Ya losing the drivers grab handle seemingly just for 5th gens makes zero sense

Yes that's a good start Lol
    But
May I suggest a glove box that's actually a glove box even remotely similar to every other car in history

It works better as is for me. Easier spot to change song with thumb than if it would be normal orientation. I don't change volume much so I like

    No tranny temp.
    No battery voltage.
    No driver side grab handle.
I still prefer column shifter, always.
    Wish it had the 6sp.
Wish it came with 4.10 gears.
    Wish 33s required no work.
Linear acceleration on the peddle would be nice.
Factory jeep-style spare tire mount so it could have a 30 gallon tank.
Reverse camera tracking the wheel turning.
    V8.
    What counts as minor?

My biggest gripe was that i felt like the interior plastics scratched too damn easily. The silver console must have been painted with the same shit they put on lotto tickets.
The exterior paint also seemed fragile to me.

23 model 4R here. The steering wheel is only partially heated and that needs activation every time the 4R is started unlike the seats - lame. Also, time is displayed on the head unit and the clock atop the dash, why both?

Previously mentioned black interior color and the backward radio controls are also gripes I share. I got a set of gray Husky floor liners to help brighten the interior, sadly these are no longer produced in gray.

I hate that there is no memory seat settings... on my other ride even the passenger side had them. How is my side piece supposed to be comfortable like this?!? :D

Count me in for lack of headroom. If my ‘23 TRD ORP had 2” more headroom, I’d consider it near perfect. :)

    Haha!

There are some good comments about annoying little things, and a few that really made me scratch my head.

I'd call these first world problems, except we are seeing third world inflation rates.

I also noticed the airflow seemed a little weak too but we'll see once Texas gets going next summer since I bought at the end of October.

I had the sulfur smell with strong acceleration too and some Italian Tune-ups seemed to have resolved it - but I haven't tried it with the rear window down. Previously it was quite detectable with the windows up.

Anyways, annoying things that aren't defects... but are more accurately called: mildly-disappointing-but-I-can-absolutely-live-with-them things...
    • The cupholder + insert that likes to come out with the drink as it's infamous for.
    • The cartridge oil filter
    • Fuel filler door doesn't lock
    • The "LDA unavailable below 32 MPH" dialog box that always pops up after exceeding and then falling below that speed for the first time after starting. (but I will take this every day of the week over the Kia's "it's below 40 F outside!" warning beeps and flashing dash light)
    • Fog lights are tied to the headlights being on (but that's pretty common like on dad's RAV4 and I know there's a couple mod options)
    • In my 2021, the physical buttons on the left side of the infotainment don't map to CarPlay like a newer model year I test drove does. (ex: hitting MAP > Apple Maps rather than the built-in nav)
    • I worry about blinding oncoming traffic with my LED headlights whenever I hit an incline
    • Minimal enclosed storage in the trunk, especially under the load floor. I know it's packaging limitations with the solid axle but hey, the Xterra has a bit
But surprisingly I have not found the LDA system to be annoying. But it's certainly nice to have the option to kill it and never see it again with one button press.

I'm planning to warranty the blower motor buzz when I get a chance, I read it's not an uncommon issue.

    • I hate how the A/C automatically comes on when you turn the temp dial to the coldest setting. Let me decide when to turn it on!
    • Couldn't they have just leveled out the rear cargo area with the seats down, so that everyone doesn't have to build a friggin platform to sleep back there?

Yeah, the 4R has some annoying deficiencies but there are a lot of mods in this and other forums that fix some of them.

Yeah, that's irritating. I just want the heat to be completely off, no AC please. I don't think the 4R is the only vehicle that does this, but it's the only car I've owned that does.

Headroom too. Not sure, but I have tried tons of combinations with the seat up/down and nothing seems to work well. You would think these seats would be a little more giving but no. HEADROOM it is for me. Seems I am not alone.

I hear yall on these issues but I tell myself it’s a 14 year old design and it’s still one of the most reliable and well built vehicles that can be bought brand new. I love my 4Runner!

At least on the ORP I'm surprised Toyota never offered power folding outside mirrors. Not even as an option. Would be a great help for those who park in a garage.
    Other than that, no complaints.

Broken connecting rods and trashed torque converters are annoying. This stuff not so much.

My only small gripe, I wish the cruise control would hold 5th gear as long as possible. I use it on the way to work, but foot drive all the way home.

I traded my Tacoma for my 4ORP, I thought the headroom in the 4Runner is light years better at 6’2”.

    1. Old yellow lighting on interior. Its 2023, everything should be led now.
( I did the upgrade already)
    2. Memory seats.
    3. Factory standard remote start. Shouldn't be an add on in 2023.

But if the remote start is crappy, then why bother in the first place? Lol

P.S. Agree on the memory seat. Multi driver families are mainly what the demographic for these are anyways
