A friend of mine bought a new 2024, and at less than a thousand mi she bought new tires for it because she felt the factory dunlops were unsafe. She went with the Yokohama Geolander AT G015. She loves them, said they made a huge difference.

So to answer your question, yes, tires can make a big difference. And even the 4WD ones mostly operate in rwd, I think very few people would put them in 4wd just for rain. I certainly never do.

Ok, that makes me feel better about the vehicle purchase in general. Now just have to narrow the issue down a bit

I have Falken Wildpeaks that were recently installed. I too am in WA and have been impressed by them in the recent heavy rain.

Don’t look into it too much, I’m sure those will handle well in the rain.

Yeah I decided to go with falkens. But got rubitreks instead since there a little better for road. Discount tire has the 30 day keep or exchange. I think it's gonna help a lot, fingers crossed.

The topic of tire rotation and alignment needs consideration and should be factored into tire choice decision making.
More agressive tires, like AT, must be rotated timely to avoid tread wear patterns that make noise and vibration. And always require proper alignment.
Highway tires are less sensitive to infrequent tire maintenance. Another plus for highway tires.
Maintaining proper tire pressure and rotation requires keeping track of your 4runners mileage and its needs.
I have noticed dealers, independent repair shops and tire shops always over pressure my tires. Bleeding my tires down to 32-34 cold needs done after most all maintenance visits.

I'm pretty vigilant about the rotation, in the future I could be more up to date on alignments. I had no idea until this forum that less psi in winter was standard. This forum has been super helpful, thanks for the comment

That makes me feel more confident about new tire purchase, I'm glad your friend got it sorted. I had never heard of putting in 4 for rain, seems strange to me, and dont plan too. We get like one good week of snow here in the winter, and even then I don't have to commute so pretty fortunate compared to many people

its the tires not your 4rnr. Just like the stock Dudlops, I think the Goodyears arent up to the task. I exclusively run Falken Wildpeaks on my 2007, 2012 and 2022 and have zero traction issues in any weather condition. Havre driven 65+ mph on the hwy in a rainstorm and was glued to the road. Cut through 10”+ of snow with ease. Mickey Thompson Baja Boss are really good from what I’ve heard. Good luck!!

interesting you’ve experienced that with Falkens. Ive never had any issues in the rain or depth no matter what my speeds were.

i disagree. Im 80% hwy daily driver and my Falkens WPs are great on the hwy. smooth even at 80 mph, low noise and great ride quality. Drove my 7th, 1000 mile round trip to NC and back to PA on Falkens and had zero complaints. Same from my passengers

Isnt that what OP is asking for, our experience? TireRack,….dont believe everything you read on there.

I also bet my rig stops faster, shorter and more controlled than a hwy tire.

Thanks, thats Reasurring to hear. I too think it's the tires, getting falken rubitreks to try out since a little bit better for road vs off road. But can change to wildpeaks within 30 days.

Everyone is in love with the Wildpeak, but I think the Rubitrek is probably the better tire for your application.

I'm getting the falken rubitreks from my local discount tire. But they had to order from tire rack, so it's been a few days. Hopefully next 2 days. I will update and take pics after some rain. I already know they won't look as appealing as the ultra terrains or the wild peaks, but looking forward to peace of mind

Agreed. Still, you get used to a bigger look, going smaller is an adjustment to the eyes. I scoured the internet for anything about the rubitrek and all was positive, reviewers and plain users, all speaking to the road qualities, wet and dry. Plus they were 40$ cheaper. I got 30 days to try them out

Ahhh, forgot to update. Little long but went to discount tire and ordered the falken rubitreks. They easily price matched from Walmart, got them on a couple days after. It seemed like the back tires would shift to right when going over uneven pavement, not lifting at all, just shifting, like sensation of grinding your teeth. Went back had them lower pressure and check lugnuts, no change. So on the 30th day I said screw it and pay the extra 350$ to upgrade to wildpeaks. They were super cool about it, and didn't even charge me for the upgrade Got them on a day later and the ride has felt so much better, solidly on the ground, wet and dry road. Happy I got new tires, Cherry on top was I saved almost 400$ for not settling. I love my rig again

Shout out to discount tires, they took a lot of time with me, for questions and my indecision
