RIP 4Runner

The 5th gen has been around for so long that people forget there are 4 generations of 4Runners before this with raked windshields. It's perverse that we have a 40th Anniv. edition and 15 of those years are on the same generation.

Stellantis is screwing Jeep, I like to see Jeep under Mercedes again. Or like that English billionaire who showed his middle finger to Land Rover and built his own Grenadier, we need an American billionaire to step in and do something about Jeep.

It doesn't have all the greatest parts, but it is a very cool old school vehicle. But I don't think that BMW inline 6 is too bad. I've never owned European cars so I don't know.

I was talking about the wrangler, Wrangler did better under Damien Chrysler. And it also did really well under FCA. FCA did amazing things for Wrangler

 

Wrangler flourished under them, they introduce that long wheelbase 2 door unlimited tj, that's one of my most favorite

 

Toyota's do not die, they just all merge into the same platform, same engine, same turbo, same transmission, same hybrid motor, same first character 3 in the VIN, and one really really long concatenated badge name encompassing every model...just kidding

 

But yes, they destroyed many Chrysler products. But Wrangler did really well under them, sales like tripled

Honestly the interior looks pretty decent other than the slight decrease in leg room (I'm never at the back so I don't care all that much) and maybe the screen being a bit too big (but not a deal breaker for me)

I like the trailhunter the most, color-wise and functionality. I've got a hard time with the exterior look wise and worse approach/departure angles

I always said I never want to sell mine. If I were to get a new one it would be in addition to what I have. I can't see myself getting a 6th gen. Hopefully the 7th gen will be better like you posted above. Although I doubt it with EPA and all the bs going on. 5th gen will be the true last good 4R IMO

An extremely awful treatment of a such a legendary nameplate. Not many were waiting for the new Landcruiser. But a lot of people were waiting for the new 4Runner. That new GX should have been the new 4Runner. Toyota screwed the 4Runner big time.

 

No, all trims have the same stinking 2.4 that is in all these trucks except the new GX. Lexus knew their customers are not gonna buy some stupid 2.4 taken out of a Prius

I wonder what the original 6th gen design looked like before they scrapped it and started over.

 

Yea the lever is manual, it does still directly engage the transfer.

But that wasn’t my point! The guy I was responding to thought having a manual transfer meant there was nothing electronic to break- forgetting that two things happen when you engage 4H:

1- shift the transfer case to 4
2- engage the front end half shafts and diff to the front prop shaft.


#2 has happened electrically in every Toyota made since the last T100 ditched manual hubs in the 90s I believe. So even with the manual lever ( which I have and like btw) there are still electronics involved.

Yes, but even the Jeep has electrically disconnecting front axle system. Doesn’t work exactly the same as ADD but is still very much electronic.

 

4th gen was great just for the v8. and personally i thought it looked pretty good compared to the 5th gen before the 2014 refresh.

had one in silver and that was awesome, but man i would hate to fill that thing now a days with my daily commute, remote starts in -20F temps.

but it was a hoot in winter time to play around with.

 

My sentiments, except I am still waiting to see it in person. Maybe it just looks better in person

 

Maybe it will grown on us as time goes on. Sort of like drinking on a Saturday and it approaches 2am closing time everything seems to look better. Suddenly that long hood does not look so bad and you sing kumbaya knowing you’re helping the environment.

The key is to just keep drinking until they take that away from us also.
