What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Interesting, indeed. I like these. @Tooly it appears you didn’t have to drill one hole in the frame like I did for my Apex Overland KDSS recovery points?

Good question, but no, Tooly didn’t opt out - looks like one hole is for 4R’s and the other is for FJ’s (I couldn’t resist looking it up haha)

 

That hole there is for if you're installing the points on the FJ Cruiser. These points will work with the FJ Cruiser, Lexus GX or 4Runner. No drilling required, the rear most bolt threads into a nut-on-a-wire that you fish into the frame through one of the existing holes in the frame.

 

Thanks. What caused the installation to be a bit more of a challenge than you anticipated? Other than the nut on a wire...

 

You hit the nail on the head, the nut on a wire was a little challenging to line up for the bolt to thread into. Could have used a third hand so I enlisted my wife.

Also a tiny bit on the corner of the factory skid interfered with the part of the recovery point that goes through the factory tie down point so I trimmed the skid a little.

 

Congrats Kevin, Now drive it till the wheels fall off. Lol. It’s a great feeling when you have no car payments. I have no plans to moving up to the 6th Gen since mine been paid off. Enjoying retirement to much. Lol.

I would like to see a photo of any failed factory "tie downs" from the real world.

because looking at this photo, I'd say they are engineered properly for recovery

 

Pretty certain your manual tells you absolutely do not use your shipping tie downs for recovery of any kind

 

And I'm sure the lawyers stand behind their recommendation

Thanks Rus! Not retired working from home W/ infrequent travels. Not sure what will replace this one when , I see it get to 70-80k miles. That's my standards to trade.

 

The longer you drive it, the smaller the list gets for suitable replacements. How many body on fame SUV's can you name that are also very analog-mechanical?

I won't claim that I'll drive mine " Till the wheels fall off!" because I never know what the future brings. But I will enjoy it every day that I own it and hope I get to own it/drive it for a long time. That could be 20 more days or 20 more years.
