I agree that looks very nice. I would think that makes more sense versus letting dirt/dust debris go behind the (if you had a spacer) but I am no engineer here at all. But it looks like it work well and looks proper

An independent body shop near me. This is a 2020 and the dealer told me to pound sand. The shop saw the gasket in the parts diagram so they installed it after prep & paint of the gate/hatch.

So the dealer did not want to help you at Scotty? That seal/gasket you have do you know if that is the same part number Wawa and I have in our posts? Mine is 2021 ORP with the button arrows for the rear window (not an old school key)

    Now Im confused.

I may get some touch up paint and do this myself as my warranty is expired and I don't see any rust forming.

Remove garnish, touch up paint, install new gasket.
(I'll have to remove the large inner trim piece when I do my speaker upgrade anyways, so a few extra bolts and some plastic clips will remove the garnish)

Problem is do I use PN
    76819-35030
    76819-35020

I have a 2022 TRD ORP. The garnish the has the up/down arrows, not the key hole.
    Toyota website says
030- Fitment not available at this time
020- May not fit your selected vehicle

No, this dealer is not normally very helpful. First he said it was salt seeping out of the crack, then he said to "touch it up" from the outside. He also said he has never seen this before which is hard to believe in Northern Wisco (salty roads, rust).

I do not know the part number, the shop did not write it on my bill. They asked which trim I had (sr5 premium) they also asked if my doors unlock automatically when I grab the door handle with the fob in my pocket. So that auto-unlock was related to the parts diagram that he found.

Thanks for the note. Yeah mine is an ORP and it’s all black plastic (the garnish). Where as yours seems color matched where the 4Runner letters are

I would think there should be a similar rubber garnish. Gosh why does this have to be so difficult

I regret not getting both. The other one was only $9. If the one i have doesn't work, I'll just order the other one. Or just get some padding from the hardware store and make one. I'm more worried about breaking the black garnish piece. Seen a few videos where it snapped during removal

    That's a very good point.

I wonder if I should buy an extra garnish from a local dealership and return it if mine doesn't break during removal

Hmm a foam piece touching the body.. that’s probably worse than leaving a gap… there will be dust and sand between the foam and body for sure.

I checked on the 2024. It seems like there may be a gasket behind it, but it's not visible and the plastic still touches the paint at the top around the round part. There is a very slight gap around parts of the top edges, just enough to slip a piece of paper in the gap. At the outer tips, there seems to be something like rubber in there if I slide a piece of paper between the plastic and the paint. With it still touching the paint at the top, I don't know if this is an adequate solution.

I just looked at maybe 6 new 4Rs on the lot limited, sr5, ORP and Pros. I do not think this has been rectified for 2024 (and would guess they would not if it’s been an issue since 2016 from threads I read). I saw a new black sr5 with the slightest blemish on that garnish corner and it’s still on the lot.

I did not notice any gasket or additional space myself. They all looked similar

I can slide a piece of paper between the paint and the very tips of the ends. It drags on what feels like rubber, but this is only at the very outer tips. The rest of the top has a slight gap, enough to slip paper easily, but at the top, it looks to me like the round part is touching the plastic. If it has some pressure relief behind it, that might be ok, but I am lacking confidence in this setup.

I suspect that I will have to remove it to see what is back there whenever I upgrade the tailgate speakers. Until then, no slamming the tailgate. I have a feeling that's when most of this occurs.

Here is what my 2023 looks like. Is this good?

Why can’t we have a reference example of how the garnish should fit? lol wtf

@Yobruhitsme is this rubber in your photo? I can't see any rubber on the 2024 but if I slide a piece of paper between the paint and the plastic at the tips of the garnish, it drags as though there is rubber in there.

I dunno.. can do a test later.. but the bigger question is.. do we even know what tf is the proper installation of the garnish?

So I studied the pieces in question today on the back of my truck. Looks to me that if the plastic piece is mounted just millimeters too high (1 to 3mm?), then the two bottom corners will contact the paint and rub.

Can anyone confirm? I’m wondering how much (if any) play there is when installing/replacing that plastic piece. It might be wise to install it at its lowest possible point? (Assuming there is some adjustability)

I can’t say for certain, obviously, without having hands on the piece in question up against the tailgate.

I went to check the emblem on a 2024 ORP today. I noticed you couldn't really see the rubber gasket, but there was definitely something there. When I pushed on the emblem trim corners where they're known to rub I got zero movement, it would not touch the paint. The gap was still very small, but there was absolutely no rubbing, no matter how hard i pushed. I could barely see the rubber inside preventing movement. I believe the correct application of the rubber seal is not so much to increase the gap, but more so to be invisible inside and prevent any movement resulting in no rubbing.

    My two cents,

My experience on the 2024 TRD OR is similar but not quite the same. There is something behind it as I can feel it dragging on a piece of paper slipped between the plastic and the paint at the tips. Unfortunately, I do not trust it as I cannot see behind the garnish, and it still appears to be in contact with the paint around the round part at the top on mine. Someone earlier said it might depend on a few millimeters of shift up or down, and I am inclined to agree.

I had one body shop today suggest a repair they did for someone. Apparently there is a rubber gasket behind the garnish and after the paint was repaired they got a new factory gasket, and flipped that inside out. Apparently, that effectively made the gasket more visible on the outside around the perimeter of the garnish. The rubber being flipped inside out and against the paint presumably stops the garnish from etching the paint. Just wanted to share what I learned hoping to get more specifics when i can take mine in. Hopefully we can all help each other out.

You can tell just by looking at it that shifting it up just a very small distance would cause the plastic to contact the paint. So I don’t think it’s a gasket issue. It’s a placement issue.

I started to work on the tailgate but realized immediately that my little plastic pry bar is not going to be strong enough. So I decided to swap out the hood scoop. So glad that was a mod I wanted to do. I've only had this for a couple on months and there is only 1019 miles on it and the scoop has already removed some paint in 4 spots

Same thing happened to me. Discovered it when I discovered the rear hatch rust. What I did was remove the plastic scoop insert and removed the rubber gaskets that go around it. I then ordered new rubber gaskets and repositioned them closer to the edge insert. That seems to have solved the problem.

I just inspected my hood scoop. It doesn't seem to be touching the paint. There is a gap all the way around. There doesn't seem to be much consistency. My tailgate garnish touches the paint at the rounded part of the top. :notsure:

Ah. Smart. Wish I had done that. I installed a new black scoop but positioned the gaskets in the same spot. D'oh. I did put paint protection film all the way around though so hopefully that's good enough

My scoop wasn't touching anywhere either.
