Moon Walker, Sorry to hear it, that sucks.
If the other equip you have doesn't work out maybe you can find a good deal on the used market for a replacement. Places like www.fredmiranda.com or craigslist might be worth a look.

Gonna be hard to detach from that zoom, isn't it? P1000 was going to be my next move, eventually. Sounds like they made some decent improvements over the P900.

Yes sir, that lack of zoom is really going to hurt, especially since I go out to an eagle nest in my area pretty much every week......oh well give them a break from me I suppose lol

Here's what I would do in your position. I would take a few decent photos of any visible damage. Get all pertinent info from the camera (serial number, etc.).Then I would find Nikon's customer service email address. I would give them the honest story, all the info you have and the pics of the camera, and how you've used the camera to record life events and such. Explain the functionality problem(s), and ask politely about repair options, or any other recommendations they have. Maybe even ask if they have a replacement P900 available to sell. You might be surprised at what they'll do for you. I've found such contacts to be very rewarding.

Tell them about the eagle nest.

To piggyback on what Daddykool said, it might be worth it to send it in to Nikon for service. We've had my wife's D8xx cameras and a couple lenses repaired. Pricing seemed reasonable (relative to replacing the equipment).

And even if you don't want to have it serviced, some companies will send things like big discounts or even free replacements just because you contacted them. I once had Duracell batteries leak and destroy my (years ago) camera flash. Even though the batteries were a couple of years expired, they sent me a $100 check to replace the flash. It would probably be $300 today. Needless to say, I buy Duracell at every opportunity.

Yup. You don't know if you don't ask.

Re: Batteries- Not sure if it's just Duracell, but they have a policy that they will pay to repair or replace a component damaged by their leaking batteries. I've had a couple things get damaged and they paid with little issue.

We got tired of finding leaking batteries in things that sat for a while (flashlights mostly, some remotes) so we switched to rechargeables. Since rechargeable batteries are much less prone to leakage (as are lithium) my wife switched over to all rechargeables in everything for her camera gear- although she brings a pack of non-rechargeables for her flashes because they tend yield better flash power. Seems most things she has now are self-contained packs so she's down to just AAs for her flashes, I think.

Yeah, those Duracell AA batteries were a few years expired. Still nice of them. Like you, I mostly use rechargeable batteries today.

Spring in Yellowstone after the 1988 fire. A scanned print, not very good but a favorite of mine due to the memories.

Lol... no, I actually pulled it out today, it's heavier than the p900, kinda sucks, and I couldn't really even get a good shot of any back yard birds, the zoom is lacking really bad

70-300 isn’t bad. It’s not going to bring things close, but I’ve been using my 28-300 a lot this year for closer subjects. Bugs, plants, pets, etc. Just look for things that interest you and fit the camera’s capabilities.

Those branches and stuff add depth and make photos more interesting imo, when the subject is in focus.

This is the biggest lens I have. It’s a Nikon 600mm f4. We were on a cruise ship on the Amazon River when I took this picture.
