This is the scenario that I see too often. People who don't know how to drive, or are just rude. Then, you end up with people passing in the right lane, which isn't safe either.

If people use the lanes as they're intended, it's much safer for everyone.

The safety thing your talking about is "out the window." Poor driving habits, and bad decisions have made decent drivers into road rage (a term not heard when I started driving 1976) "impatient" fanatics, And courteous has been replaced with rude left lane drivers who will flip you the finger when you finally pass them going 60 in a 70 zone, and your in the right lane. Good driving is something that you have to work at... it doesn't automatically come with the vehicle when you buy it.

"Drive on the right, pass on the left" is also the law- it's just not enforced very much in the US. In Germany you will get a hefty fine if you are caught ignoring it.

That is not the same thing as exceeding the safe speed limit in order to accommodate other unsafe drivers.

Impeding traffic is also against the law, not just when your feeling courteous. What's the name of that highway in Germany..... oh ya it's the AUTOBAHN, what's the speed limit there? Like Montana used to say "travel at a safe and prudent speed." That could be 65 or it could be 85, depends on your skill level.

    1. Driving the speed limit is not impeding traffic.

    2. The autobahn has listed speed limits for at least half of its highway network. It isn't a free-for-all. Even on stretches with no speed limit posted you can still get a ticket for driving unsafely- for example, driving too fast in the rain or tailgating.

    3. "Safe and prudent" is a pretty ambiguous figure, isn't it? I can't find it on my speedometer. Montana actually has posted speed limits of 80 MPH on some of its highways. Does that make it safe and prudent for me to drive 140 MPH, since I am an incredibly skilled driver and the "actual" speed limit is up to my discretion?

I'm sure Montana realized that many drivers are not capable of figuring this out on their own.

I see guys in massively lifted full size trucks with mud tires driving like maniacs in 55-70 zones. I'd hate to see what these idiots would do if they got to choose their own speed limit.

Of course, there are idiots in every type of vehicle. These ones just stand out to me due to the fact that those things probably shouldn't be going 80 to begin with.

The real reason Montana has posted speed limits is because of the federal government threatened to pull federal road money if they did not conform to federal standards.
If you want to se safe and prudent, look in the Wisconsin circuit court access page to get a real description, every state is different on a lot of things.
All I can tell you is I have never been in an accident by going 5-10mph over the posted limit, in commercial or private vehicle.. Ya I know I'm a "law breaker!" .... to that I reply, So F&*ki^g what!

I'm not throwing shade for driving a few over the speed limit. I'm arguing that people driving the speed limit are not impeding traffic, especially when they are traveling on the right and passing on the left.

If the posted speed limit is 65 and people are passing me going 80, I'm not the least bit intimidated, or interested in the argument that I'm the one being unsafe. To argue that I'm impeding traffic is laughable.

Travel the speed limit, that's great. You see the quote from A&P? That's the impede I'm talking about, not a person driving the speed limit in the driving lane, to many people drive the left lane for a lot of the time they spend on the road. And why would you feel intimidated while driving, twice you bring up intimidation.... that's what's laughable.

I think we're all on the same page here, really. It's fine to do the limit, or even the posted minimum speed in the driving lane(s). And, we all agree that the left lane is for passing.

I didn't bring it up, you did.

Implying that the only reason you travel over the speed limit is because other drivers will "run you over". It sounds like peer pressure; it's a big no thanks from me.

It just boils down to this. Speed doesn't kill, lack of control of your vehicle is what kills, and drivers on our roads today are unpredictable, so prudence is to know your vehicle and it's capabilities at the speeds you drive.

All it takes in one distracted driver changing lanes into your lane a car length in front of you when your closing speed is > 20mph (i.e. distracted driver traveling 20+ mph slower than you). Not in my 4Runner, fortunately, but I've had to lane toss multiple times traveling the speed limit to avoid distracted drivers who have done just this.

To lane toss is what us high performance driving instructors mean when you need to completely get your vehicle into the next lane over within just over one car length at the speed you are driving, then stay completely in the lane you tossed into AND remain in total control of your vehicle.

If you can't completely focus on the task at hand (driving with situational awareness), you're just rolling dice.

Driving 1-10 from Phoenix to LA or back this concept is not practiced nor enforced and it’s friggin annoying. One of the worst interstate drives I’ve made and I’ve driven across the country a few times.

I could make these investigative traffic stops all day long if call volume allowed, and because its a pet peeve I do when I can. More often than not people have no clue that you cannot "left lane drive." Most of the time its a educational moment w/ a warning.

On sections of I-10 in Texas, the speed limit is 80 MPH. Probably other places too.

As for the OPs question: I'm in the camp of tires being the likely culprit. I'm not a big fan of those Nittos and they are nearing end of life. So either it is a balance issue or a tire issue. That's not a definitive statement, but is most likely IMO.

About those old Terra Grapplers you are correct, I need some new tires. Since the original post I narrowed it down to failing front diff needle bearings because I get rumble at low speed, some screech/grind at high and CV axles way too loose in diff housing and can be rattled by hand when on lift. I'd have to replace those before I know if that is the culprit (and tires off course). As for 80 MPH - that is near speed limit (75 posted on I-70 pay stretch KC to Topeka Turnpike) semi trucks and granny in minivan will pass you if you are driving at that or less.

Interesting about the CV shaking in the diff. I don't know that I've heard that one before. Can you try engaging 4wd and seeing if you have the same experience with the truck on the lift?

Do the low speed rumbles go away when you engage 4wd?

Have not done 4wd engaged to see if cv shaft still rattles. But, yes rumble goes away in 4wd while driving>

Well, keep us posted. I don't believe the CV should shake at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure mine was rock solid still when I had to remove it.

If the needle bearing fails, it could case metal to drop into the diff and that would be very bad. So if you suspect that is the issue, you should get it replaced with the ECGS bushing immediately. If it is bad, let us know. I've never seen one that actually failed. FWIW, mine looked good after roughly 50k miles post lift. Keep an eye on East Coast Gear Supply for their upcoming Black Friday deal. If that bushing isn't included, or they don't do a BF sale this year, there is a 5% off code listed over on TacomaWorld.
