What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Today I bought a 6x12 Anvil trailer to go with the 4Runner:

 

3rd day of paint correction before ceramic goes on. Definitely don't recommend doing this in an 88 degree garage.

It settled down to about ~38" (driver side) and 38.5" (passenger) from the ground to the center of the front fender @ the center of wheel (like going through the diameter of the wheel/tire).

I forgot to measure before hand because I got pissed off trying/failing to get my skidplate off after idiot toyota techs but the bolts on too tight and i stripped the head of one of the bolts.

 

1000 Mile Dealer Oil Change - After Break In Period (Recommended by The Car Care Nut on YouTube).

Switched to 5W-30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic with TRD Oil Filter.
"Full synthetic 5W-30 engine is oil made from made from natural gas, not crude, using Pennzoil's patented gas-to-liquid PurePlus Technology."

Tech made a note that customer switched oil cap to 5W-30 (I'm busted now).

I've used Mobil 1 since the early 1980's, but I was interested to see how they can make Full Synthetic Oil from Pure Nature Gas.

 

I need to figure out what I want to do on my oil changes. I'm at 149 miles on it now lol. Want to make sure I start it off right.

He suggests 1000 Mile Oil Break In Oil Change, then every 5K afterwards. Makes sense to me, oil is cheap, engines are not. Watch his video.

Oil Cost me $33 plus TRD Filter $14, and Labor to Change Oil.

For a nearly $50K vehicle, that's peanuts, plus its piece of mind.

 

Just curious are you an Automobile engineer / graduated in Automobile engineering? Would be awesome to have the knowledgeable people to get advice..

 

Electronic Engineering. I've worked at Shell Oil. My father worked at Exxon (ESSO) in the Lube Oil Plant, where they made Mobil 1.

 

Oops.. If you were an Automobile graduate I was about to ask why 5W-30 vs recommended 0W-20. Never mind..

Owners Manual Page 523 states:

"An oil with a HIGHER VISCOSITY (one with a higher value) may be BETTER SUITED if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions."

"Better Suited" means a 30 weight oil, one which the 4Runner engine was originally designed for, not this super thin 0W-20 CAFE oil.

In South Africa and Australia, Toyota recommends 5W-30, 10W-30 up to 15W-40 Oil. (Non CAFE Counties).

In 2012 (Obama Administration), the NHTSA established final passenger car and light truck CAFE standards for model years 2017-2021, which the agency projects will require in model year 2021, on average, a combined fleet-wide fuel economy of 40.3-41.0 mpg.

Thus came the big push to save fuel by using thinner 0W-20, 0W-16 and 0W-8 oil.

 

Interesting, on my 2021 manual it say 0w 20 is the best and if 0w 20 is not available you may use 5w 20 temporarily. I bet I would stay with the recommended as I'm not above its use of high speed and load.

Just checked my 2018 manual and exact same thing on page 465. 0w 20 is the best and if 0w 20 is not available you may use 5w 20 temporarily but change in next oil change.

 

You're supposed to take measurement from the center of the wheel hub to the fender, not from the ground up

I'll get us back on track.

Installed Victory 4x4 molle panels and a Sprint Booster.

The Sprint Booster made it feel like a better (i.e. funner) truck. Set it at Sport 7. She got some giddy-up now. I did try Race 9 setting. Seemed, to me, that I was beating the hell out of it. Went back to S7 within 2 miles.

 

A higher viscosity oil may very well be better for the engine if someone was putting on a lot of higher speed highway miles in hot summer temps.

I do, and will likely start running different oil in the summer.

 

Aaannnndddd..we're back to oil.

Gave Brian a facelift to install Morimoto fog lights and XB (gen 2) headlights.

 

Received the alternate mounting hardware for my roof rack and getting them painted up before the install. Sadly, I may not be getting to it due to the forecast calling for storms pretty much all weekend.

I also received the Tire Pressure sensors for the wheels I bought. Now to just set up an appointment and go get them mounted on my vehicle!

 

Sh!t, sorry! I’m done! Promise!

 

Need to change the TuRDs oil this weekend along with other misc maintenance.

 

If you have a chance, could you update measurements with center of hub to fender measurements?

Nice video. How's the glare in your backup camera screen?

I went with the Diode Dynamics 720 lumen LED Backup bulbs. I learned the hard way that you have to modify (re-bend) to 2 wires on each bulb or they will fall out into the tail light housing. They are crazy bright and handy for closing my farm gate at night. There is a significant amount of glare in the backup camera screen.

 

I didn't notice glare on the screen. I never thought about glare too as back up camera is little far from reverse lights. Not sure you are getting glare from reverse lights or upgraded license plate lights?

 

Not my 4Runner but putting Lamin-X fog light overlays on my wife's RAV4. Did them a while back on the 4Runner and love them!

The 4Runner overlays are NICE but the RAV4 SUCK! Tried twice (bought twice!) and neither worked on the RAV=crinkled and wrinkled! Gonna change light bulbs on the RAV!
