I know what you mean. A 4runner with clean, high rocker panels looks right. I got plain tube angled sliders because I think it helps give/keep that high impression (at standing height, like when you walk up to tge 4runner ).

That said, even 0 angle sliders dont detract from the look if you are looking at it seated in another car.

 

Window tint was the first thing that needed to be done. Went 15% on the front, 35% laid over the rear, 15% over the hatch, and 50% ceramic on the windshield. Amazing how much cooler the interior is and much easier on the eyes. Not to mention looks much better.

 

well thank you, and yes Silver labs are real, though rare, they are becoming a bit more common as people are actively wanting them, so breeders are trying to find matches where both mates have the color dilution in their gene pool. For example, before I rescued Lizzy, she had two litters with Males who did not have any Silver in their lineage and she only produces Chocolate or Black labs. I'm honestly glad she's only in the mid 60's, I'm not sure I'd want a 100 lb lab haha

 

I agree. Kind of tempted to sell mine, although my kids use them as steps to climb in. I haven't scraped them on anything, heck, I haven't hit dirt in many months, and the dirt I do hit, don't require sliders. I might as well remove and sell!

 

Installed the Icarus hatch and map red/white LED lights. Before used red duct tape, which served its purpose but had to be put on and taken off each time, and then clean the adhesive residue it left on the vinyl. While pricey, a more practical choice.

got the GOBI RANGER rack finally after months of waiting, now time to figure out what kind of lights to mount on the rack. Any recommendations?

 

Last month I saw a Red Lab, apparently there are only two breeders in the US. Beautiful dog - not quite as red as an Irish Setter, but 100% lab. I have had two Chocolate Labs and they both were fantastic dogs.

 

I have the Predator Steps on mine (10 months now) and am definitely removing them soon. I have never used them one time to get in or out of the vehicle. I have stepped on them only to wash the roof. Intrigued with a very streamlined rock slider, but I don't really need them as I don't envision myself ever rock crawling. I like the clean streamlined look without them. Plus the $1,000 or more cost and the added weight. Good to hear others honestly question the need for them!

I feel the same way about the Pro Roof Rack.

 

The AKC still does not recognize Silver was where I was headed. There are breeders breeding for Silver but I'm not sure what they're doing. ie; in-breeding is not the way. Sounds like a good CRISPR problem

I've seen a few silver's. Honestly, they are great pups. Tho Kimo was bred from AKC stock and has papers, don't really care.

Seriously, I might kinda like the high look without sliders, but sliders are still bad ass. It’s freakin armor! Consider it a passport to fun. If you like to explore off road, you have one less thing holding you back from a trail you want to go down. If the high side look is what is the primary concern, there are sliders out there that are discrete.

Even though i got my caliraised sliders because they were more discrete, I still kinda wish sometimes that I got flat 0 angle sliders because they stick out a bit more and offer even more protection from feral trees and rocks running around the forest. Also my 4runner is borderline tall for getting in and out of, so it would help as a bigger step (even though I can use my angled ones already as a step with a little care). But I’ll make due.

 

Riley was my first chocolate. I lost him to cancer last year. Kimo is my second. And before that, I had a black that got as a factory return from a breeder I knew. An older couple was not able to keep up with him and he was pretty heavy--Magnum sealed the deal--he was a good boy (as are they all). All three are or will be in that 100 pound club.

Fox Red is not that uncommon. One of the guys at the pet store has a Fox Red from Elkens. Also Moonlight Labradors in Santa Rosa. These two are breeders of Fox Reds I am familiar with as they're near me and aside from Sawyer (the Fox Red), one of my friends also has a female from Elkens--she's a sweetheart. Kimo is from Dustin Retrievers about 3 hours north of me.

Labradors, allegedly, are the #1 most loyal dogs. They've also been at the top of the AKC list of favorites since 1991. They require an enormous amount of exercise. We play several times a day. They also have a habit of putting everything in their mouths. For example, I'll fold the third class crap mail and let him carry it to the trash--he has come inside secreting rocks under his tongue. Sometimes, I let him "pay" at the drive thru--not often cause sometimes, he's a little tight with the cash

I got the Toyota OEM rock sliders after deciding not to spend 900-1000 dollars are real rock sliders...I did so with the thought that I wouldnt ever be rock crawling...and then on a trip this past summer I found myself having to crawl over some rocks. Nothing severe, but the OEM sliders did their job taking a few hits and saving the sill.

