That was my plan originally but none of the mounting locations on the ARB rack line up with those on the roof

Appreciate the pictures! Thanks. I feel myself getting closer to making my own rack, but that ends up being more expensive that just buying one lol

    It's Rotopax Universal Mounting Plate
    Universal Mounting Plate (rotopax.com)

I got 2 alum bars from HomeDepot, shortened it, drilled, painted. Mount on base plate with 8 bolts/locknuts.

Do you have any recommendations as to how I can limit this? I want the light output but obviously NOT the hood glare…

Based on research and personal experience, I think there is really only possible three solutions.

1.) Place the lights further back so the top edge of the roof blocks the spill onto the hood
2.) Place a shield that blocks the bottom of the lights from shining on the hood
3.) Get lights that have next to no light spill aka very direct spot lights

My setup is halogen as I like the color temperature and throw distance. It seems like either laser or a shielded LED would work for #3. Currently my setup has a ton of glare and I'm not completely happy with it so I'm looking into how to solve this.

I love the look, but I feel like grill mounted lights would perform better in the regard.

Just wondering... is there a review on video(youtube) that has all the pros and cons of all the racks in one video?

    Two questions:
    1. Does the rear hatch clear your doublehaul when opened?
    2. Did you build your own mounting bars for the rotopax setup with angle iron or find it in kit form somewhere?
    Great setup.
    Thanks

I can understand that... but I am seriously limited in the lower-grille because of the TSS so the best I can do is a 10" on each side of the sensor... And if I want to go with an ONX6+ in the upper grille, I will have to do some serious modifications to the grille mount...

Thanks, no there is an inch of clearance between the hatch and the doublehaul when opened.
The bars are from home depot, aluminum painted black.

Yeah mine is a 2016 so I have none if the fancy sensors. Like I said if you can find lights with no spill you'd be good to go mounting on the roof line.

As @PVT Pablo suggested, move back the light bar and you’ll lose the glare. I have no hood glare from my diy setup.

What light bar is that? Is it more of a spot light? Flood? Combo?

    This is my setup:

    20211016_162140_HDR_(1)_(1).jpg

Not as fancy as others, but I wanted something I could remove for winter.

The side-rails feel plenty solid to me. And, a 3/8" carriage bolt fits almost perfectly in them. My basket feels rock solid when it's up there.

It’s a 42” combination. It was an Amazon item my girlfriend got me for my birthday this last year. It will probably eventually get upgraded, but it works great for now.

How is the basket constructed? I had a knockoff basket like that and the point where each half of the rack connected to the other half rusted and would drip rust on my roof. That stopped me from buying a real Yakima or Thule but I didn't know if the real deal ones had that same issue of the cheapo's

The tubing slides together and is secured with screws.

    sketch-1642863780430.jpg

I suppose one could coat the inner tube with silicone or something to keep moisture out. Or, just seal it after it's assembled.

FWIW, I haven't done anything to prevent rust, and haven't had issues yet. But, I've only had this one since July, and removed it for winter.

Gotcha, thanks for the photos. Like you said I imagine some waterproof tape wrapped would probably prevent that. I also imagine the powdercoating is a little better on Yakima than a "Rola" brand basket.

Very nice! OEM rails are hard to beat, bulletproof in keeping the water out. Don't get me wrong I really like the aftermarket full size racks but I need that peace of mind living in the wet PNW. Show me a full rack with covers on the roof bolts like the OEM design and I'd be all over it.
I love your wheel and tires as well.

I cant speak to other racks, but Gobi uses a system of spacers, washers and rubber sheets that seem to make a pretty solid waterproofing system. Add a little butyl or silicone and I can't imagine it'll ever leak. Mine hasn't yet and it's seen rain.

I have recently been hooked on this rack system but have yet to find anyone with it on. How is the wind noice? how do you like it as a daily driver? I am debating between this and the gobi no rise (I know the price is also a factor).

How is the wind noise for daily driving when empty?

It's pretty noisy compared to the factory rack. But I've grown accustomed to it. The utility of it outweighs the added noise. I appreciate the perfectly flat surface given the way I use it. A basket type wouldn't work for me.

Question of ignorance here so hopefully some grace will be given…are there any rack systems that use the existing support rails? (Besides factory of course)

or, any that use factory mounting?

interested in a half rack flat platform and low

Most of the current CNC’d racks use factory mounting points. So Sherpa, Prinsu, Victory and similar. There are a couple that do HD crossbars on factory rails. LFD comes to mind.

Most have full rack and around 75%.
