I financed mine so I could get a discount on it after I confirmed there was no penalty for prepayment. Their finance guy was probably super pissed when I fedex’d in my first payment for the full amount.

You're gonna love it. Don't listen to the naysayers about longevity as the Magnuson paired with the 4Runners 4.0 has a long and well documented history of long term reliability. Some have them and some don't ;)

It is not about interest rate, I don't borrow money. I pay and forget.

Borrowing money is not good for your emotional well being. Pay and forget. If you can't pay, then wait till you are able to pay. In the meantime, buy a 3rd gen. I have driven my share of crappy vehicles in life

Met a smart kid and his girl friend on the trail the other day. They were 21 and had an 86 Toyota pickup. They said they were about to get married. They brought a smile on my face.

Poor grammar aside, that seems to state you have no clue how finances work.

Please explain how exactly you think not borrowing increases income.

If you truly wanted to increase income, you would use the money to invest in something with a return higher than the interest rate you'd pay to finance a vehicle, rather than paying cash. The opposite of what you do is how to increase your income.

I meant increase your income so that you can save and pay in full. If you can't afford to write a check to buy anything, you cannot afford that anyting. PERIOD!

Well at least what you meant to say isn't quite as incorrect as what it seemed you were saying.

In any case, just FYI, writing checks is not something normal people do to pay for anything, regardless of whether they are paying in full. Also, it's very possible to put yourself in a much better financial situation by using financial markets to your advantage.

I understand your need to keep things very simple, and being able to pay cash for a 4Runner has been a a noteworthy financial achievement you feel the need to constantly remind this forum of. Congratulations on that!!!

Most people are capable of much more financial success and security if they can apply the same discipline and don't refuse to understand how things actually work.

Interest rates being what they are right now, it made sense to write the check for our 4runner. 5% interest is darn near like doubling the depreciation. In the days of 0-2% financing it did make more sense to take out a loan though. Even if you were only getting a 3% return, you made more money having it invested elsewhere

Nope, never a good idea in my opinion. When it comes to assets like cars, pay and forget. My peace of mind and emotional well-being are more important than sime measly gains

You guys with 3% returns and measly gains are doing it wrong.

Nice job @Yotaholic I think that might be the first time you've ever used the words "in my opinion" on this forum.

That's an ever better feeling! I've paid cash for my last 4 vehicles and haven't had a car payment in over 10 years.

When I wrote a check for this truck, financially I didn't feel a thing. But if I have to write a check for a half a million dollar Bugatti or something, I will definitely feel it. That's why I don't buy those things. I know my limits. There are folks out there who write checks for Bugattis and boats and private jets, good for them, they can afford them.

A guy or girl who makes $100,000 a year, taking out a loan to buy a $50,000 truck, is like a brain surgeon who makes a million dollars a year, takes out a loan to buy a $500,000 Bugatti. We would definitely tell that brain surgeon to have a surgery of his own brain, but we ignore the youngster who is making $100,000.

I said "even at" to prove the point that you can come out money ahead in the interest game. I'm fine not going back and forth over who paid their rig off the right way though. Good job to everybody that has

You are probably in the 0.0001% who play games like that. The vast majority are looking at monthly payments, banks love them. 6 missed paychecks and they lose their shirts

That is exactly why I think it should be more important in our society to teach young people about finances so they can make informed decisions.

Meanwhile my wife and I put everything we can on our credit card and then pay it off every month. I've never paid the cc company a penny interest and taken thousands of shirts from them in cash back. That IS a fun game for me. To keep it on topic, my new grille cost me nothing out of pocket, just used some of the cash back balance.

These three are all you are going to find in my wallet, a debit card, $500 cash and my concealed pistol license. And a checkbook at home. Simple life
