I don't think you can get banned for debating or disagreeing. It's the people that have to take things personally and call each other names that usually get banned.

Also, if you could get banned for arguing too much, I would have been banned long ago.:anonymous:

Dont disagree those things CAN be issues- but the systems and materials used here have vastly improved over the years (that's why I keep posting the Road&Track article over and over). We wont know how reliable this one will be until people get some miles on them.

The car car nut video on the new Tacoma was enlightening on this point - the turbo they are using has cooling of the bearings from both the forced oil lubrication AND a coolant loop.

I never owned one but looked it up. Those where head gasket failures. Not the block failing. Probably an under designed head gasket and that can happen in any highly tuned engine regardless of if that power comes from turbos or NA. The other thing that very highly tuned turbo engines can do is throw a rod, and that's likely to happen long before cracking a block. but we are nowhere near those power levels

Before you add the electric motor the base 2.4L turbo is 278hp. Thats only 115hp/liter. Thats actually pretty weak for a turbo engine.. Honda has built street production engines sold in 30k cars that made more than that naturally aspirated (125/liter in the F20c, 100-110/liter in the K20 series) and people put 200-300k on those without issue. Then they throw massive aftermarket turbos on them and push them over 200hp/liter and they still last for 100s of thousands of miles.

#1 FOD - solution: don't run without an air filter ;)
#2 Overspeeding - Not much we can do about this but I would assume that the Toyota ECU programming is designed to avoid this whenever possible by using the wastegate to relieve pressure when off the gas. Also note their reference to Diesel turbos running 30psi boost. I doubt this engine is making more than 5-6psi of boost.
#3 oiling problems - Again we have to hope Toyota designed the oil system well. I would argue that if any automaker can be trusted to its them. Oh and change your oil. duh.
#4 seal leaks - see above
#5 thrust bearing - see above
#6 surging - the article claims this is due to oversized turbos. We established above this one is downright mild so non issue
#7 extreme heat - Yeah as even they admit this will damage any engine if things are not designed properly or stuff breaks.

Pre-ignition and detonation damage doesn't know or care if its coming from a turbo or N/A. If you have an injector fail on a highly tuned N/A engine like the Honda F20c I mentioned above it has just as much potential for damage. But luckily these engines now have knock sensors at every individual cylinder that can detect and cut the fuel or cutoff the coil to that cylinder to compensate. If some idiot drives around with the CEL on that's the drivers fault not Toyotas.

^ I agree with just about all of this.

These engines are designed to be run under boost. Will they last as long as the old v6's? Time will tell.
But they Toyota will likely maintain a very similar failure rate within the factory warranty period. Which is the number they need to hit...

I have a similar vehicle history. I had a WRX and my wife a Forester XT. We traded them both in before high mileage headaches and went with a Tacoma and 4Runner with the plans of running them to high mileage with little maintenance. So far that plan is working well. The Tacoma is at 180K miles and the 4Runner is at 105K. I wouldn’t be comfortable doing the same with the new Tacoma or 4Runner. If we get one it will get traded in early.

Take a look on the Tundra forums or YouTube. There have been a lot of 22 Tundra engine failures and now there have been a couple 24’s with the same oil starved bearing failure.

I had really only heard about the wastegate issue. I didn't realize that engines were failing. If that's the case, I'll take back what I said.

Do you honestly believe that toyota the company that makes the best quality, most over engineered vehicles in the industry is going to put out some shabby 4 cylinder turbo motor? Cmon man that's ridiculous.

    Mall crawling kit.
It was open deck block design that under boost would let go, head gasket failure was a mode of failure and not the cause.

Disagree. I had a car with straight-6 engine that run lean for years, it was fine other than being down on power. I eventually traced it down to partially failed injector. In a similar circumstances turbocharged engine would have been dead.

This is getting ridiculous. These bearing failures seem like a major design problem. What’s going to happen to these when they all start getting up to higher mileage? Will any survive? Are the Lexus motors made here in the US with the Tundra motors or in Japan?

The bill to repair one of these engines is like $30K. I was planning on getting a Tundra as my next truck but not anymore. I’m not dealing with that potential financial disaster let alone getting stranded somewhere when the engine fails.

I wouldn't worry too much. Just get the extended warranty and enjoy that torque!

the bill to repair one in warranty is $0.

after the 6 year / 70k power train warranty expires it would be expensive (and I probably trade the car and not fix), but this is the kind of thing that if it’s gonna happen I think it will have before that point..

Power train warranty is 60K. That’s less than three years driving for a lot of people. You can’t trade in a truck with a seized engine.

And Extended Warranty is probably 120k, that's 5 years of driving for some. Might as well get a Ford instead lol

Then you have to shell out even more money for the extended warranty. I have never bought one for any vehicle. Then there’s the expensive of a breakdown far from home. Towing, lodging etc plus a long term car rental while the truck is getting repaired. If the engine blows while on a vacation then it’s even more of a nightmare.

Well if reliability isn't quite there, and we're talking about $90k... I'd be looking at the Ford Raptor Bronco or the Jeep 392 pretty hard.
