters from my dealer are both thinner, and dont include the pre-filter. I felt bad when I changed my factory one.

 

Really .... interesting, I would have never guessed this was a "cold climate" filter or that such a thing even existed. and I lived in some cold ass places in canada growing up lol.

as for the AEM dry flow, I've run these for years in all my previous vehicles. I prefer them over the oiled alternative because you don't have to worry about messing up your MAF sensor. I've never noticed much of a bump in power other than on my old brz. which is to be expected as 5hp is hardly noticeable unless you only have 160ish to begin with like in my old brz. They've always performed well and they can be cleaned so I'm creating less waste and saving a bit of coin over the life of ownership.

Picked up a set of 2022 LED headlights for a decent price. Now I get to play the game of installing them!

They do. About 3 times the intensity of factory halogens with a wider pattern as well. About 2x the halogen headlights with H9 bulbs installed. See here:

 

What mirrors did you get? And where? I've looked at some at Suma Performance, but I'm on the fence about ordering some tbh.

 

Where are you guys getting your AEM Dry flows from? Didn't know these were good filters.

 

Did you need an adapter to connect these? I thought I read on some other post about needing adapters to make these work.

 

I bought mine from CarTrimHome. They're about 1/4 the price of the Suma Mirrors. They have the blue tint, defroster and sequential turn signal arrows. Downside is they ship from China. Mine took a month to arrive. The quality seems good.

I installed a cat alarm and a Hikeit X5 today. The Hikeit is incredible. I really did not expect the difference to be so dramatic. Wow! I’m positive it will be baaaaad for the gas mileage, but it sure is fun!

 

Got a tiny ding taken out of my drivers door that I did. $40 cash and 15 minutes later looks brand new. Waiting on my Diode Dynamics ditch lights.

 

Hey Randy, please update us after a week or so with what your MPG does.
Also, I didn't realize the X5 comes in black? it shows a white face on the website. Did you have to specify that you wanted black or did it just come that way?

 

Will do. It came with the white face installed but there was a black adhesive backed face piece in the box. If you look closely you can see I didn’t get the black sticker on exactly right. Btw, I set that thing on Economy mode and it was HORRIBLE! I already know my gas mileage will go down because I know me. lol I have not felt such power since I sold my hotrod Tundra.

 

Got a blue sea disconnect coming for my accessories, some S2 work lights for rear of rack and I took a chance and made an order from aiden James customs for the birds eye rear camera. Hopefully they get it sent out quickly and don’t live up to there reputation

 

Did you have any trouble with all the bumper edges lining up correctly on the sides (and staying lined up afterward) once you reinstalled the bumper?

 

It lines up easy. When I put it back on, I attached the 4 pop-out clips behind the grill to hold the bumper while I pressed on the bumper under the fender and under the headlights. After they popped back in, it was easy to replace the other clips and bolts.

 

I realize the bumper is pretty easy to line up for the reinstallation. What I was curious about is the area circled in red below - did that corner right under the headlight stay flat, i.e. lined up with the fender? I have that same spot on my PS that wants to come up a bit, and I have never had my bumper off. I was wondering if I took off that cover if there was anything I could do to keep that corner flat to the fender. It's not up that much, just somewhat more than before.
