It's apparent why new Toyota products are the way they are now, 4Runners targeting Subaru/Kia buyers who don't really off-road but need three rows seats for their dogs.

let’s say they sell 100,000 cars and save $20 each. That’s $2million in their pocket.

We didnt ask you to read the thread
If it took you 12 minutes to get thru this dumpster fire and you didnt at some point hit the back button and go find something else to do, its not our fault... You did it to yourself. Sometimes you just gotta know when to quit.

All done so they can say "starting price only increased __ dollars" when the lower trims lost some previously expected features including spare tires. Probably saved a few hundred dollars not installing a power driver seat and some of the under body shielding that all SR5s used to come with.

Frankly 12 minutes was a long time to go through 3.5 pages of people bantering.

And at $50k a pop, all it takes is 40 buyers saying "no thanks asshole" for that $2M in sales to disappear. Assuming a very generous 25% profit margin on each vehicle, if they turn off 160 buyers then they shot themselves in the foot. Penny wise and pound foolish.

    Math is fun!

The math gets murky if Toyota found out via marketing research that the typical buyers don't even know how to lower the spare and would just call road side assistance anyway.

Someone still needs a tire to put on and you still have to drive it after.

But I agree, there are many variables that could be added to that basic equation.

But what if they paid $2M for that market research?

Meanwhile if they just added the $20 or $50 to the MSRP no one would even notice or care on a $50K vehicle and no one would be complaining about them cheaping out on spare tires making bad publicity.

2 million is pocket change to giant company like Toyota anyways.

For those who care about a full-size spare, Toyota is probably betting they would either move to higher trims for thousands more or just buy their own and add it. But the usual buyer probably won’t even think about it.

When Hyundai/Kia skimped on an engine immobilizer, I normally consider myself not a complete automotive dunce and I didn’t even notice or think to look for it on the spec sheet until it blew up in customer faces.

Same with bump stops and everything else that was standard but not anymore. I wouldn’t have even thought about frame bump stops until people noticed and posted about it.

this is likely correct, and prudent.

it’s gotta be worth more $ all in to toyota to outfit 4R’s with full-size spares, than $20

I wish that Toyota would have kept the fully flat folding rear seats on this new gen.

What is the new skid plate material? Is it that felt like material that is used for splash guards in the fender wells?

I was about to come in saying that the three-row was our best bet at that like the 5th gen (not including the tray option) but turns out nope.

    Seats don’t slide anymore either.

6th gen is not for me. If you gotta spend that much you should just be looking at the GX. Much nicer looking vehicle and does not have any hybrid nonsense. Yet.
