Even better, you can add OE parts and get more functionality (auto dash . . . new thread?:p)

At least a faulty switch can be easily replaced. What does John Q. 4RunnerOwner do when a component in the computer controlled auto headlight controller goes south? I suppose you join the rest of those forced to turn their lights on manually...

I've never had an electronic failure like that - it's almost always mechanical parts of the switches (contacts, springs, catches), and they tend to fail when parts have become hard to get. Several of those I mentioned required steering column disassembly and junkyard parts. Fortunately parts are available much longer now that vehicle lifespans are longer.

Agreed. I'm neither for nor against auto headlights. Mine doesn't have them, and I'm not missing them. I can see the value of them, but don't fall into the camp that they should be mandated across the model line.

I don't think op is coming back to this thread. And that's what's wrong with America these days.

I had to come back to this after trying it for a while. The problem for me is that leaving the lights on puts the head unit in permanent night mode. Hopefully swapping the dummy light sensor for a real one would fix that.

I didn't read the comment but assume it's similar to one I read a while back and practice. I keep them on 24/7 and just hit the lock button twice to turn them off.

I would just turn them on when needed but I'm right handed and lazy

I had auto headlights on my '04 JGC and thought I was hot shit. When I lived in the country I thought it was stupid because as others have stated, I grew up turning them on and it's obvious when they aren't on. However, when I moved close-ish to DC where a lot of the highways and interstates are lit, you'd be surprised how many ding dongs drive out of a shopping center or gas station at night and don't turn them on because it's hard to tell they aren't on. Because I didn't have to guess or think about it (plenty of traffic to occupy the driving mind) I really began to appreciate them

Naw actually my point was contrary to Lou, I don't keep 'em on I use my left hand to turn lights on like simpletons from the early 20th century

There we go, this is why I didn't make the joke I wanted to make earlier! Left hand is for headlights so not sure why edited but...

My right hand is usually occupied while driving so I can't operate the light stalk. High-oh!

My 2023 Limited is the first vehicle I've ever owned with auto lights and DRLs. At first I didn't like them. Kept manually turning the headlights off. Couldn't stop doing it - after almost 43 years of driving with normal headlights it was just muscle memory to turn them off. Used to do it when I occasionally drove my wife's CR-V. She'd yell at me for turning the headlights off - couldn't help it. I'm used to them now and don't turn them off anymore. They're fine. Would've bought the 4Runner without them and not thought twice about it - but they work OK - and I'm used to them now. I still have the auto high beams turned off though. When I first got the 4Runner everyone kept flashing their brights at me - figured the auto high beams weren't turing off quickly enough - but I still get brights flashed at me when just driving with low beams - so probably try turning them back on.

I think growing up driving a manual is why I'm so used to driving with the one left hand on top of the steering wheel - I still find myself doing it.

I remember when headlights were a pull knob from the dash rather than being on the stalk too. Not necessarily because I'm that old but just driving older cars.

It's not a necessary feature but one of the more convenient of the tech features that at least doesn't have the feel of the car trying to drive you

Kinda wish we still had the floor push button on the left of the brake pedal to activate high beams. That was sweet...

Dash buttons rocked in regards to shut down procedure. Find myself leaving headlights on ( while on the stalk) several times a week.

I've driven those too - also a cool feature if you don't have a clutch.

I remember auto high beams from the 80's - they'd flicker like a strobe light every time you passed a reflective road sign. Tech has come a long way. The auto high beams in the JGC even "see" tail lights and will dim

Yeah, I like the floor button for high beams. As far as push-buttons go, The first car I drove was a '64 Dodge Polara, which had push-button gear select. I can't remember if the pull-out light switch on that was on the left or right, but I suspect it was the left.

I've always steered mostly with my left hand, mainly because I'm left-handed, although I'm nearly ambidextrous. When driving in the UK, it's harder for me to adjust to shifting left-handed and steering right-handed than to adjust to driving on the left. (Harder because of the steering than the shifting).

Yep - my daily drivers from 1989-2010 were 5 speed manuals. I usually drive with my left hand on the wheel too. I remember the pull knob headlight switch and the high beam button on the floor to the left of the brake pedal - because I am that old!

The only thing I am ambidextrous with is archery (I have no idea how this sort of thing even works). Attempted to drive a right hand manual during my tech years and it was like I had 3 left feet. Cannot hardly open a jar off hand. I recall my Oldsmobile Cutlass light switch, at times, would pull all of the way out, Knob, stem and all) and you would have to slowly slider it back in to get the lights on.

Guess I am use to my 2018 Tundra. Can have led headlight surround with fog lights on when parking lights are on. 2023 4runner only the parking lights go on without the fog lights. Helps when pulling up to sentry gates.

Right hand manual as in right hand drive? I've never done that but think I'd feel like a fish out of water.

I remember wondering if the pedals were reversed too until I saw on an episode of OG Top Gear (UK) that it looked like they were normal.

Yeppers, This was on a right hand drive manual Nissan... will leave the model up to speculation to retain my man card, Was like... the oddest experience of my short life up to that point. It was do able but very clunky based off of years of left hand drive. I guess over time one could grow more accustomed to it, Automagic would have been a non issue.

First car I drove - '68 Camaro, 327 w/ 2speed Powerglide, then a '70 Chevelle (not an SS:(), 350 w/ 3speed auto, then a '76 Olds Cutlass - all had high beam switch on the floor and pull knob headlight switch on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Did some stupid shit in those cars.

I know I'm driving this (and other threads) off-topic but heard the interesting reason why the British drive on the left. Has to do with the old days of dueling - most people are right handed and passed each other on the left so they could sabre rattle

Easy to ghost ride through intersections in rural areas! Pro tip, am not suggesting this is an actual thing.

No cop no stop. I was (poorly) taught by a cousin how to turn off the headlights and blow through a 4-way at night when you could see for a mile in all directions. Just gotta hope nobody else had the same idea

I'm not sure if it works this way with the standard screen, since mine is pretty much always on Android Auto; but I turn night mode on and off with the dial that controls the dash lights.

I drive with my parking lights on and a dark dash. I can still see the big red needles with my sunglasses on during the glare of afternoon pickup. I've been turning the stalk to DRL if I need to see reverse camera.

edit sometimes I do turn on my headlights too
