The earlier motors in my trucks all had carburetors, so if I remember correctly, they pulled vacuum from one of the intake runners. I've never seen the inside of an EFI plenum, so I'm not sure why only 1 (thankfully) exhaust valve got burnt. Does Utah have motor swap rules? California is pretty strict on that, but I have seen a few swaps with the GM 4.3L Vortec. I so wanted to put a small block Chevy in my Land Cruiser, but life always took the $$$ for something else.

I would love to to put the vortech in, but as well, life demands my income. Utah doesnt have motor swap rules, you can put a diesel in a civic but it does have to be able to pass an emissions test.

I started taking out the other valves.
There's a pic of the bottom of the head and then pics of the first valve and it's seat I pulled that were non problematic. Are the seats Ok? What should I be looking for on the ways of gonna have to lap them all?

In the last 2 pics, is that the #4 combustion chamber and ex. valve, Or is that the burnt valve from #3? Anyhow, in the pic of the valve, it looks like good contact most of the way around it. Except towards the right side of it, it gets a little fuzzy.
In the third pic from the bottom #3 com. cham. The clean and shiny part of the seat is what a good seat should look like.
Once you remove an intake valve, you will have a clearer picture of what I mean.

    Steve

And as far as lapping all of them, 3 or 4 minutes on each isn't a bad idea.
Actually 1 to 2 minutes is probably all you need.
I just rubbed my hands together to get a grip on things. lol no pics.

No, that is not the burnt valve, but it is an exhaust valve. Thank you so much, your my Chilton if you will, but better. I was a little nervous to do this, but money is tight and I have the mechanical skill I've just never gone in this deep on my runner. Again thank you, your help and knowledge is very much appreciated.

Thank you Sir. And it's very apparent that you do have the skills to get this done. I'm sure that we both know people that "wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole"
I enjoy taking apart broken stuff, and getting it working again. I had my Land Cruiser for 34+ years and won't claim to have turned every nut & bolt, but a lot of things from the windshield wiper motor to reseating a tire bead was a lot of "first time I ever done that" kinda thing.

Dang... 34 yrs that's awesome! I really would like to get my 4runner tip top looking good by the time my son turns 16 so I can give him the keys for his first high school dance. Kinda cheesy but it's something I would really like to do.

You were very correct. Once I got the intake valve out I noticed the surface as it should be

If you have or have access to a bench grinder with a wire wheel, you could lightly brush away those carbon deposits for a little better flow. You know, the seat-of-the-pants horsepower gain.
Even a Moto-tool would work well in the runners.

That could work, but it could be hard to hold on to the valves. If you have a vise with those plastic jaw covers, that would work. Or an old leather glove, shoe sole, something along those lines. In my shop tool box I've have a couple of the cup style wire brushes for drills that I've used on my TLC.

That area and maybe about another 1/2" to 3/4" above that.

Ok great! I was wondering about that but I'm not familiar with that type o stuff so I didn't wanna touch it. Will I have to lap after that?

Yes most definitely. It only takes a minute or two for each one. And in the lap kit, it should come with the compound too.

Lightly is ok, but a piece of fine grit emery cloth might by better. The aluminum is soft compared to the steel seat.

Ok, would it be ok if I didn't do the head? My first time messing with this stuff and not having the means to mess it up making me nervous :/ also is there a special or easier way to get the oil seal out of the timing cover?

It's ok if you don't, it doesn't look too crusty anyhow. Um, try a couple blocks of wood and position the pulley cover face side down, and use a hammer & drift punch or an old screwdriver to tap it out from the back. Just make sure not to rest the timing marks on the wood, because you don't wanna break that off. I hope that you got this post soon enough in time.

    Steve

Those lap pics look really good, you got it man!

I know your off with the fam, but if you could tell me your input when you get back i would be very grateful.
I've asked many forums and what not what spark plug is best for the 22re. NGK is the most said, but i was wondering about the platinum, Iridium, v-power, etc. I havnt a clue what the difference is and which one is best for my motor. Thanks.

I can't offer much either. Long ago I used "discount auto parts", tune-up kits. The kind that read "will work with most Toyotas". But soon found out that they were not that good in the long run. Back in the early '80's, one of my Dad's friends had a brother that was a Parts Manager at a local Toyota dealer, so I started buying parts there. They sold NGK's, so that's what I used. Just standard plugs, no fancy names like now-a-days.

    Steve

And how did it go with the rest of the valve lapping and the seal removal on the crank pulley?

Ya that's exactly how I feel with all these names and what not. The seal came out perfect on top a couple blocks of wood.
Taking out the rest of the valves to replace the stem seals I discovered another burnt valve, not as bad as the first one I found but I decided I'd better just replace all the exhaust valves. I just got them last night and now that I've already lapped the intake valves, I'm very excited to do these and start putting it all back together.

Have a question. If I lapped the all intake valves, but then washed up the head in solvent tank, should I re-lap them?

No, but make sure that you keep the valves in their respective bores that they were lapped in.

I just lapped this exhaust valve, the seat is a lil crusty. Should I lap again or do I leave it?

10 4 I had a piece of cardboard I made a mock head that I put the valves on when I took them out.
