What has made my 5th gen gear shifter super squeaky?

I’ll give this a shot first. I saw the video @djwantke posted. Maybe I’ll have some success, my squeaking noise doesn’t seem as bad as his.

Found this. This guy might have found the cause, metal rubbing on plastic in the console. He seems like he solved it, but months later he comes back to post the squeak has returned. I also saw Tundras having the same problem, metal rubbing on plastic in the console. I know you lubed the whole console, but maybe it’s worth a look. He talks about using a heavy grease.

 

They should name this squeak after you. “The djwantke Squeak”

Yeah, it really could be metal components rubbing on plastics.

 

I also developed the sqeak on my '14 limited recently and I saw this one guy mention "a metal detent strip" -- -- i'll likely end up checking into this after you completely chart the waters for us Derek haha!

 

This thread must be contageous. I’m starting to get a little squeak now too.

 

If that's it, I'd be tempted to learn to live with it.

I'm busting out the white lithium grease there where metal meets plastic tonight

 

If that is the case, I would bend it back to check before putting grease in there.
Not a fan of gear because it's not a permanent fix.

 

Curious to see the fix.

 

I'm just doing what the video says to do with white grease specifically, but ya man I'll attempt to 'bend back' first

Squeak seems to be eliminated instantly

Bend tension off of gear shifter metal detent strip that provides gear selection positive stop. Added white grease spray + synthetic grease gel at ground zero.

Just to clarify the fix was grease in the console?

 

Sorry I wasn't super clear in my excitement haha
Was partly grease but more the bending back of the gear shifter metal detent strip. Grease goes between the metal, and the plastic that looks like little steps.

 

Congratulations on finding the fix! There is good information at times from the other forum.

I looked at that transmission shifter, and actually ordered one, but decided to keep the Ellis Precision set I had that matched the transfer case knob:


The shift knob you got is very nice. I liked the feel of it.

Great job. How hard was it to get the console apart without breaking the clips?

 

@4Runner_Patrick thanks man. that part was easy, I did what I saw guys do on YouTube; remove knobs and just grab whole top console with one hand either side then pull straight up.

 

Just to clarify a bit more for when I get the "opportunity" to tackle this on the gf's runner (no squeaks at this moment), bending that tab in the direction of the arrow so it doesn't press as hard on the "steps", as well as the grease, solved the issue?
