Last car I had any ECU/TCU tuning on was a VW GTI. With that car, tunes usually came with a OBD dongle that allowed you to switch between various modes like stock, tuned, and valet mode. I liked having the ability to flip it to stock mappings before bringing my car to the dealer, or valet mode which had a "detuned" mapping when I needed to hand the car over to a valet.

Do any of the Toyota tunes have that ability to just plug in a dongle and switch between mappings?

 

You can buy the hardware and apply the tune yourself, and flash back to stock. But it is not a self contained handheld device like some other options you are describing. For a 2022, there is only one software able to access your vehicle and tune it, VF Tuner. You can buy the hardware and load the software to your PC, then buy tune files from Overland Tailor and apply the tune yourself. It’s more expensive but gives you flexibility if that’s important.

it’s not something you’d want to do before you hand off the car at the valet though. Busting out a laptop and then powering it up, loading software, flashing the tune, 10 min later you’re off to dinner…

I had this tune loaded a few weeks ago ... Very pleased with it. All but eliminated gear hunting in my 21 Pro. One observation, under uncommon circumstances, and when using cruise control, the torque converter locked and unlocked repeatedly, seemingly doing that instead of gear hunting. Doesn't happen often, only when using CC, and much less annoying than shifting between 4th and 5th repeatedly.

I went with a mild throttle map which seems only slightly more sensitive than stock, but in my opinion it's perfectly suited to the truck.

 

Do you recall the speed and load conditions (going up a small hill, head wind, etc…) where the TC Lock/unlock was occurring in CC? I run CC a lot on my 2021 ORP and haven’t experienced this, but when I use CC out here it’s usually set between 75-85 mph. I’d like to test it and see if I can recreate your behavior to see if we can dial that out. I noticed even stock that Toyota tends to use the TC lock/unlock as another gear in some circumstances.

I also run the mild throttle and like it. It’s still smooth, more linear, and a nice bump from stock.

 

Yeah, the few times it's occurred, it's been on mildly-sloped terrain, with cruise control set on about 60mph. When it happened, it just started cycling between locked/unlocked repeatedly for about 15 or 20 seconds. It's only happened a couple of times, under pretty specific circumstances, so it's not been a big deal.

 

Thanks for the info. I’ll see if I can recreate the behavior on mine to see if there is a way to change it. Could be the a TC lock setting is exactly 60 mph, so may change it to 61 or 62 as people tend to set CC to whole numbers. If you can test it again at CC set to 61 or something would be interesting to see if it doesn’t happen.

 

Sure, I can give it a shot next time I am out. The road where it's happened is on the way to my house from town, so I travel it often. I'll post back here with the results.

 

Interesting, good to know. Just curious, is that just a case of the ECUs that Toyota uses not having a spot in memory to hold multiple map configurations to toggle between (I believe that was how the VW tunes worked)?

 

We are limited by what the software enables us to do at this time. For a brief period VF Tuner was developing a handheld device but abandoned it for various reasons.

The 3rd Gen Tacomas and 2nd Gen Tundras have ECT/Tow mode buttons that we can enable some map switching there with current tunes. Unfortunately there isn’t anything like that on the 4Runner currently.

 

A handheld tuner and being able to tune the transmission in my 2019 would be 2 great options.

 

I tried this again yesterday, and at 62 mph on the same gentle hill, the torque converter lock hunting still occurred. I'll try again at perhaps 55 mph and see if that makes any difference.

 

Is this only with cruise control engaged?

 

I have only noticed it with CC engaged - manually, I am probably at least subconsciously controlling the throttle slightly differently, I suspect. I'll see if I can compile a video of the slope from my dash cam, as well as a phone video of the hunting from my phone. It may take a couple of days to put it together.

 

Ok, I have not been able to replicate the issue on my 4Runner, but we also don’t have many areas where 60 mph CC would be used, it seems everything out here is 35 mph city or 70+mph highway. I can try setting CC to 60-62 on some hills here but I might get rear ended or run off the road

 

When did Toyota change transmission controls to where you can tune it on the 4tunner

 

On the 5th Gen, 2020+ all have TCU (transmission) access and tuning. There are a few oddball ECU’s between 2010-2019 that also have TCU access, but the vast majority of those years do not.

It seems 4th Gens that can be tuned (2005-2009) also have TCU access. Pre-2005 is a different ECU, K-line, and access just coming online for that.

VF Tuner has stated they have recently gained access to all 2010-2019 TCU’s but doesn’t currently have a means of writing to them via the OBD2 port, but is working it. So there is hope.

When you order it, make sure you let VF know it’s for a 2020+ T4R, it takes 10 credits to unlock your ECU vs. the standard 4 credits for most all other vehicles.

Once you get that, you can email Overland Tailor (info@overlandtailor.com) and purchase a tune pack. From there you have everything you need to DIY. The OTT tune pack will be locked files, so you will not be able to edit the tunes. This is typical in the industry. If you want to build your own tunes you can start from the stock file or buy VF tune packs that are editable. The VF tune packs are pretty mild compared to the 3rd party options, like OTT, in my testing.

Bumping this thread as folks have been asking in “other” tune threads for dyno validated tunes. Check post 2 in this thread. I’ve got over 10,000 miles on this tune and it’s only getting better. New options are available for different shift scheduling based on customers builds and preferences for all years/models with TCU access.

I love my OTT tune on my 2022 OR with 35’s and 4.88’s. RC in Melbourne was able to get the shift points perfect with my gearing. I’m a believer in OTT.
