I just installed the Subaru Kicker tweeters in the dash of my 4Runner, and it took three minutes per side to complete the installation. The sound improvement is nice for such an easy, affordable install.

I did the same for my 4R. I also upgraded all the speakers (rear hatch ones as well). All of the speakers (I'm guessing besides those with JBL) are paper. Literally. Very thin. I've kept my OEM head unit, but gives a nice "oomph" behind it. Nothing drastic or overwhelming, but def better quality sound vs. factory speakers.

But then this leads to discussion about sound deadening material and etc.

But if you wanna upgrade the front tweeters, do so. For $100 plus tax, it's not too bad of an upgrade. Maybe 2 beers at most (depending how fast you'd down them )

Forget the Subaru tweeter upgrade. It's still a tweeter and hardly does anything to the audio quality.
Get a 3.5 inch speaker from JBL or Infinity. It's a proper speaker that fits right in and is plug and play with available wiring harness. The OEM brackets can be modified to install the speaker or you can buy aftermarket adapters from etsy.
Huge difference in clarity and vocals.
Your paper door speakers will also sound nice with this upgrade

This. I went with the 3.5" Infinity using a 3D printed bracket from etsy. Night and day difference to the point where I primarily hear those now as opposed to the larger door speakers. Which will be next on my list.

I am kind of an audiophile and have gone down the car stereo rabbit hole in the past. I didn't want to do that here and thought the stock stereo sounded fine. The Kicker tweeters pack a little more punch and improve clarity. For the money and ease of installation, it was worth it. I had looked into other speaker options, and even though the installation isn't terribly difficult, I didn't want to spend the money or take all the door panels off to install speakers. The price and ease of installation are in line with the performance. I did turn down the treble in my EQ, so they seem louder and clearer.

Changed out the ugly silver front valance to a factory black one . I did it without removing the bumper and I hope I never have to do that again. I’m sure it’s easy for you young bucks with a lot of dexterity in your arms, wrists, and fingers but this 67 year old is long past my young infantry days .

Replaced the front Toyota on my grill. Posting this because in case anyone is thinking of ordering the letters from cartrimhome in black, well they're not black..lol.
They're more like the MGM color which I didn't mind since my runner is MGM, so buyer beware if you're wanting these letters in black like I did. They fit great though.

This will completely change the way your 4runner audio sounds. I went ahead and swapped speakers all around with matching Infinity reference. All plug and play, and now it's worthy of an audio system that should exist is a 50k plus vehicle. I did add some sound deadening while I had the door panels off. Did not stop the outside noise but greatly improved the vibrations and door feel. My amp/subwoofer days are over so this is as good as it gets for me.
I do spend an awful lot of time and energy into reading and identifying integrated amps, dacs and speakers for my home audio.

Nice! Which Infinity did you get, and can you point us to the bracket?

Is that speaker plug-and-play, or is there an adapter needed?

Its been a few months so can't remember where specifically, but its a Red Wolf speaker harness adapter. You plug the factory harness into it, then this to the new speaker. It comes really long so I shortened mine down as there's only so much room in the dash. The only somewhat tricky part is you have to solder the inline blocker into the harness (supplied with the new speakers). It will end up looking like this.
