I don’t think there were any issues. I can’t find it, but I believe the drums were supposed to hold less dirt or something to that effect, guess the engineers were right.

I remember lots of articles and the Tacoma forums going on and on, I don’t believe folks were joking, they said Toyota was cheap and Mine Swear was full of shit.

2+ million 4Rs were built with reliable rear disc brakes, though the in-hat parking brake has always been shitty, both in effectiveness and in servicing.

The new brake hose routing appears to result from the new electric parking brake actuator taking up a lot of room.
Usually when a carmaker opens a second line to manufacture a part in a low cost country (in this case the US), it copies as much of the processes and machinery as it could, because there were huge investments made to develop them. Whatever automation Toyota developed in Japan to remove swarf and inspect for cleanliness (air jets, wash, optical scanning...) would've been copied over.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
If a main bearing is seized and spun the block is scrap, from the info I’ve read that seems to be the case.

Until recently, the service advisors had their own team, and any car they would take in was worked on by the tech members of their team. So if a job required special attention, they would ask their best tech to look into it.
Now, the teams have been abolished and every tech, master or otherwise is available to every service advisor. Infact, if you know a particular tech, you can request any service advisor to have that tech look over the car.

Sounds like some new shoes would have taken that from a death trap to a reasonable vehicle... That's more of a maintenance issue than a design issue.

My go-kart's brakes sucked after I sprayed them with WD-40 to stop the squeak when I was a kid. Was that the mfg's fault, or my dumb ass?

Edit: I see you were 16 at the time, so I completely understand, lol.

Official stance is mfg error, which is probably true. The defect probably came from the volume production / automation effort. That's why the issue was missed in the few hundred prototypes built by hand and tested all over the world.

When my OEM wheel cylinder blew out in an off road park and dumped out all the brake fluid, I had to get a ride in buddy's Jeep to get replacement parts. Buddy's first reaction wasn't about Toyota reliability. Rather, it was "you guys still have drum brakes?"

and we are only at 17 months on our tundra, 8-dec-22 build date, drove off the lot on 22-feb-23.

well she is not overly thrilled about the blueprint color. just like we didnt care for the same color on our 2012 tacoma tx, but it was really rare to get a tx model in ND. most i saw were from GST/SET region plates.

she wants a new tundra if they come out blazing blue pearl again or anything that is a lighter shade of blue. she will not drive a truck that is not a shade of blue. already have set aside a budget to trade in for the same exact tundra but in a better blue color.

Two different things. I’m talking about people joking now about “should have kept the drums.”
Toyota definitely is cheap and Swears was definitely full of shit about drums being better off-road.

No they are still claiming debris. Mechanics that have seen the bearing damage and (allegedly) new bearing part numbers say otherwise. Also the fact that they knew about these engine failures for two years and did nothing to prevent this debris issue doesn’t jive. Especially with a company that supposedly shuts down an assembly line whenever any worker sees a problem.

I’m not sure anymore. If this is the future of Toyota I might as well just drive a nicer Grand Cherokee and trade it in frequently.

Drum brakes actually have a number of points going for them. Cheaper to make. They are self energizing (reducing the boost needed), and the closed design keeps mud/salt/ water out of them in all but complete submerged situations. They also tend to last a lot longer than disks.

downside is they are heavier, a pain to work on and need periodic adjustment. And more subject to overheating and fade in high performance applications.

I would think they copy ALL of the process unless there is a really good reason not to. I think we give labor skill differences too much credit here, we are not talking hand built Ferraris, much of the line is fully or semi automated. Even the manual steps they use jigs, automated wrenches with preset torque, premeasured fluids, etc to eliminate sources of human error.

The 2.4T will actually operate at lower RPM's than the 4.0 V6, since it makes way more low end torque.

True. The 4A-GE in my MR2 Ran at like 4000 RPM's on the freeway, and held up through all kinds of abuse!

Let us know how she likes it. When I was considering a Jeep awhile back, it didn't really seem like there was a big difference in reliability between the V6 and the turbo 4, based on reading Jeep forums.