 

The main reason I will be installing sliders (vic4x4) is MAD. Mutuality Assured Damage. (play on the cold war term)

you are correct, Silvers are not recognized as an official colour by the AKC, and Lizzy was (as I was told by the breeder I got her from) AKC registered as a chocolate lab as both her parents were supposedly papered as well. I never got the papers and I never cared for it. Part of the reason for not being recognized as a proper lab color is that there's some debate on how the silver dilution was introduced to the breed. Was it a genetic mistake, was it some cross breeding with a Weimaraner? Nobody really knows, but what I've been told by the breeders who specialize in silvers, if both parents don't have the silver color trait in their gene pool, you won't get a silver puppy out of the litter. Labs are great dogs and for me, are the perfect fit of active, goofy, playful and lazy.

I get not wanting the predator steps because you basically have a metal catch for rocks, but not wanting sliders ... I don't do any rock crawling but have done some light to medium offroading and my gas tank skid is dented and my sliders have some nice scratches on the underside and saved my doors, not from rocks, but from hitting the ground when going over some very undulating terrain. I like the peace of mind having that protection for when I need it vs wishing I had it and dealing with a busted ass door.

 

I finally got rid of that "right-in-the-eyeballs" sun reflector on my hood. The angle of that scoop is PERFECT for temporarily blinding me in early morning (heading east) or late afternoon (heading west). This sticker was $35, easy to install.

I tend to believe the recessive gene theory. Where I've struggled is why the AKC cannot accept that AND the color. They'll recognize the dog as purebred when coming from purebred parents. They know, scientifically, why silver occurs. They're ninety percent of the way there but instead, consider silver as a defect.

Had steps on my Tacoma until the trail decided I didn't need them. So, I went with sliders and I am thankful I did. The stock step on the Runner doesn't stop door dings. I have one to prove it--it also looks like the truck was slightly taller too. Sliders may have prevented it depending on their construction.

 

Damn they really do make everything for our trucks..lol. Very cool.

 

If I were to go the westcott route and keep the trd pro fox suspension and add some 33s, would there be any downside? Would it reduce the quality at all from how it is stock?

It's not what I did to my Runner, it's what the deer did to it tonight a mile from the house. Just nailed the driver side doors. No pictures yet as my Runner is black and it's night time here. Going to be A PIA. Already started the claim process. The good is that deer did not come through the windows, we were only going about 35mph so no loss of control and we are unhurt.
That's what insurance is for, but I'm still ultra ticked. This is the second time that this happened to me. Last time I was hit in same spot on my TJ as deer tried to jump my jeep.

 

Added a set of predator steps that came off a 2022 TRD OR. Heck of a price too. Now my 7 year old is a lot happier getting in and out of the 4R.

 

Few may admit it but we all work for our 7yo. Our (in my case) the teenagers. They don't rule the roost but the corporate decisions are heavily influenced by the members of the corporation. Congrats on your efforts to appease your shareholders - life may be easier...for a while.

are the pre 2014 4runner hood scoops a different size? would these work for the 10-13 models? im fairly sure they have been uniform, but would rather make sure before buying. thanks for posting this!!

 

I don't have a pre 2014 around to measure, but looking at pics online, I think ALL 5th gens with a scoop are the same. They appear to be. The vendor at the link above just doesn't want to say so in his ad, I think.

 

Put on some laminx yellow for filters on my 21 factory led fogs.

They look great cosmetically with the lights off, but when they are on, the fogs have a bit of a greenish hue (probably due to the LED bulb color, since it’s more white, pushing to blue). Kinda not sure about how that looks, so the filters are on probation lol. As far as the change to the lighting itself, however, I like it.

Laminx has amber filters too. Has anybody tried those with the factory led fogs? Do those go weird looking with the led lights?
