People are not buying EVs

Water as power was inventive 60 yrs ago. Gov’t shut it down.

 

This is my first year not doing my own taxes - self employment makes the whole thing a pain the arse.

 

Africa is where we take resources from. Asia is where we send all our electronic waste to.

 

Except that centralized generation of power is more efficient than distributed internal combustion engines. After all, the grid can accommodate wind, solar, hydroelectric, etc. Your car can only use one source of fuel.

 

While I don't like being near things, there are plenty of people who would actually be happier if everything they needed was close by.

Heck, most everyone would probably be happier with less stuff after a period of adjustment. Consumerism doesn't actually make you happier.

Just pretend it's Opposite Day and you can get to the truth on most of that stuff.

 

Consumerism is about acquiring things. Being in a state of constant acquisition means you've always got a hole in your life to fill. As you get more "stuff" you adjust to having that stuff, which leaves you effectively running on a treadmill.

A lack of money, or a lack of objects, can certainly make one miserable. Or even dead. But more stuff is fleeting and has diminishing returns from the happiness perspective.

This has been studied and validated.

What does tend to produce happiness that is both greater and more durable are experiences. Experiences create memories and stories - and unlike an object that eventually wears out - memories have a funny way of potentially getting better than the real thing that they were based upon.

 

I can agree with this. This is why I mostly spend money on things that get me out of the city, in the woods, on a lake, river, ocean, etc. Kayak, fishing gear, 4Runner, camping gear, gas. My home might not be impressive, but I've been having a lot of fun for the last few years!

 

What kind of kayak? I have a Hobie and loads of fishing gear also, although I wanna be a one rod angler like Yamamoto.

 

As I get older I find this to be so true. I go out of my way to not buy new things but go for experiences. Owning more is almost suffocating to me.

 

Just a cheapie. I started with a Future Beach "Discovery", which sounds like a bad premonition if you read it a certain way. Then, I bought an Ascend H10 from Bass Pro in Florida a few years ago, and have been toting it back and forth with me when I go to visit.

I'm about ready to buy a second one to leave down there, as I highly recommend against driving cross country with a kayak on your roof. At least, not if you're in a hurry!

Sadly, it's gotten used more in my last few trips to Florida than it has in Wisconsin the last few years. The one day I tracked myself in Pine Island sound, I logged a little over 10 nautical miles. It's been amazing exploring the shallow inshore areas and catching all kinds of fish in the process.

I've been thinking about moving down full time for a few years now.

As far as rods; I have way too many!

 

oh man I am so jealous, I fished once near keys but with a guide and it was incredible. It is a place I won’t mind spending all day fishing, very few things come close.
Yeah I know what you mean — way too scared to drive too much car topping kayak. I have good kayak carrier but it still makes me nervous.

 

I'm so lucky to have access to a place on a saltwater canal! I could seriously spend a month on the kayak down there! Aside from decent fishing, the scenery is beautiful!

I drove from Lee county down to the keys a few years ago and can seriously say it was just about the best 2 days of my life. I can't wait to get down there again! Next time I want to take the kayak.

Lets see how EVs give you range if they had to drag 250 lbs of skid plates and a bunch of other crap. Hydrogen is the future, our trucks will be hydrogen guzzlers, that's all.

 

Long Range America will make an auxiliary hydrogen tank, that will go into the spare tire space, and life will be good.

 

Yes! I was surprised how laid back it felt. I had planned on going to Key West and the "southernmost" point (but, I have been to the Drunkenmost point, and that was fun!), but decided to focus on fishing and relaxing instead. I still feel good about that choice. I caught fish, ate well, and talked to random people at the local bar. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The hotel was certainly not fancy, but clean and quiet. Fuck. I can't wait to go again.

 

According to some smart people at DOE, EV's lose about 2% of fuel economy for every 100 pounds of extra weight they carry.

They tested F-150 Lightning pickup truck and it lost 24.5% of range when loaded with 1,400 pounds of sandbags.

 

This is why I don't carry 1,400 pounds of sandbags. I stick to 1,400 pounds of feathers, because everyone knows that feathers are lighter than sandbags.

 

IMHO the top-end, early adopter EV market is probably tapped out for now but everyone was (and is) aiming and building for it - but we'll see how the Cybertruck does (which the entry point is now ~50% higher than announced), so it's going to be tough selling in volume now that prices (or at least MSRP) + interest rates are where they are.

And so dealers bellyache about EV's not selling for the prices they demand. It wasn't long ago that the Bolt was slated to be discontinued and the Blazer EV that was announced as starting at $45k is now $56k and that's before dealers perform their shenanigans. Who knows what the Equinox EV comes in at. (and of course ignoring the CarPlay/Android Auto removal by GM)

I bet the switch to Tesla/NACS plugs from CCS will dampen demand too but I'm not sure how high-profile that is for the typical buyer.

And this is before we get to the can of worms of public charging speed, reliability/down-time, etiquette, etc. If I tossed my off-road aspirations out the window I'd love to try out an EV or PHEV, but I'm not ready to give up a spare tire so I appreciate the RAV4 Prime and Sorento PHEV still keeping space for a spare tire.

 

Saw this just the other day and thought it interesting. Doesn't really shed light on the EV aspect though.

 

The clowns that are drooling over these things and reviewing them, don't really know what a truck is, and why trucks behave the way they behave, why they are uncomfortable when you hit a bump, why despite a century of experience, enginers are not able to get rid of those problems that trucks have This electric Honda Ridgeline is not a truck, so obviously it doesn't have the unpleasant characteristics of a truck.
Nobody will cross shop between this toy and a Ram 2500, nobody! Techies with money and no clue about trucks will buy these.

More pulling power to impress your friends in the Walmart lot, or more pulling power to transport a ton of crap over 2000 miles deep into Alaska in winter? Get out of the world of dreams, get back to reality.

Like the average pickup truck owner actually uses their pickup for anything close to that.

If people with pickups were required to actually use them for anything a minivan couldn’t do better, 80% of them would be off the road tomorrow.

 

I am not one of those. I don't daily drive my Ram. Haven't driven it in over 3 months. I drive it when it is really needed.

 

Around here, people use brodozers to go to Starbucks to buy coffee colored slurpees.
