    That’s not how much an engine replacement for a factory. Just because they’re selling it to you for $15,000 doesn’t mean they can’t make it from $5,000.

    The 2.4T will actually operate at lower RPM's than the 4.0 V6, since it makes way more low end torque.


    True. The 4A-GE in my MR2 Ran at like 4000 RPM's on the freeway, and held up through all kinds of abuse!

    Let us know how she likes it. When I was considering a Jeep awhile back, it didn't really seem like there was a big difference in reliability between the V6 and the turbo 4, based on reading Jeep forums.

    My Scion xA 1.5 engine, similar. At 70mph it spins at 3500 RPM, and at around 225k miles, no oil consumption problem and averages 37mpg. I wondered how it would hold up when I bought it with 103k miles on it years ago, but it does just fine.

    Correct. But actual internal cost of manufacturing a single engine is much lower, not to exceed 10% of the MSRP. Example; the total "publicly disclosed" market cost is $30k then the single engine production must be kept at $3k or less. The overall replacement cost to corporate must be kept at 30% or less (Engine + attorneys + reputation recovery + factory overhead + tech labor, etc.) not to exceed $13,000.

    Whatever floats your boat, but don't plan to own one out of warranty unless money is no issue and you have other cars to drive when it is at the shop. I have a Jag, it is gorgeous and drives like a dream, but at only 30K it is already on second transmission, second differential, second active exhaust, and already had preventative supercharger-out service to replace coolant piping that known to randomly burst, resulting in catastrophic overheating of the engine.

    If you are OK with all that, step into Range Rover SVR instead.

    Sin4R: That has to be the worst story I've heard for - what sounds like - a late model Jag. Holy Crap. I too own a Jag. 96 XJS with 54K (with the I-6 not the V-12). Second owner for 24 years. Generally, a reliable car. But needs new trailing arm bushings. $2,800. Ahhhhh....the joys of owning a classis Jaguar. I've read where the longer term reliability of Land Rover is not much better than Jaguar. UK engineering at it's best.

    Yes, it was bad, but almost all of it was under warranty. I decided against lemoning the car and sort it out as it is a very unique Jag that I ordered with a factory-installed manual transmission. Still have it today.

    With that said, when I was shopping for a new vehicle JLR products were not under consideration. Perhaps 4Runner was over-correction, but I wanted something reliable above anything else.

    That's good to hear that most of it was under warranty. Looks like you own the last year for the 5th Gen 4R. My 21' is my daily driver, bought new. I retired in 22, so it just turned 23K No daily commute anymore. I traded my 2010 FJ Cruiser in for the 21 4R. I knew the 4R has the exact same drive train as the FJ. Put 167,000 on the Fj. Only required routine maintenance. So you should get long term reliability from your new 4R.

    So, I know it's hard to read humor, but, I was making a joke. I grew up with Jags during the Leyland era, I would never buy anything built by JLR. Now, a nicely used Maserati Quattroporte for $15k, sure, I'd do that. :p

    :facepalm: Wow. That one seems like “good enough” type decision by someone that shouldn’t have been making any decisions. Lazy design. I’m not convinced stick on wheel weights would clear that brake line. I wonder if the lexus and LC variants are like this.

    How about driving in snow? Snow and slush always gets stuck inside the wheels and if it freezes will rip that brake line off.

    Lol, I was kidding/not kidding about the wheel weights, but it’s nice to see it confirmed.

    I just noticed that the wire “harness” for the e-brake or abs is just twirled around the axle too. Seems like an excessively long section of wire to be unharnessed in that particular location. Hopefully that gets sorted out in the next model years, because it honestly looks like nobody spared any thought on routing anything back there. It looks like something you’d see on a pre-production prototype.

    And IIT has some of the best engineering schools in the world. I'm not sure how much benefit Tata derives from that, however. From what I've seen, the new Defender seems to be an oversized Bronco Sport.

    Unibody, 4-wheel independent suspension, just short of a foot taller than the 4R. The new Defender is not like its predecessors.

    ^Fun fact: the old Defender with solid axles didn't have an optional rear locker. There are situations where a stock 5th gen OR will out-wheel it.
