    Update on this shake/rumble issue: Holly Cow! What a difference! I forgot how this 4Runner used to sound when it was new because that OEM needle bearing became so frigging loud (sounded like running over bunch of crushed rocks before replacement. Old bearing was intact, so it seems it was poorly engineered. I went with Clamshell Bushing from East Coast Gear Supply and what a difference did that make. It sound and drives super smooth and most importantly - no shake even at 90 MPH.

    After close inspection of bearing I found that rollers are too narrow and axle was riding on the race (see wear marks on inner race):

    I didn't ask them because they have same answer for everything such as for engine valvetrain noise "It is normal" or "that is how it supposed to sound or look". Toyota is becoming new GM in their customer service and quality

    Are these the bearings that support the cv shafts inside the front differential?

    Yes, but just the driver's side. The other side has a bushing, I believe.

    Problematic Needle bearing on driver side while passenger side has ballbearing (rarely an issue there).

    The valvetrain noise is due to solid lifters. It is annoying, but normal.

    I sometimes think they have slipped a bit. But, I can't compare them to GM. Even my Chevy car guy buddies talk shit about GM.

    Don't think so. Only different means of actuating (lever/dial).

    This is not only a 4Runner problem...also FJ's and Tacomas as well.

    I might should have specified that mine is a Tacoma. I believe mine is the 8" reverse clamshell front diff. Not sure what is in the 5th gen 4R.
