I'm new to 4runs coming from a '17Taco and a '05Xterra Off-road 6speed. I can agree to most these things but some are a bit picky, and many are so minor that I still love this truck. If Toyota scans threads like these, they'd be wise to get a poll going to relate these complaints to demographics.

Get some double-sided tape. I did and it works great.

How much is a new frame? I'll probably end up getting a new frame if the body/engine outlive the frame.

I've added 2 thicc coats of FF so far this season only encountered salt once so far.

is that not a particular MY specific issue? I’d imagine Toyota learnt from the recalls and stopped making same mistakes after that huge recall of Tacoma tundra and 4Runners.

I bought these off Etsy to fix the cup holder issue. Someone on here had a link two years ago. These work great and do not stick.

I would do the exact same thing for sure! I think he quoted $7,500 with labor in an old video. Just don’t wait till we need to have them towed to Chicago

Honestly that's not too horrible. I'd definitely do it if the engine isn't too high mileage and the body isn't rusted out. But like I said I put on 2 thicc coats of FF, did encounter some salt but washed it off right away... and added another thicc coat of FF the next day. I ain't playing around with rust.

I get it. I’ve parked mine for each winter so far but lucky I can do so. I still had mine sprayed just in case.

Hey Folks- First post here. I truly appreciate your great comments. As a former owner of a 2004 Limited V8 that we owned for 9 years, I fully appreciate the 4Runner's durability and lasting value. After about 10 cars since the 4Runner, my lease is running out on my daily BMW 3 series and I'm thinking SUV for something roomier and more comfortable. I like well built stuff and the 4Runner's build quality and even the styling of the current Limited is spot on. None of the small issues here bother me, and I don't care that much about the gas mileage. Never thought I would say this, but even the 3rd row is awesome (as opposed to that stupid fold down thing in the last version). I've test driven it twice, and just can't get past the sluggish acceleration. Man is it slow and the engine does not sound great. Is this something you just get used to, or will I regret it on the way home. My '04 had a quiet strong acceleration. What gives with the new one?

Nothing will compare to the V8 you had, it’s just the industry. I got used to mine and it’s fast enough for me. If I want faster I take out my Acura.

I would get one now before the 4 banger comes out. My gut tells me that might be faster but not sound as refined. The V6 does not sound as nice at the V8. But we can only buy what’s available. Just my opinion

Two common causes of a creaking from the rear are loose jack tools which will be easy to remedy or noise from the tailgate latch. If it's the tailgate just wrap a piece of electrical tape around the piece coming out of the floor that it latches too.

My experience, you'll never get over it, it'll be constant annoyance. I listen to the radio loud so I don't actually have to listen to it, in my opinion the 4.0 sounds terrible and at times can be frustrating to drive.

There's a great alternative to this though, the Lexus GX 460 is essentially the same vehicle, however it has a 4.6 V8. More power, one extra transmission gear, and much better sound. That's the one to get if you're concerned at all about engine sound and/or power.

It does have auto headlight shut off. You can adjust the setting in the head unit to shut off when the engine turns off, door opens, or after a delay (30 sec maybe?). Possibly also a "never" setting.

Good suggestion but Mrs. PJ has me on a budget- I have some pretty neat other toys and don't want to look for Divorce Lawyer forums. I've also been shopping the Grand Cherokee, the V6 is meh, the 4xe seems better but any Jeep is the polar opposite of the 4Runner as far as reliability.

The lack of power. Ofcourse I knew that before I bought it so it’s not like I was surprised. I also know that if I wanted something fast, I should have bought something else. Regardless, I want the power of a Trac Hawk with the reliability and longevity of a 4Runner. Again, I know that is not even a remote possibility but wouldn’t it be freakin’ awesome? I think so.

I can’t completely turn off blind spot monitoring(side mirrors) without it turning back on after I turn off and back on the 4Runner.

The factory gas pedal mapping program is to partially blame for this. In some other Toyotas (Rav4, Prius, etc) you get a "Power" button that remaps the pedal, making it accelerate a little more briskly. Would've been a great addition to the 4R.

A pedal commander or similar throttle control device will help with this. I installed one on mine and it made a difference. Still doesn't make up for the engines lack of low end torque though. That's the main issue.

As much as people are upset about the four cylinder turbo, it's going to be nicer to drive because it makes its torque at a much lower and useable RPM.

Yeah, you can only do so much with a heavy rig, 5 gears, and 270hp!

I drove a V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee for kicks while debating what to buy and admit it was fun, loved the rumble, sounded cool and had some balls to it. But I knew I wanted something that would last hence for the 4R. Everything is a trade off in life I suppose. But yes it be great if we could have both

Off the top of my head, I can't really think of any other good options that will be in the same price range. Maybe an Explorer with the 3.5 EcoBoost? The new Grand Cherokees look nice, but yeah I would agree with you on reliability even though I really like Jeeps.

How long do you keep vehicles? If you are not planning on keeping it more than a couple years, it'll be in warranty the whole time so you shouldn't have to worry too much. I think the real value of the 4Runner reliability comes into play if you're planning on keeping it a long time.

Agreed. Leased an '18 Grand Cherokee Limited V8. It was all you stated and used about the same amount of fuel as the 4R, maybe a bit less.

Great points. I will take a look at the Ford too. I am a serial car trader, but keep the good ones longer. If I like it stays, hate it or boring- goes.
