If the timing works out I would definitely be up for that trip. I love those V8 4Runners! Sounds like a good rig.

Thanx for the pics. I took that road in 1976 with half-ton 4WD Chev. short bed. Wow!!!

Definitely recommend getting out there. So many good trails and so many good views. Cannot wait to get out there again this summer. Going to run Alpine Loop this year though.

For Imogene I would go Ouray to Telluride. It seems more challenging that way. Black Bear there is only one way to run the trail so no choice there. Alpine is best IMHO going from Ouray around. Ophir is best from Ouray as well.

90% of Black Bear is like 2, basically a fire road. The last 10% is probably a 7-ish. We did it with a completely stock Tacoma Off-Road. A good spotter is highly highly recommended.
    Ophir is 3-4.
    Imogene was 4-5.
Alpine Loop 4-5, there is one section that is a lot of rocks, so it was slow going. We hit skids a couple times in the stock Tacoma, but it was nothing crazy. The rest of Alpine Loop is like fire roads.

I would not hesitate to do run it in my 5th Gen 4Runner with no lift and 255/80's.

Nice write up and good pics. Besides the starter on the '96 why did it not run correctly?

Honestly not sure. I think it may have been the TPS, I had issues with it before where it would totally cut off throttle input. I ended up getting the 5th gen and sold the 3rd gen.

That '96 looked pretty hot. I will bet you miss it. I have a '67 FJ40 that sort of sits around since I got the new 4Runner.

You can do Yankee Boy basin on the same road out of Ouray, then back down a bit and take the turn off and do Imogene. It's enjoyable either way, from Telluride or Ouray. We've done Black Bear first, then Imogene Pass to Ouray, a bit of a long trip but definitely doable in a day.

I definitely miss it, wish I kept it. Poor FJ4o, those are badass rides.
