I have the Baxter adapter that goes in the stock location now. I like it but I will eventually get a relocation kit for the 4Runner and also my wife’s GX460. Spoiled with my ‘15 Tacoma right up top in front.

How much lower does the Baxter in stock location sit? I heard it interferes with stock skids. Do you know if it interferes with aftermarket, like RCI, C4?

Which Baxter model number did you get? I don’t see one on their website specifically listed for 4 Runner? Maybe I missed it. I saw one for FJ Cruiser using 4.0 engine up to 2014. Is that it? I would feel more comfortable using this location to minimize oil flow losses due to additional pressure drop added by additional length of oil lines. The alternate locations may be ok but in theory it will reduce oil flow rate. This may be the warranty concern? The Baxter guys argue Toyota Engineers screwed up by not having a backflow preventer in the canister style oil filter. I don’t believe that. Their engines could not last as long as many do if that was a needed design feature. The factory canister is located low in the oil flow path and stays flooded on shutdown as we all know the filter is filled with oil when we remove it. Any components needing immediate oil flooding on startup likely has a check valve in that flow path? If anyone has any more specific info regarding the absence of an oil backflow preventer, please respond. I think these Baxter products are nice for avoiding mess but that’s it.

1 Inch. I don’t run the skid since it’s a highway vehicle, but I did make a plate so it wouldn’t get hit from the front.

Ken from YT channel 'Offroad Hub' has a pretty good video showing how he did his oil relocation on his FJ (should be the same as T4R 4.0L). And if you need to eliminate the factory oil filter housing for a Solid axle swap or just to make more room, Instagram user @maxari_co has an oil block-off plate adapter similar to the one in the video

Keep in mind that without the forward skid and that plastic filler plate that ties the skid to the front bumper, the lower plastic radiator is exposed. All it would take is one small rock bounce to take out the radiator.

This is why I have shyed away from aftermarket skid plates. All of the ones I’ve seen leave the lower radiator exposed.

While this may be easy those don’t suck all your oil out, next time you use it, go under the truck and open the oil drain plug and just see how much comes out.. you will be surprised..

Realizing that this is an very old thread, my bone stock '06 Tacoma 4.0L V6 has the filter on top, upside down, at the front corner of the engine where it is very easy to access.

Heh heh, damn POS Toyota cheaps out so much on these cars.

First they take away the spin on oil filter, next they allow damage to the engine if you drive on the interstate without coolant. What will they think of next?

if Toyota Engineers had this oil filter located up and above on previous Tacoma & 4Runner models, I wonder why they elected to go back to lower side of engine block? … guess we’ll never know … definitely think this would be easier on maintenance.
