    I caught this one reading the manual last night. The 5 vs. 7 don't make sense at all. They must be switched.

    Yeah, I have the same info for mine. This seems like a small cargo capacity, especially when you're in a 5 to 7 passenger vehicle.

    They are not switched the 7 passenger gets more capacity due to more passenger weight. But if you truly want your payload rating go by the gross vehicle weight rating on the door sticker and then weigh it at a weigh station. Subtract the curb weigh from the gvwr and you get the actual payload. If you operate in that range imo it’s operating in the safe limits.

    I thought it would be simple to calculate based on the 2 stickers on the door. Based on that (as the post #28) my Limited with 7 seats can carry 1151lbs.
    But after lift and tires now its 5060lbs.

    By "capacity", do you mean that the 7-passenger version has differences in the suspension or frame that allow it to handle more passenger/cargo weight than the 5-passenger version? That's plausible. I can't see any other way the "occupants + luggage" weight allowance would be higher for the former, because I don't think they made the rest of the vehicle 300 pounds lighter.

    I can see this, but am curious too, but just 7 average-sized 150lb people will be 1050 lbs which gives you hardly anything for your gear. Even 5*150lbs is 750 and that is barely enough for add ons such as your rack, winch, bumpers, rocks sliders, cargo, etc...

    Yeah, whatever the right answer is, there's not much to capacity to spare if you pack in that many people.

    Even if you pack 4 guys at 200 each, that's 800 lbs which is dreadfully low for a weekend adventure with all their gear. This doesn't make sense to me.

    The ridiculous thing that nobody can explain about payload is that Toyota lists the curb weight at 4750lb and GVWR at 6300lb. EVERY other manufacturer lists payload as GVWR-Curb weight (wet) so every other manufacturer out there would list payload as 1550lb...but for a Toyota, it's 880lb.

    When you Google 4runner payload it says...1495-1700lbs. I'm not sure if its right or not.

    I remember test driving a 2021 Venture and saw the door sticker was 1156lbs and test drove a TRD Off-Road that was 880lb. My current 21’ TRD Off-Road Premium is also 880lbs. Never made sense to me.

    Something is off here and it doesn't make sense.

    Yeah, but you can store things with the 50/50 seat, like I put my fridge/freezer on one side. Then I have my Yakima EXO system that weighs the back down with all my gear.

    I like bananas too.

    This is the real question we are all wondering. Bananas or what have you... Weight is weight. What is the real answer? Or what is posted in the door jamb is just the real answer because that weight limit is weak. I feeld we're getting cheated here.

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    Toyota’s listed curb weight of 4750 are ….a fairytale.
    I haven’t heard of anyone getting under 5,000 after being weighed.

    Too bad I did not test when mine was 100% stock. :(:(:(:(

    However my Limited could be closer to stock since I removed XREAS with all those piping and replaced with Ironman FCP. Removed I guess little heavy 20in wheels (or are they same weight as 17in TRD ORP wheels? not sure) to 17in TRD ORP wheels. But have slightly heavier Falken Wildpeak AT3W 285/70R17SL. I have no sliders, skids, nothing. My Limited came to 5060lbs with nothing inside not even myself inside (empty) but with full tank of gas.
    As said before its original load carry capacity is 1165lbs and has a carry capacity reduction sticker for 14lbs.

    I've read through this thread and the notion that the payload capacity is somehow affected by the drive shaft(s) strength when in 4x4 and rear diff locked is interesting, but very odd as by definition that has nothing to do with GVWR in general. I've copy/pasted some research below but thought I would leave some real world numbers if anyone finds it useful since I weighed my before any modifications.

    2023 ORP, Lunar Rock, Stock Wheels and tires, no modifications, Sunroof included, no other options like subwoofer, side steps, etc.

    CAT Scale Weight : 4675lbs
    (full tank of gas and about 500miles on the rig)
    Now, the original weight at the scale was 4900 but this included some odds and ends we had in the back, as well as myself in the drivers seat. I got home and weight all of the extra items in the car using a bathroom scale (blankets for the dogs, small soft cooler, etc and it was 225lbs of extra stuff, 4900 - 225 = 4675)

    My plan is to not overbuild my 4Runner, and attempt to be weight conscious where possible using aluminum over steel where I feel I can. And even if you stay below the GVWR, it doesn't mean the ride will be great or the sag in the rear will be manageable so I plan to get all my mods and rear storage sorted out before deciding on new rear springs and/or air bags. And that will be balanced against likely a modest 1.5 to 2.0" lift in the front, I'm overly cautious when it comes to CV angles.

    Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, DOT defines GVWR as:
    Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single motor vehicle.

    NHTSA is similar: "Gross vehicle weight rating" or "GVWR" means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle.
    They go on to say:
    "Gross axle weight rating" or "GAWR" means the value specified by the manufacturer as the load-carrying capacity of a single axle system, as measured at the tire-ground interfaces.

    So by that, you would have 6300-4675 (1625) available for passengers (and driver), accessories and gear.

    My next question....who has broken an axle shaft on a 5th gen 4Runner?

    See post #53, It's a data point of one, but I was under 4750. Various searching around the internet shows a CAT scale to be +/-20 to +/-50 lbs accurate under 10,000lb which seems a lot more accurate than I thought.

    The total payload shows 880 lbs for me, and I already have about 260 lbs of extra weight in armor etc. No worries though, I'll be getting appropriate springs in the next year.

    My front springs are saying heeeelp!

    mine is the same payload. But no armour. I think if you weigh it empty with a full tank and then subtract that from the GVWR like the person above did then it gives you the real payload. I think Toyota puts those numbers on the door to be conservative.

    So I was thinking about this on my drive home last night. Someone mentioned the axle shafts being a limiting factor if you have a locker....so 1. why only 1165 with no locker and 2. what about towing? I know plenty of situations where being locked would help when moving a trailer (which isn't really towing but still can stress systems). I mean, just pulling an extra 5,000lb even unlocked is gonna put more stress on things than simply loading the vehicle to GVWR.

    Which led me to wonder if it's a limitation caused in 4-lo due to gearing multiplying torque and maybe they don't expect you to tow while in 4-lo so towing is not an issue (or maybe they just don't expect you to tow while locked?).

    Either way, the numbers just don't add up. For the guy who says good luck finding a 4runner under 5,000lb, ok, even if most come in at 5100lb, that would still leave 1200...and the 4750 I used is Toyota's number, not mine. Maybe that's for a stripped down SR5 but they list that for all 4wd models (2wd is listed at 4400 with a GVWR of 6100).

    Does anyone know anyone who has broken an axle shaft on a 4runner?
