I hate to admit but I really didnt look it over and beating myself up over it. I barley made it before closing and glanced at the rear while getting in thinking" its probably just the light". Stopped to eat and went to the rear to discover its not the light. I would have went right back if it wasn't closed. I'll find out tomorrow what happens and at least give an update.

To be fair, I've seen really good high end shops not get it right with bumper resprays the first time. It's different material than metal and matching can be a nightmare, as it can look perfect in most light in the booth but off in a certain shade. Even for undamaged OEM paint jobs, you can often see a difference between the painted metal and plastic parts in certain light.

Granted this example is pretty bad and should have never been overlooked because it's obvious in all lighting lol. But the difference between a good shop and some mickey mouse insurance conveyor belt place is the good shop won't gaslight you and will just redo it with a better custom mix.

That's why, whether a corolla or a lambo, I would always pick a high end shop that does body work for like a local Porsche dealer and take it to them. Standards are higher, as they usually have better materials to work with versus the local McBodyshop places. Having to redo a 911 quarter panel paint job because it was off the first time is an expensive mistake you don't make often as a shop. Those customers are also way pickier than your typical NPC car owner.

    Mulligan...

I've been through something similar with a previous vehicle. Raise hell if you need to. I wouldn't accept that work.

Looks like they didn't use the pearl white they were supposed to use. They also didn't even attempt to blend the quarter :annoyed:

Terrible match. Dealership body shop did a similar thing to my wife's old vehicle. Insurance sent us to another shop whom had no problem matching it correctly.

Wow sorry yeah way off in color. Can you junk yard replace this piece with another pearl white? May be closer if they can't match the paint perfect.

Wow. Thanks for all the help. Will definitely forward this. Insurance said I had to let them try again. It is a small-ish shop. From my understanding when I dropped it back off today they only have 1 painter. I saw a 4+ rating with no wait and thought that sounded good, but maybe the opposite. The ratings may be from the Tow/haul side of their business. The owner did look at it and said it needed more red(whatever that means). At least he did acknowledge it. Hopefully they get it right this time but I have doubts.

They even have a specific part for Pearl, see last page.

When applying the Toyota Pearl color:
    1. Maintain the uniformity of the Pearl particles in the spray gun, by gently agitating if left unstirred for long periods.
    2. Use the same application distance & inlet air pressure (set-up) for creating the panel as you will use for the actual repair.
    3. Apply medium layers of Pearl basecoat. Avoid over wetting or dry dusty spray.
    4. Due to possible application fluctuations, never use a let-down panel created by someone else. Always create your own let-down panel.

More red? Is the owner color-blind? I feel for you bro. Apparently this shop color match by sight. Don't be surprised when you pickup the rig that its a red bumper!! LMAO!!

This is true but shit always happens a bit faster from the approved shops.

State Farm just gives you a list and you pick.

And thats clearly the wrong paint code. Someone entered the trim wrong I bet.

It's sad. I am dreading the call to pick it up again. I've only got to put 100 miles on it the month I've owned it. I love my tacoma but the 4runner is a level up and I am so ready to enjoy it.

This is pretty standard practice from the insurance company. The body shop will get it right or the insurance company will not pay them after the 3rd try. FYI… the base coat for Blizzard Pearl is super white 040 followed by the 3 stage Pearl process. They got the base coat correct but didn’t finish the Pearl process. Spraying a single base/pearl combo or base plus pear/clear is easy. The 3 stage is really difficult, even for the most experienced painters.

15 years body shop/insurance experience here. For sure pearls are hard to match. Especially white pearl. They need to get closer in this situation though. The color match isn't even close.

The fact that they tried to deliver this truck, with that terrible match, is alarming. The painter probably isn't that good. The manager/Estimator is a joke and knew this was bad. Or there was zero QC done. Either way that's embarrassing for the shop and they should be blasted publicly for trying to deliver this car.

I picture the paint guy and the body work guy, standing there with beers in hand, staring at the bumper after they moved it from the paint booth.

    "Well, maybe they won't notice."

Demand a new shop paint this. There is probably zero chance the original shop will get it right this time. Search around your area for a good shop-heck a Toyota dealer is better than these guys. This kind of repair has depreciated the value of your vehicle significantly and it will remain so until it's painted correctly.

A good painter will spray out many test cards or let down panels until he gets the color tinted close enough to match. Most insurance companies will not pay for this procedure up front, and certainly will not pay to blend into adjacent panels on a bumper cover job.

We're beating a dead horse. It's obvious this is unacceptable, but until the OP updates the progress, or lack thereof, nothing else needs saying.

Update. This is a nightmare. The second time I picked up the 4runner color match was almost acceptable but there were paint chips and cracks in the new paint in places. So...I talked to the owner and was assured the third time would be perfect. He was aware of the 3 stage process. I went to pick it up today and the color match was worse than the first time so never got around to even looking for small imperfections. Insurance just keeps telling me to carry it back. I ask how many times before I could find a new shop but they were closed. I don't know if I'll ever get this resolved or have any options after 4 tries. This has to be also costing the collision center as well. What gives? I'm about ready to call them out by name. Sorry to vent, but well deserved.

At a certain point the shop has to give up and say we can’t do it. That’s pretty bad - the 3rd time will most likely not be much better.

Sorry you have to deal with that headache.

Tell the insurance company this is total BS and that you are taking it to the best shop you can find (at any cost) and will then sue them if they don't pay. You are getting seriously jerked around.

What you now have is a bumper cover with way too much paint on it. Due to the excessive thickness, it's starting to fracture and peel off. Time for a new bumper cover and new paint shop.

That’s one poorly prepped bumper. New shop. Even if it looks fine the next time they do it, the integrity of the paint won’t be fine. They need to sand this down, and properly prep it or you’ll just have so many layers of paint - that’s why it’s peeling.
