I think guys something to consider here also is even if you can tow some extra weight and feel comfortable consider that if you are unfortunately involved in an accident while towing there will be an investigation and I think many states you could be held be liable if your trailer and weight exceeds the capacities. Obviously we never want to see anyone hurt but also I would hate to see someone sued or held legally responsible for excess weight. We are responsible for the weight we tow and taking safety precautions

Tongue weight on a boat is often in the 5-8% range (from what I've read). And yeah, far less cross sectional area.

The add on to this is your insurance may balk at paying as well...

Everglades 211cc Yamaha F200 3.3L V6, custom Alum trailer. Fiberglass / Alum T-top. Boat Motor Trailer combo on Scales up at 4700 Lbs at Half Fuel. Add more gas / ice and I am at the 5000 lb limit. Boat has a 20 degree dead rise, so it has a lot of Hull for a short boat.

Agree. Our tongue weight is slightly under 400 Lbs.

Yea, Its a 4 season trailer that can take a beating unlike the Coleman Utah popup I had. I'm surprised that it was in one piece when I sold it. The forest service roads rattle the screws out of it.

I'm looking at a small (15ft total length), lightweight camper with a GVW of 2700lbs. Tongue weight at 10-15% (from the manufacturer) would give 270-400 lbs. Seems like the T4R would be ok with this setup. Any thoughts?

I think you'd be fine. Use S4 and keep it under 65 mph, and take your time. Get a good brake controller, also, if the trailer has brakes.

Get a good hitch with built-in sway control and set it up right.

That should be fine. But keep in mind that the 2,700 lbs is completely dry and empty. Once you fill the water tank, add a couple of batteries, a generator and camping gear, it will weigh a lot more than that. Does it have trailer brakes? If not, look for one that does. And, as a prior poster said, keep it at 65mph or less. Better safe than sorry. If you've never had a trailer get out of control on you, let's keep it that way. It's not a fun experience.

Actually the 2700 is the max GVW, with all add-ons, gear etc. The base unloaded weight is 1650 lbs. Sorry, I may not have stated this correctly. It does have brakes.

I went with the Liberty kit. I didn't need the Elite offroad version. The only difference between a taco & 4runner with this kit is the wiring harness. So make sure its this one. They have a mounting kit too.

I have my dial at "4" right now. We went to 11 mile state park & it was the worse potholes I have ever driven. I did turn it up to 5 for that. When I can feel the braking is too much, I just turn the dial down. I also drive in S4!

I've pretty much decided on this kit. Unfortunately out stock, but I don't need it immediately.

Anyone using electronic sway control? They mount on the trailer downstream from the brake controller, sense stability and apply braking as needed to get the trailer back in control. They are expensive, but if they really work it would be worth it.

I just bought an off-grid expedition Saturday and pull it from Austin Texas to Oklahoma City it pulled it with no problem in fourth gear except on a couple of the biggest hills it pulled down a little that's searching to do in the shifting department and it got 14 miles to the gallon out of a 1800 lb trailer empty. But I plan on running it 6065 and not going through any big mountain that I know of so it should do just fine. You'll definitely need some Springs or some help in the back because tongue weight squat the s*** out of it

I need some info on the Sumo spring, I have a 23 ORP with 33S and 2.5 lift in front and 1.5 inch in rear. The rear springs are squatting really bad with a trailer with 275 lbs tongue weight. I'm considering the Sumo Springs but dint know how the affect the ride with a lift on the rear. Did you get the 1400 or 1800 lb springs and how much room do you have without a load

"Off Grid Expedition" is the make and model of your Travel Trailer? Have you looked into a Weight Distribution Hitch to take out the "Squat" Also make sure your ball is at the correct height.
