RTT or interior bed platform?

Good eye on the rubber bumpers. I forgot I added those front and rear. Keeps that pallet locked in place, no slop.

 

This is what I do for me and my dog. Its quick to set up. I can do it from inside the 4R. Its easy to break down. I needed the seats for my dog when traveling as he likes to sit up and look out the window. It has way more advantages to the RTT. Only thing that it isn’t better at is sleeping two people.

 

That looks great too! I also need the seats for my dogs when driving. What do you have under your air mattress? Is that padded or wood?

 

Luckily for me that’s the rear cargo sliding tray. It’s the perfect flat floor I was looking for. Plus it slides which has so many uses.

Its pretty awesome. I'm 6'1" and I get 68" of room to the back of the seat. Then since I have the 40% seat bottom removed I have another 8" of space and I just shove an unused pillow in the space. I sleep with my head towards the tailgate. Its really an awesome and minimalist setup for the end of times that are coming or if I just want to go camping or for the long trips.

Since I keep my Exped mattress in its bag at all times in the 4R, I'm ready for anything. Once I get a full time fridge, I will be all set.

Is this the Exped 10 Megamat? Or which are most people using ?

 

They have different versions. They have the Exped Megamat regular which is what I have and its 25"x72" and then they have the LXW which is 30"x77". That would not fit in my configuration in the back. Then they have a couple Duo sizes which the medium is a perfect fit in the back width wise if you need something for two people, but then gear would have to go somewhere.

 

You guys have some cool setups, if I was solo I would absolutely build it out for sleeping inside, with a family of 3 soon to be 4 a big ol 4 person hardshell up top fits our needs.

for what it’s worth I liked the Nemo Roamer pads more than the Exped.

I use my nfab rack for stuff like coolers, gas, wood, stuff i don't want inside.
For those of you that barely fit end to end, remove the bottom portion of the seat, that gives you another (almost) a foot of space; use two coolers or anything that can level to the "bed".

For my other car camping, I used this (the murano is gone, I got a real SUV this time)

 

Do you know if the Exped Megamat that sleeps two fits in the back?

 

I think the medium does as long as you remove the rear seat bottoms.

 

I'm planning a trip next May to meet up with my Army buddies for a fishing/camping trip. We'll be meeting up near Flaming Gorger, UT, then heading north to Jackson, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone Area, and finishing up in South Dakota. I plan to use the platform in this video (with some modifications to increase versatility) since I have the factory rear cargo tray.

I thought about that. There is no way I could ever sleep that close to the ceiling.

 

Don't discount how important head space is while sleeping. If you can't sit up, it's pretty frustrating.

That’s one of the modifications I plan to make, provide more head room for me and the dog. Other changes include full width platform contoured to the interior, removable panels to allow use of either the 60, 40, or both rear seats (with removing the seat bottoms when necessary). This idea is just my base.

 

I had a hardshell RTT which I decided to sell and made a sleeping platform/storage area inside. I went on a month long road trip with the RTT and a 9" high drawer setup that I used as a sleeping platform. I agree with the others about the headroom, the first couple of times were not bad, but after sleeping inside several days and not having the room to sit up, I started to get incredibly frustrated with it. The RTT was wonderful, easy to setup and take down but the days that I woke up to rain made it miserable to get out and put stuff away, and the days that I ended up at a rest stop or walmart parking lot for the night made it feel a waste since I couldn't use it.

I haven't had a chance to use my current setup, but I removed the rear seats and made a hinged platform to easily access the storage space under where my mattress will go and made room for my fridge behind the passenger seat.

 

Success!! I obviously need to vacuum it (my dogs are shedding a lot right now), but overall I’m stoked with how it turned out.

 

Agreed! Mine is just tall enough to be fit over the wheel wells, and it's a little tight. I might modify or rebuild it to sit flush with the wheel wells or even a bit lower. I do enjoy having so much storage underneath, though.

 

Do you have a build thread for this? Or specs I could use? This is the smoothest platform I've seen.

 

I have yet to check and see if my mountain bike will fit in the rear in the upright position (front tire off and dropper seat lowered) to keep it secured at times while sleeping or when the bike and vehicle are unattended during my planned mtn bike adventure out west from MD this Fall. I am 5' 11' and intend to remove the lower portion of the rear seats for the additional space to sleep in the vehicle. However, while going thru this thread I see someone completely removed the rear seats to include the back portion that folds down. For those of you that have done this, is the complete removal and re-installation of the rear seats a easy non-complex process for those that are mechanically challenged like me? Would it be easier to build a leveling platform in the rear to match the folded down rear seats (this appears to be the easiest solution). Or build a leveling platform where the rear seats have been completely removed to match the rear bed elevation? This option would give me an additional 2.5" of head space, provide additional storage space below the middle platform where the folded down seats would have been, and would hopefully allow me to put the front fork of the bike down to the floor board flush up against the back of the driver's seat. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Edit - I found a video of the total rear seat removal. Does not look complex! However, there is an elevated floor board below the folded down seat, thus there would be very little bonus storage space below a middle platform after complete removal. I think completely removing the 40% seat behind the driver's seat would still be beneficial in my scenario for ease of stowing my mtn bike inside in the upright position.

 

Mine does. 2019 Diamondback El Oso Tres (medium) in a mostly stock interior. I have the Victory4x4 molle panels in the rear windows. I use a bungee cord around the fork legs up front, and a bungee cord through the rear wheel in the back, coming off of the seatbealt...thing, on the side. My road bike fits perfect as well - 2021 Giant TCR Advanced Pro Disc 0, 54. Plenty of room for both, although my road bike seat very barely touches the headliner. I might have some pictures of them if you want to see.

 

Any pictures would be of great assistance - thanks! Have you slept in the 4R with your bike inside? I hope to monkey around with the configuration this weekend to see what is possible. I have a 2020 Yeti SB130 (large). I am thinking there would be some benefit to completely remove the 40% seat behind the driver's side.

 

Not yet. This is from like the first or second day I had my 4Runner...





I literally took the wheel off and wheeled it outside to see if it fit. That's why it's not strapped down and the front wheel isn't in there. I'll have to look to see if I have any newer ones, and with my road bike.

 

I also got shit on for this, on the 4Runner subreddit, because everyone was like "gEt A bIkE cArRiEr, LoL". Get bent. This is why exactly why I got a 4Runner. I'm not putting $8,000 worth of bikes (combined) on a bike carrier, especially if I sleep overnight somewhere, locked or not.

These bikes are not cheap. My first bike - 2008 Trek Fuel EX8 was $2,200 and I thought that was crazy. My second bike - 2013 Santa Cruz Tallboy was $3,800. My current bike - 2020 Yeti SB130 was $6,900. We bought our son a used Honda Accord for $7,000 around the same time I got the Yeti and I had a really hard time wrapping my head around the fact that my bike cost $100 less than a nice used car with a motor and central air conditioning. Still makes no sense!

I have a nice 1up bike rack, but this is all about being able to secure the bike when I am not around during my trip out west and while sleeping, etc.

 

My SB130 XL fits. Fork mount with the handlebars tilted slightly.
