To me, off-line maps matter more on a 4runner, than on a vehicle that more likely to always be in cell phone range. Automatic route creation is just one feature of a GPS map system, but the real value is in a map that lets you know where you are, so you can figure out how to get to somewhere else. That’s it. Crappy UI for route creation doesn’t take away the core and very real value of built in on-board navigation. My 18’highlander and 21 4runner have the same map software, it’s convenient and very usable, and therefore valuable. I use it often when out of cell phone range. I also use my phone off-line for granular navigation on national forest trails and roads, with the 4runner nav navigation running for a bigger picture.

I’m old school, so I’m perfectly fine using paper maps. But, as you can tell, I’d be bitter about being denied the most basic fruits of modern tech, just because Toyota decides they want to sell me the most expensive trim that will “allow”me to purchase monthly map subscription from them.
    :annoyed:

Just took a road trip from Phoenix at 1600 feet to the thin air at Flagstaff at almost 8000 feet. Its a NA engine too remember. This baby climbs almost straight up and no power problems at all. Home sweet home...

But would it be better with some boost? Absolutely.
My favorite all time SUV has been our 2006 Limited 4Runner. It just did it all for us.

Maybe a smaller engine with a turbo will be a great combo. I've been in two '24 Tacoma (sr5/limited) and they performed well. I was shocked and my opinion changed.

DO NOT waste your money on this stupid new gen. Modify your current 5th gen even more, regear it, supercharge it. It is a solid platform.

I agree it's a solid platform for sure. Nobody can argue that with any amount of intelligence.

    Lol!

Whatever you do, don't buy something new with more power. Spend $10K to add power to your old 4Runner. And then you can run premium fuel and get even shittier fuel economy. And then spend more money to regear it.

Because everyone knows, aftermarket forced induction is definitely more reliable than OEM forced induction.

    That's a picture of a 4th gen. ;)

If fuel economy is your thing, look at the new Prius, I heard it has 230 hp and gives 54 mpg.

    Here is a 5th

I really hope there's going to be some way to download maps on that ridiculous computer on the dash.

How insightful. This must be the first time anyone on a forum has ever told someone they should get a Prius if they care about fuel economy.

If only I had a nickel every time that came out.

Fuel economy should matter to everyone. For the people that say it doesn't matter, then prove it. Toss a five dollar bill out the window every time you drive. I would rather drop that cash on a Dutch Brothers coffee....or investments.

I have been looking at Land Cruiser 200 series as a possible retirement vehicle. I just can't get past the fuel economy. 12-13 mpg stock sucks ass and I don't care how much the "cool factor" is. Then one has to ask if taking that expensive of a vehicle off-roading or traveling is a great idea.

It's the same OS as our Lexus. No offline nav. Google maps through car play is light years better.

If it doesn't matter to someone, then it doesn't. Throwing money out the window not a way of 'proving' that.

Fuel economy is one of many considerations when making a vehicle purchase. To some, it's the #1 consideration, and those people might consider a Prius. I think it's safe to say that, when it comes to 4Runner buyers, most do not consider MPGs to be a deciding factor. So in cases like that, fuel economy 'doesn't' matter. Meaning that, when I purchased my 4R, I did not weigh fuel economy as an important consideration. If you decide to go ahead with your LC200 purchase, then you're deciding that the poor MPGs aren't enough to change your decision.

How about this then, if it doesn't matter.

You have 2 trims of the 4Runner to choose from. Both are identical in every single way, but for some reason, trim A gets 20 MPG and trim B gets 15.

    Which one are you getting?

Even though it still kinda sucks, it's good to know there's a workaround for it. I don't use the navigation on mine, currently. But, with that giant screen on the newer models, I'd like to be able to get some use out of it without having to pay some BS subscription.

I wonder what aftermarket companies will come up with.

Two different trims that are identical except for MPG? That hypothetical doesn't exist.

Reminds me of the modern day food spin where your steak and potato is half the size, twice the price, and they tell you it's better for you this way. Too funny but some will actually say thank you and hand over the credit card.

    I figured you wouldn't answer.

I guess my point is that your earlier statement was false. Fuel economy always matters. Sometimes it is a high priority, and other times it's a low priority. But, nobody is going to choose worse fuel economy on purpose, unless they're getting something in return.

There's a huge difference between buying the vehicles they want in spite of bad fuel economy, and saying that fuel economy doesn't matter.

    Not really a good comparison.

The new engine has more power than the old engine. So, in this case, the steak is bigger. And, the price is likely to go up slightly, but definitely not going to double.

Beats Massachusetts! Once we call it quits we’d love to retire there. It seems like best of both worlds - summers are cooler and you can always drive a little, change elevation for warmer weather in winter.

Don't be snarky. I did answer. You can't have two vehicles that are identical in every single way except MPGs. Something between the two must be different.

I originally thought we were on the same page here. I never said fuel economy didn't matter. I said, "So in cases like that, fuel economy 'doesn't' matter. Meaning that, when I purchased my 4R, I did not weigh fuel economy as an important consideration."

When buying my 4R, fuel economy was not an important consideration in my decision.
