Tire choice

I have a friend with a Tacoma whose AT3's wore super fast. I wonder if they had a run of bad rubber or something.

Otherwise, I would say 5k rotations help.

i rotate mine religiously every 3000 miles and they are SL.

i take them down pretty far, but not too far to loose traction in the rain

 

Went with Michelin LTX A/T2 tires for my 04 tacoma with currently 90k miles on them and still plenty of tread. The rubber is starting to have little cracks a bit but they're 7 years old, which I think technically is past the life expectancy.
Been so happy with them there is no question I'll be adding the LTX A/T2 to my '16 4runner when the current set is ready.
They're not as aggressive as most all terrain tires but they have it where it counts without compromising practical drive-ability.

 

How did you like the Nito Grapplers? Are they quite? I am thinking of these for my 06' SR5.

 

275's, load C. Thailand tires. 40 psi on the road, 25 psi on dirt roads and 18 psi rock crawlin'. Rotate 'em every oil change (5k) I've heard some of the Falkens are wearing very fast. Mine are wearing as expected. I'll get 60,000 out of them easy. I do a 5 tire rotate. I'll probably get the same tire in a 285 when the time comes.

 

To me, a three mpg loss is a pretty big deal. Even if you don't care about the money, that's about a 60 mi loss in range if you fuel up around 20 gallons.

 

thats why I said 1-3. I may lose 3 heading to upstate Pa on a 3 hr drive for hunting season, loaded up with gear and 3 adults.

Now driving to cape may nj from my house in Pa last week ( 2 1/2 drive), i averaged 19.3 mpg with 2 adults + kid and loaded for a 2 week vacation.

 

Running stock size Toyo AT3's in a load range E right now. Cannot compare to stock though because I never drove it with the stock tires, these went on before I picked it up. I'm good with the way it handles and drives.

I dunno either although last set I ran was on my F150...and I won't run them with less than 3/16 tread in the winter (if I would, I could probably have gotten another 10-15k out of every set of tires I've run in the last 20 years. buy in the fall, run them 2 winters, buy new tires right before the 3rd winter, usually 40-42k miles)

 

These Michelin would make the most sense for my next tires given 95/5 is highway or paved county roads even though I'd like to do more trails in the future. I'd prefer a more aggressive look like BFG or Falken. One would think that given Michelin's status as a premiere tire maker, that their engineers would figure out how to add some sporty, aesthetic tread to the outer edge without jeopardizing that Michelin performance. An aggressive looking Michelin AT with the expected Michelin performance would be a huge hit IMO.

 

Just today at my tire place to have my SCS wheels removed from my 21 tundra Pro. He had the new Falken R/T in stock. Real nice tire I may put on my 23 4runner Pro when it comes in. Only downside they only come in E rated tire. Plenty time to decide.
