Rust on rear hatch - warranty?

Looks like im victim to this too on my wife’s 2020, 60k miles

would sliding some PPF under it be a waste of time now that the paints gone? Or am i looking at having to get it touched up by a body shop first?

 

That's terrible. This should not be happening in a first place.

 

unfortunately im clearly past factory warranty. Maybe ill try to get my dealer to cover it out of good faith (lol)

 

Clear coat is gone on mine in these areas. Color coat is still there. No rust.

Only 30k Miles on a 2022. Funny this is an issue after how many years of production?

 

id have toyota check it out before you are me and up Sh*ts creek without a paddle lol use and abuse that factory warranty while ya can

 

How long is the factory warranty?

I worry that if I have them fix it won’t it just happen again eventually? I imagine they won’t add a spacer or gasket to prevent it

 

Lol after spending most my time on tundras.com, it is kinda funny to me that it isnt known immediately over here (thats a good thing). Typically its 3 years 36K miles.

it also looks like some plastic washers on the bolts can space it out.

 

It seems to me that all of these are on vehicles produced during Covid??? Not an issue on my 2016.

My thinking exactly. Only have 12K kilometers so far. Will do the spacer thing on the lower edges of the moulding. I have a paint touch up stick. But since my 4R lives outdoors I'm not willing to try this until the weather in my northern climate warms up. Plastic panels are far to brittle in cold climates to disassemble without risking breakage.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I had the issue on my 2021 and it was fixed under warranty. I was at my sister's this week and I checked out their 2015 4Runner that's never had this issue and snapped the picture above. That space you see between the trim and body is what mine looks like now after being fixed by the body shop.

 

Is that gap only necessary around the edge of the garnish? Not through the entire surface area of the garnish correct?

 

The 3.5 million Tacoma tailgates built in Mexico don't have this issue. Just sayin'.

 

It seemed to be only around that edge where the biggest gap was vs my "warranty fixed" trim has more of a gap around the whole handle.

I think he's saying that as it comes from the factory, the garnish has some spacing from the paint at the bottom but has much less of a gap around the top. (That's how mine is, at least). After fixing, it has some gap all the way around.

 

Okay guys, have an update. Service manager contacted me and advised the pictures were sent off and they confirmed the tailgate rust is cover under warranty. The bodyshop needs to see it in person before approving work but looking like it will all be covered.

Called the bodyshop to book a time next week and when I said it was a 4Runner with a rust issue the guy said "let me guess, on the hatch/tailgate?". I responded by saying it looks like this isn't the first one you guys have seen, he said "no, it isn't" in a half-defeated way.

I tried to ask if there is a TSB and he was 70% sure there is and they install another piece in between but wasn't sure. Will share more as I have more.

Would love to hear more about a TSB concerning this issue. Do you happen to have a TSB # on this as that would go a long way to the rest of us getting warranty for this issue?

 

No idea what the TSB# is or if there is one but will ask when I take it in.

 

Just following up on this… any update? We just bought a 2024 OffRoad Premium and want to see if there are any updated parts that may fix this before I see it. Thank you!

 

I am taking mine in Monday. My dealer said there have been bad batches of garnishes that are warped on the edges which pinch the paint. So I am having a new garnish installed. Apparently with this garnish no spacer or gasket is needed. They apparently repair a few each year.

I have looked at a lot of used ones on the lots and see this all the time now. Another buddy had his repaired and repainted at another dealer and I saw another pinch and rust spot in his paint last week. His dealer said they put in a spacer but I honestly in looking at his cannot tell more of space.

21 ORP and a 22 Pro. I’ve read about this issue now dating back to 2016/2017 on the other forum. I’ve seen it on every trim also except for the Limited while looking at used ones or just those in parking lots. Although admittedly I don’t see a lot of limited models in general
