    everyone cares about the window.
More importantly, everyone's dogs care about that window.
Think of the dogs, good sir!

As @broken-giver said: EVERYONE cares about the window. It's not just about the dogs, either. I love the breeze I can get with that window open.

The sloppy needle bearing hasn't kept anyone from buying them for the last decade and a half. I'd love to see an improved design, but it won't dictate whether or not I ever buy one.

Also, why do you care? You've said that the new Taco is ugly, and the 4Runner is expected to look similar. Maybe you should buy a Chevy to let Toyota know how you feel. :D

Both the window and needle bearing are kept it seems.

If you want to avoid both, order a Land Cruiser (AWD so no needle bearing).

Was the needle bearing an issue in the 4th gen too, or only the 5th gen?

I'm only fooling around. I never use the rear window, so, it's a non-issue for me.

I've never used the rear window. In fact, for the longest time I thought my rear wiper was broken because the window was slightly cracked open and the wiper wouldn't operate. I finally discovered the switch to roll the window up. Last time I ever touched that switch. :p

The rear wiper is something they could improve on. More coverage would be nice, as would more speed.

I think it is the greatest invention since sliced bread! My dog loves it, she likes looking out and watching people, other vehicles. Good to roll down front and read window in summers, rather than using AC. It would be super hard for me to imagine life without it :)

A moment of silence to honor the loss of the full size spare…

Our Tacoma brethren are discovering this the first time they take a look. Seems that on 4th gen tacomas, toyota is calling the donuts “full size” because they have the same diameter as the normal tires. Well, almost. The donuts seem to be slightly smaller diameter.

That sucks. I've had several flats and each were far away from home. Being able to put on a full-size spare was a nice convenience for the drive home. And if I add a rear spare tire rack, the vehicle wouldn't fit in my garage.

Might be time to buy a new house with bigger garage.

That's unfortunate. I hope the hatch opening is tall enough to fit a full size spare, at least.

    This is the correct solution.

Question - in the old days, roll-down rear windows on station wagons caused exhaust fumes to enter the passenger cabin...is that no longer true?

No full-size spare = not an off-road vehicle. Just my .02.

At least we can add a bumper, body or trailer hitch mounted spare tire carrier.

Still true, since that’s just a normal physics/airflow thing. Although, the smell can be managed with opening other windows so less air gets sucked in. I can drive around all day with all my windows down and hardly ever get a whiff. It feels great, kind of like driving a nice covered porch down the road.

Like @McSpazatron mentioned, it can. I notice that if I wait until I'm moving, and then open the front windows first, I don't have any issues. But, if you open only the hatch, or open it first, you get a strong exhaust smell.

I feel the same way. I wonder if it will be possible to fit a full size underneath without it hanging ridiculously low.

That sounds like a lot of options, but not sure anybody would want a body mounted tire carrier even if they were made, and hitch mounted carriers ruin departure angle (and tears things up the first time you realize you have no departure angle).

That leaves aftermarket steel bumpers with tire carrier. The 5th gen has been around for ever and those options still expensive as hell.
Not to mention, it will take a while for the aftermarket to get a good design out there.

Hopefully, it’s possible to actually fit a real spare in that space. On the Tacoma, a real “actually full-size” spare seems to be equipped only on the top level super-duper-bro-pro trim, and it looks a little wonky with it hanging down from under there.

If a real spare doesn’t fit under the 4runner, I’m kinda thinking this is going to be a big pain in the ass to work around. If you’re using your 4runner far off the beaten path, the only other good spot would be in the cargo area. So maybe it’s best for folks to expect that loss off cargo room when planning off-road trips.

Yikes, hadn’t even considered it might not fit in the back!

In the old days didn’t matter. I probably inhaled all of those fumes, got home and drank from garden hose with chemicals, then climbed a tree, and finished off the night with a bottle rocket war with friends. Ah yes, the good old days.

Should be able fit a 33" spare (265/70-18) if the frame is similar/same as the new Land Cruiser, though it hangs lower than the diff pumpkin. Same deal with the rear recovery hoop which isn't shown in the teaser photo.

Yes that'a 33" spare. Looks small because the new platform is 4" wider than before.

Should be OK considering the roof will be 4" higher than before, going by new-vs-old GX and Tacoma numbers.

My 295's fit with room to spare in the 5th gen, so It's probably not anything to worry about.

    I'm probably over-thinking as usual.

Correct. But, as @McSpazatron mentioned, they can hurt departure angle.

Hmmm, so if you drag the diff on something, there’s a real possibility that rear spare will bring everything to a dead-stop. :(

Wow, really? I didn’t realize they grew so much in height. Must be to accommodate the height of battery for hybrid equipped models.
I think there’ll be a ton of little changes that owners will discover little by little. Some good, some bad. I won’t be in the market for a 6th gen for a good while, so it will be interesting to see how people adjust to the new platform.
