What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Yeah, doesn't need to be lifted, but is much more common once lifted. The problem with it being fixed by Toyota under warranty is that they use the same type part that is prone to failure in this application. The way to test if this is the issue you're having is once you notice the vibe (typically around 40 mph) put it in 4wd. If the vibe/noise goes away in 4wd, then comes back in 2wd it is the needle bearing.

 

Exactly what mine was doing. Right at 40mph. Put it in 4wd, no noise. It's so smooth now. I feel mine was going bad anyway as I have only had this lift on for about 1500 miles. Now I'm good for 500,000 miles. So for around $170 installed with new front seals thrown in I have a life of the vehicle fix. It was a no brainer. An ECGS is a great company. I was really impressed. They even gave me some swag on my way out the door. Enjoying a cold one in their koozie as we speak

 

Yeah but right now it was free under warranty. Just let them fix it. If it was out of warranty it would have been different. Some folks have mentioned that they have been replacing the front diff when this happens so they may have found the problem was the diff and updated the part - maybe.

 

An if they don't replace the diff on yours you will be putting the ECGS bushing in anyway when the replacement bearing goes out in another 35,000 miles. I understand what you are saying but again for $170 to have them replace it, it was a no brainer for me. An I didn't have some dealer monkey touching my vehicle. Not saying all techs are bad but just saying it's hit or miss, an that's being kind.

 

I agree, sad but great service is long gone. Corporate gives mechanics a book rate of x hours per job. They don't get paid a penny if it takes longer.
If it was a major warranty problem I would simply remove my mods and trade it for another. Did that twice with Jeep. One lemon buyback and the replacement failed so went and bought a F150

 

I really need to stop surf shopping after a cold one or two! $37 so the bottle jack will lift the rear axle without slipping off. Took someone a few minutes to make. Even comes with alittle rust

Looks like 1.5" pipe. It's supposed to fit in the compartment with the jack. Have not tried it yet but it should

Looks great! For the lift, was it a kit that you ordered or did you piece it all together? If it was a kit do you have a link, if you pieced it together, mind sharing what it cost? Just the lift...

I havent seen many using bump stops, what made you want to install them?

I go offroad a lot in sand pits and dunes. I also live a mile and a half from pavement and have been considering which lift to get. Price is a concern but i still want good suspension. My road to my house is very bumpy and i dont want to be beat to death everyday LOL

I pieced mine together. I'd love to have a $3k+ setup, but I don't need it and went with a solid tried and true lift that won't break the bank. Some prices may vary now considering I bought all of it over 6 months ago and caught a few sales/discounts.

Bilstein 5160s - currently $157 each. I found a sale on these, got a pair for around $250.

I like to go down to the river alot. Tons of steep washouts, embankments, and scattered around so better bumps stops are a no brainer. Duros aren't cheap ( around $250, sometimes have discounts though) but perform better than stock.

I've seen SPC UCAs go anywhere $300-$500 depending on where you look.

I think it rides great in terms of comfort. But that's purely subjective. Firmed up the ride (sporty feeling), no more body roll, and reduced nose dive while braking. I have to figure out tire pressure still.

Again, it's not the best out there. Just a good (and cost effective) middle of the road alternative to a spacer kit or high-end.

Thanks for the awesome reply!! I've been debating between bilstein and the eibach pro kit for a bit now... The eibach is a bit cheaper but seems to be used less so I'm at a crossroads LOL.

I have a few weeks yet before i order so I'm just looking at options.

 

You're welcome. I don't think I've read a single bad thing about the Eibach kit. Especially in terms of comfort.

 

When it comes to buying something cheaper I figure there's a trade off somewhere... Not always the case but I'm normally skeptical.

But I'll likely go with Eibach. And cross my fingers LOL

As far as the shocks are concerned you are not going to have to cross your fingers... The ride quality is excellent and honestly is better than the Bilsteins. I love mine and have been using them for about 10k.

 

I may switch to Eibach, I always read good reviews but decided to go Toytech because I bought from a sister company with an old ford I owned and that coilover was awesome!..anyway the toytecs on my runner were a let down. Far better than stock but not impressed one little bit!

 

Eibach is the best. Having their springs combined with KYB shocks on the Z28. It’s a great manufacturer...

I can also attest to the ride quality of Eibachs being better than Bilstein (5100's) on our trucks.

The valving on the Eibachs is perfect. Bilsteins felt overly firm, IMO.

Yea i got an extension for trailers as well, haven't pulled the boat yet, but when pulling a utility trailer without the extension the 4pin would pull out of the 4runner every time i turned.... the 12" extension solved that issue. Also got it at tractor supply.

I have never dealt with etrailer, but i do know a couple guys with receivers similar to the one i posted.... They love em.... Me id rather the inconvenience of switching balls than spending that much $$$ LOL... Hell I've turned receiver ball mounts upside down and installed the ball that way just to gain an inch or so on occasion.

 

Yea both my boat and utillity trailer are 4 pin and 2" ball, thankfully... I use the same setup for everything. The utility trailer sits a bit high in the front but i never travel far with it. Mostly just use it to take trash and debris to the landfill, which is about 5 miles away and i live in the country where theres not much traffic.

I need to load the boat up soon and go fishing. Its like day 9 without fishing and i just lost vision in my left ear... Tomorrow i may go to the supermarket and measure the fish they have, just to make sure they were keepers

I usually fish during the week more than on weekends... But this week i started an automotive technology course at the local college which is monday-friday for 2 years. So now my fishing is being put on hold. Cant fish but about every other weekend because the wife works and im home with the kids. Im going through fishing withdraws right now LOL


I got tired of not knowing how to do things on my own vehicles, so i enrolled in a very extensive program. They teach everything. Complete engine builds, transmission rebuilds, brakes, suspension, alignments, steering, AC/heat, electronics, computer diagnostics, performance and everything. They have all the equipment even an alignment rack and a dyno machine. Im enjoying it so far but we're just getting started.

 

Loaded up the trailer with the UTV and hooked up the 4Runner for a trip tomorrow. Headed deep into the Idaho woods to scout for a spot for elk camp. First time towing with the UTV loaded so I'll find out how it does. Only about 2400 lbs, so should be no problem. Yukon towed it easily with only 10 more hp and about 30 more ft lbs of torque, but a lot more vehicle weight.

New to this forum group so hello everyone! I just mounted my bushwacker pocket flares this weekend. I've had them since April and hated the look of the plain black plastic that shipped... So I sprayed mine with Raptor liner, painted the hardware, and gave them a whole new look! Love how they turned out. Need to get out on the trails and get some better pics, but for now here she is in the driveway
