    Jokes aside, in many counties, an emissions test is required to renew your plates. Part of the test is a visual inspection. If the inspector opens the stock airbox and knows to look for the secondary filter, then you'd fail the inspection. Not all counties require it. Some counties don't have a blanket requirement, instead going by zip code of the registration address. California emissions tests kick in when the vehicle is 8 years old. So a 2024 would be up for inspection in 2032 or so. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/smog-inspections/
