TPMS In my Spare or Not? 2020 ORP

You just reset the TPMS with the button, and the locations are reassigned. You may have to do something special, like hold the button for so long or turn the vehicle in accessory mode and press the button. I believe the info is in the manual.

 

Weird, my super basic '06 Taco has one in the spare. I wonder why they excluded it on the 4R?

 

I can confirm that rotating a spare in without a sensor will cause all 4 tires to fail to read. I have a matching rim and tire on my rear tire carrier on my 2020 Off-Road. I may consider adding a TPMS sensor to the spare in the future. I will be rotating the spare out, after my next road trip at the end of October. I will be interested in seeing if the TPMS system starts reporting, or if I have to hook up my OBD computer to clear an error.

Okie logic says the sensors have to be a Toyota part to be recognized by the system(no other reason). My best guess is the reader looks to see a tire pressure reading at a given location, not, a sensor ID# number. And, to function properly it needs to be seeing 4 locations if it's programmed for 4, and 5, if 5. If it does not(in the case of a bad or missing sensor) it causes the system to not report anything.

I checked the owner's manual for a 2021 4Runner - the information we are looking for is on page 425.

Spare Parts is correct. After rotating the tires, the 4Runner's Tire Pressure Warning System (TPWS) would have to be manually initialized, and after that's done, the truck's TPMS display will recognized the new tire location and get the pressure reading. There's a menu and button to initialize the system.

The TPMS system on the 2021 is quite an improvement over my 2019. It has so much more features and functionality.

 

Doesn't sound like Toyota needs to do anything. If the applicable years and models accept 5 tire monitoring, we should be good to go. I will note. Be sure to jot down the NEW transmitters ID code# before installation. Just in case. I understand it is readable once installed - if you have the tool that reads installed ID codes. fwiw

Question: what happens when you rotate tires? How does the tpms system know the new position of the tires to display them on the dash?

Answer: Hi! It can pickup the proximity of the sensor to the receiver and know which is which. It does take some time after you rotate them for it to actually pick them up again.

1 question; with the newer TPMS you said replace it and drive it for 20 miles or so and it will program itself. Will this work if you replaced more than one or do you have to do them one at a time. What if I replaced all four?

Okay. Had the dealer enter the new sensors code. TPMS now detects all five sensors.

fwiw If you have, or know someone with a scan tool that has the ability to enter sensor codes? Do it, or lean on the friend. Beers cheap

My dealer charged $125.00 to enter the code.

 

I bought new TPMS sensors for my Method rims at Tire Rack, I asked them to include the codes but they did not. However, my 2020 ORP recognized all the sensors with a couple steps on the in dash computer and a few miles of driving. When I get a new rim for the spare I will add a sensor for it. Since the Pro model is just a factory modified version of the same vehicle, I can't imagine the ORP would not read the spare tire also.

PS - The low tire pressure monitor can be reset for your lower tire pressure while wheeling to alert you of a broke bead before you jack up the tire or rim.

 

EDIT: It's my understanding the newest version of sensors offered by Toyota do not require serial #'s to be manually uploaded but in fact will be read by the vehicles computer after a few miles of driving. It sounds like you got the new version. Good on you.

fwiw: I've found 99.99% of Toyota's techs are completely clueless as to whether 4Runners are 5th tire TPMS capable. Just because you're told by one or more that it's not, means nothing. If you're curious and know they'll be running a scan for something else, have them check while hooked up. That request, shouldn't cost you a dime. imo

Now I'm hoping if Toyota Dealership can help (or not)..

 

If you purchase a Toyota sensor any tire shop can install it(most can't enter it into the trucks software), a software which has the capability is need to install the serial number into the trucks system. For safety's sake I took a picture of mine(sensor info) just in case. Ended up using it when the dealer updated my TPMS system. Out here.....it runs anywhere from$125.00 to $180.00 to have a dealer hook up.

 

@kmeeg - food for thought. TCCN covers a scanner that may well provide the capability to enter your own codes(a question you could ask him?) It's a wee bit pricey unless one thinks they'll get enough use out of it. I'm thinking over the long hall it may prove to have value? Hell, I'd have already made a good deposit on one with what the dealer charged to update my sensor.

Do you really want to climb under the rear bumper to add air to your spare? I don't and am fine with the spare tire not having a TPMS sensor.

I do carry an air compressor.

 

How about Toyota giving All season tire as spare tire for TRD Pro. Wonder how much they save on that..

 

lol, see your point. The big win is 5 tire rotation and not having TPMS system failure due to putting a non-censored wheel on the ground.

 

My 2019 ORP appears to have the availability in the ECU to monitor all 5 tires (but it's not fully enabled to monitor the spare) and my 2019 ORP did come with a TPMS in the spare.

Is that a thing? I just replaced the 16 year old original spare tire on my Nissan Frontier figured it was time.
I could see having a 5th TPMS if you have tire carrier rear bumper. Otherwise, I'd rather plug a tire than mess with jacks and lug nuts.

On this last weekend's trail ride we changed 2 tires on the same vehicle in the rain. What a Pita!!!
The 1st tire needed to be changed as it had came off the rim. I offered to plug the 2nd tire but the female owner's "Daddy" as she called him twice on the radio, was on the trail ride and wouldn't hear of plugging a sidewall cut on a trail.

Bumping an old thread.

Before I call around asking dealer service centers something I'm sure many have never concerned themselves with...this is possible on other models besides the Limited's correct? If I'm understanding what I've read here correctly I should be able to get a new TPMS sensor from Toyota and have a technican enable the 5th reading for my '23 TRD ORP, correct?

You can enable it yourself. The instructions are in your owner's manual. I run a 5 tire rotation. All 5 have a Toyota TPMS sensor. Your dash will not display the spare tire. It will only display the 4 rolling tires. So when you rotate your spare, you may need to re-register it. But how to do so is in your owner's manual. Then you will have to drive down the road for a 1/4 mile or so for the tire pressures to show up.
